This plaque used to be situated in St Enochs Station in Glasgow. Once that closed it was relocated to Ayr Station, where it still stands.

Does anyone have images or a transcription of the names on this memorial?

I went there today to see the memorial and hopefully take some good photos of the names. Unfortunately I was refused access to the memorial. The memorial is now past a barrier and you have to have a ticket to go past (and round a corner so zoom lens was no good). The 'jobsworth' I spoke to conferred with a colleague and confirmed that I would not be permitted to take a photo unless I bought a ticket to travel (they don't do platform tickets anymore). Absolutely disgraceful - you can even get into the National War Memorial without paying an admission fee for Edinburgh Castle. You can't help but thinking that this is not what those who erected the memorial would have wanted.

I think we need to find out who is responsible for the station and make a complaint. They can't get away with this. Mad

I think I'll have a root about the internet to see what I can find.

First Scotrail are responsible for Ayr Station. You can find their entry on the station here.

http://www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/content/travelinfo/station-info.php?stationletter=A

First Scotrail have a Feedback page on their website

http://www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/content/contactus/index.php

Alternatively here are their contact details...

First ScotRail Customer Relations
First ScotRail,
PO BOX 7030,
Fort William,
PH33 6WX

Tel: 0845 601 5929
Email: scotrailcustomer.relations@firstgroup.com

I think I'll send them an e-mail rather than use the feedback.

E-mail now sent to First Scotrail. I'd encourage others to do the same.

I've also e-mailed the local RBL area secretary Mr J Porter ?

With encouragement from you guys, I wrote, rewrote and wrote again a considered, but not overlong, email to scotrail stressing my disappointment on behalf of those who gave their lives and those who wished them to be commemorated. I will let you know of any reply.

Mr Porter, the Ayrshire RBL secretary replied to my mail last night. He was disappointed to hear of this and has contacted the local Ayr RBL to look into it.

I haven't heard back from Scotrail yet.

Hopefully with the complaints from myself, John and Paul to Scotrail and the local RBL involved something will be done about it.

As John suggests the local papers should propbably be informed if Scotrail stand by their decision of insiting on the purchase of a train ticket before access is granted.

First Scotrail have now replied. You can now visit the memorial if you make prior arrangments.

Here is the Station master's reply

Dear Mr Brown,

Firstly may I apologise for the inconvenience suffered by your friend when he was refused entry to Ayr station to photograph the Glasgow & South Western Railway War Memorial.

In order to protect revenue and adhere to strict security measures we have procedures in place which not only protect ourselves but visitors to our station other than passengers I would like to take this opportunity to invite you / your friend(s) tophotograph the memorial at Ayr Should you wish to accept.

I would be obliged if you could drop us a quickline just to allow us to advise all concerned and make the necessary arrangements for you to be met at the station by one of our Station Team Managers and given a safety briefing relating to the station before taking your photographs.

I trust this meets with your approval and look forward to hearing from you

Willie Donaldson,
Station Team Manager
Ayr

I don't think that anyone could have expected any more from Willie. Notwithstanding the original 'jobsworth', I think that First ScotRail have done OK.

Look forward to the photos of the War Memorial.
