|
|
I wonder if it's OK to ask for help regarding one of two memorial brooches. I assume these were worn by the widows of men lost in World War I.
The one on the left bears the name Somme. The other Arras.
The Somme brooch takes the form of an anchor. Is there any special significance in this? In, what I accept is, my ignorance I wouldn't have thought many sailors were lost at the Somme.
Thanks in anticipation.
Mods; if this is in the wrong place, please relocate as suits. Thanks again.

I'll move this to the Queries section.
The 63rd (Royal Naval) Division formed from sailors and marines suffered heavy casualties at the Somme so that may explain the Somme scroll on the anchor

Looking again the one on the right may be shamrocks for an Irish unit?
No Irish division served at Arras but Irish regiments would have been present in other divisions
