This Church orginally worshipped in a buidling in Dalry Road. I believe it is now an Episcopal Church. Nobody in the current congregation knows if there was an original Great War memorial but I did however come across the following Great War Roll of Honour in their archives.

Many thanks for posting this. It is signed and dated at the bottom. Does it say Robert Hunter at the bottom? I'm also interested in the date because I see someone is listed as missing.

The Trumpeter at the bottom looks like a Napoleonic War Scots Grey and the flags of the Allied nations at the top are very reminiscent of the Commercial Bank of Scotland War Memorial. They used to sit in the George Street Head Office of the CBoS in Edinburgh but that is now 'The Dome' and the memorials are in the 36 St Andrew Square branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

The name at the bottom is indeed Robert Hunter and the date is 24th Jul 1917. If you look at the Abbeyhill Baptist thread you will see they also have a Robert Hunter ROH [dated Sept 1917]. It is identical at the top but the lower part of the ROH has another war image as opposed to the Scots Grey.

I assume that these Robert Hunter ROHs were massed produced with a blank interior that wuold allow the Church or organisation to fill in their own serving members?

You mention some men who are listed as missing on the memorial. I suspect it wasn't kept up to date. Of those listed as missing I have suggested the following men but am open to correction:

Bell, George: This may be a case of a POW returning after the ROH was made. There was a Gunner 125468, RFA who became a POW 21/03/1918. He was repatriated 30/02/1919. His service records exist and his address is given as 40 Moat Street which is identical to one of the addresses next to a Mr William and Mrs Mary Bell who were members of Gorgie BC.

Brown, W: may be Pte 8737, 1st KOSB, KIA 23/04/1917 and remembered on the Arras memorial.

Key, W: may be William Wilson Key, Pte 512661 [initially 6536], 1st/14th London Scottish, missing presummed KIA 02/04/1917. The Church records mention a William S Key and his wife living at 8 Wheatfield Street. They also had a son called Ernest who moved to London. There is no mention of another son called William I'm wondering if they had sons that moved to London based on the Church records.

Rodgers, Jim: may be John Carrick Rodgers, Pte 51135, RSF, KIA 24/03/1918, address was 15 Yeaman Place, Edinburgh.

These are only guesses on my part. If anyone can offer alternatives with a Gorgie connection then I'd like to hear from you.
