Keptie has posted information on three streets in Carluke named after the VC winners of that village.

Carluke also has a "Cameronian Drive".

Wishaw in Lanarkshire also has streets named after Lord Roberts and Kitchener. There are also streets in the Craigneuk area named after the Boer War Sieges of Ladysmith, Mafeking and Kimberley.

This has led me to think there's a possible mini project to document streetnames with a military link.

Can we use this thread to suggest them? I'm working on using Google Maps to build an interactive map showing the location of these streets, so if you list any here please give me as much information regarding location as possible.

Can we also keep this to streetnames we can definitely assign to a military connection? There will be streets that are probably named after local dignitaries and not a famous military person - let's try not to get too many of them.

Steinbeck Road in Buckie is named in connection the actions of Pte George Imlach McIntosh VC (24 April 1897 – 20 June 1968) of the 1st/6th Gordon Highlanders during WW1. The deed took place in the Steenbeek area during 3rd Ypres. The spelling used at Buckie is not the correct Flemish spelling. McIntosh was a native of Buckie and lived there all his life.

On 31 July 1917 at Ypres, Belgium, during the consolidation of a position, the company came under machine-gun fire at close range and Private Mclntosh immediately rushed forward under heavy fire and reaching the emplacement, threw a Mills grenade into it, killing two of the enemy and wounding a third. Subsequently entering the dug-out he found two light machine-guns which he carried back with him. His quick grasp of the situation and the rapidity with which he acted undoubtedly saved many of his comrades and enabled the consolidation to proceed unhindered by machine-gun fire

Glasgow has a Wellington Street and also a Crimea Street.

I want to limit this to street names, but if we open it up we could include the village of Waterloo.

There's a heap here in Arbroath as many streets of homes were built for the military base here.

Off the top of my head is "Hunter Road" named for the WW2 Commando awarded the V.C. (acting) Corporal Thomas Peck Hunter.
There's also a Camperdown Drive, more than likely named for the famous Dundonian Adam Duncan's sea victory.

I'm sure there's more but will have to get the map oot!

Stornoway has Seaforth Road, named after the Earls of Seaforth who owned Lewis and founded the Seaforth Highlanders. Loch Seaforth is of course the sea loch that lies on the boundary of Lewis and Harris.

Another Seaforth Highlanders street name in Stornoway is Assaye Place, after the Battle of Assaye (the Seaforths adopted the elephant badge after this I believe).

An old street name (now disused as it was a small court off Francis Street with housing hovels, and is now backshops for shops in the town centre) was Havelock Lane after Major General Sir Henry Havelock.

Stornoway also has Memorial Avenue - a street nearby the Lewis War Memorial.

From Mrs Aase Goldsmith
"I think we can add Largoward to that with "Durham Place", ref. Largo Durhams who owned much of the land hereabouts. We have a memorial to General James Durham in Upper Largo church."
