James Ross – age 34 – Private (2565) 1/14th Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish)
In 1891 James was at Cargilfield School in Leith and continued his education at Fettes College in Edinburgh. He played rugby with the London Scottish which he captained in 1901/2 and in 1904/5 and he was capped for Scotland five times between 1901&03. By 1908 he was a stockbroker living at Throgmorton Street, London. In 1911 he was living with widowed mother Emily Harriet Ross at Hazelwood, Warlingham, Surrey and they were at Starrock Court, Chipstead, Surrey when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in September 1914 and they were in action at Messines six weeks later where James was killed.
Born 1880 at Rutherford, Maxton. Son of the late Richard Ross (died 1908) of Rutherford, Maxton and Emily Harriet (Johnson) Ross.
Missing in Action on 1 November 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Cargilfield School memorial, the Fettes College memorial and on the Chipstead Village War Memorial.
Two of his brothers also fell
Richard (Dickon) Ross, Military Cross – age 22 – Second Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. Killed in Action on 25 September 1916.
Thomas Stewart Ross – age 18 – Second Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. Died of Wounds on 13 November 1918.

James Laidlaw Huggan – age 25 – Lieutenant, Royal Army Medical Corps attached to 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards.
James was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh from 1896 and at Darlington Grammar School in County Durham before becoming a Student of Medicine at Edinburgh University in 1905. He graduated M.B. & Ch.B. in 1911 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the RAMC in July 1912. He played rugby for the university, for London Scottish and once, in March 1914, for Scotland.
James landed at Le Havre with the 3rd Coldstream Guards on 13 August 1914 but was killed a month later during the battle of the Aisne. He was buried near Soupir but his grave was lost.
Born 1888 in Jedburgh. Son of the late Robert Huggan (died.1892) of Jedburgh and of Isabella Broomfield (Laidlaw) Huggan of Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 16 September 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France.
Also named on the George Watson's College memorial, on the Darlington Grammar School memorial, on the Old College memorial in Edinburgh University, on the University's Roll of the Fallen, and on the Scottish Rugby Union memorial at Murrayfield, Edinburgh.
