I guess this is the first woman listed on the Second World War panel.
No clues to what CNR or GNR stand for

BURNETT, ELIZABETH
Initials: E
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Civilian
Regiment/Service: Civilian War Dead
Age: 66
Date of Death: 11/02/1941
Additional information: Of 11 Surrey Lodge, Kennington, London. Injured 31 January 1941, at Kennington; died at Brookwood Emergency Hospital.
Casualty Type: Civilian War Dead
Reporting Authority: WOKING, URBAN DISTRICT

20th May 2013 - I have been contacted by someone who relates that Elizabeth Burnett identified by Adam Brown (post 2 ) is not the person named on the Newmachar memorial.

Elizabeth Jessie Strachan Burnett died, aged 27 years, as a result of influenza on 18th Nov 1943. She was an 'Auxiliary Hospital Nurse' at Rossie Priory Hospital, Inchture. Her usual residence was Lilybank, Newmachar.

Strangely Helen Farquhar is listed as REME. As far as I'm aware no women served in the REME during the Second World War. On CWGC she is ATS.

FARQUHAR, HELEN BARBARA COCKER
Initials: H B C
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Auxiliary Territorial Service
Date of Death: 15/12/1943
Service No: W/155393
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 23. Column 1.
Memorial: BROOKWOOD MEMORIAL

Being listed on Brookwood Memorial suggests she was lost at sea when a ship was sunk.

Suprisingly the first woman died near where the second one is commemorated.

Adam

It is CNR and stands for Civil Nursing Reserve.

Jim

Thanks, I'd not heard of the Civil Nursing Reserve. I was trying to find anything about air-raids on Kennington to see if that might have been a cause for her injuries on that date but haven't found anything.

Regards

Adam
