Named on the memorial is Private M2/079419 Henry COWE, Army Service Corps, Motor Transport, 1st Division.
Born 8th December 1893 Kedslie, Melrose. Parents William and Euphemia of Muirhouse, Stow.
Applied for police service, at this time he was living at Todrig, Greenlaw, Berwickshire, occupation gardener, single man, 5'10 in height.
Appointed to Northumberland County Constabulary 19th July 1913 as PC201, 3rd class constable.
19.7.1913 - 2.9.1913 HQ Morpeth (Training)
3.9.1913 Posted Whitley Bay
28.2.1914 He requested that he be allowed to resign, in a report he stated that Whitley Bay was too quiet for him, he told his sergeant that he was going to join the Metropolitan Police. The local superintendent asked Cowe's sergeant to try and talk him out of resigning and it appears to have worked as he was transferred to Ashington on 23.3.1914.
22.3.1915 Resigned to join HMF, enlisted at Coventry as a motor driver ASC and sent to Grove Park for training.
7.5.1915 Embarked Southampton on SS St Petersbourg
8.5.1915 Landed Rouen, France and on the 21st May posted to 319 MT Coy
11.6.1915 To Field Ambulance, no details recorded.
2.8.1915 Posted to Base MT Depot
25.9.1915 Posted 1st Division
Had three periods of leave in UK and granted 1st GC badge 27.4.1917
22.6.1918 To 22 CCS suffering from broncho pneumonia contracted on army service.
30.6.1918 Died at 3pm, he had been ill for 8 days and suffered pains in his back, legs and head. Buried Pernes British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Grave reference V D 9
His mother received a pension of 4/- from the army
His name is recorded on Northumberland County Constabulary and Stow war memorials.

Ran across this man who is on a memorial in the hills near Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire - but not on any local WM.

Named on the Lockerbie War Memorial as:

OLIVER, ISABELLA
Isabella McRobert Oliver – age 19 – Private (W/76105) Auxiliary Territorial Service.
A camp for French refugees from Normandy was set up at Sompting near Worthing in Sussex and staffed by the ATS. The southern end of the camp was bounded by the railway line and was hit by a high explosive bomb on the 28 May 1944. A number of ATS women were killed and others injured.

Born 1924 in Annan, Dumfriesshire as Isabella McRobert. Daughter of Esther Smith (McRobert) Oliver and step-daughter of William Scott Oliver of Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire who were both living in Fountainhall, Stow when they married in 1932 in Edinburgh.
Killed by enemy action on 28 May 1944 and buried in Stow Cemetery, Midlothian. (CWG)

1914 - 1919

L.CPL. ROBt. AFFLECK, TANK CORPS
Note: Military records show his name as Afflick.
Robert Afflick – age 25 – Lance Corporal (200019) 1st Battalion, Tank Corps.
In 1901 Robert Affleck, aged 8, was living with the Young family at New Channelkirk Farm, Berwickshire. He was a ploughman when he enlisted as Gunner (1141) in the Motor Machine Gun Section of the Royal Field Artillery in May 1915.
Born 1893 in Fauldshope, Kirkhope, Selkirk as Affleck. Son of James Affleck and of Maggie Young. Grandson of George Young of Symington, Stow.
Killed in Action on 8 August 1918 and buried in Bouchoir New British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Channelkirk Parish War Memorial as Affleck.


DRIVER GEO. AITCHISON, A.S.C.
George Aitchison – age 27 – Driver (T2/14411) Army Service Corps.
George was a baker in Stow when he enlisted. He landed in France in August 1915. Two years later he was kicked by a horse and was evacuated to the King George's Hospital in Lambeth, London where he died.
Born 1890 at Blackadder Mount, Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of the late Mary (Henderson) Aitchison (died 1900) and of Thomas Aitchison, and step-son of Janet (Sheil) Aitchison of 17 Chapel Street, Selkirk who had married in 1902 in Caddonfoot, Selkirkshire.
Died on Service on 1 November 1917 and buried in Selkirk Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Selkirk War Memorial.


PTE. ANDw. ANDERSON, K.O.S.B.
Thought to be:
Andrew Anderson – age 20 – Private (6869) 2/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a shepherd when he enlisted. He died of meningitis in Galashiels.
Born 1894 in Gordon, Berwickshire. Son of Robert Anderson and Mary Logan (Shankly) Anderson of Threepwood, Lauder and of Pendical, Southdean, Hawick.
Died on Service on 6 November 1914 and buried in Lauder Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Melrose War Memorial, on the Lauder War Memorial and on the Lauder Parish Church memorial.

John Hall Anderson – age 35 – Private (41199) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
In 1901 John was an assistant grocer in Edinburgh and in 1911 he was a wine salesman. He enlisted as Private (29001) in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) but he was posted to the Royal Scots.
Born 1881 in Stow. Son of the late Mary Ann Turnbull (Taylor) Anderson (died 1886) and of John Anderson. Husband of Margaret Henderson (Miller) Anderson of Morningside, Edinburgh who he married in 1905 in London.
Killed in Action on 12 April 1917 and buried in Brown's Copse Cemetery, Roeux, France.


PTE. PETER ANDERSON, S.R.
Thought to be:
Peter Anderson – age 18 – Private (36707) 5th Reserve Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Peter was an apprentice joiner when he enlisted. He suffered an embolism following tonsillitis and he died in the Auxiliary Hospital at Leven, Scoonie, Fife.
Born 1899 in Pathhead, Dysart, Fife. Son of Alexander and Helen Downie (Brown) Anderson of St. Andrew's Street, Galashiels, Selkirkshire and of 27 Crookston Gardens, Dalkeith, Midlothian. Grandson of Mrs James Brown of Mid Street. Kirkcaldy.
Died on Service on 2 March 1918 and buried in Abbotshall Parish Churchyard, Kirkcaldy, Fife. (CWG)
Also named on the Galashiels War Memorial.


PTE. ALEXr. BELL, K.O.S.B.
Alexander Bell – age 33 – Private (40335) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Alexander enlisted as Private (22333) and was posted to the 7th/8th King's Own Scottish Borderers but he was transferred to the Royal Scots.
Born 1883 in Legerwood, Berwickshire. Son of David and Margaret (Tough) Bell of Cathpair Farm, Stow.
Missing in Action on 21 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Arthur was a tweed warehouseman in Galashiels, Selkirkshire when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1891 in Stow. Son of James Brown and Helen Stein Brown of 53 Kirkbrae, Galashiels and of Hazeldene, Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Galashiels War Memorial.

Herbert Christie Brown – age 35 – Lance Corporal (6717) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Herbert enlisted as Private (5512) in the Cameron Highlanders in September 1900 but he bought himself out and was discharged in November 1902. He was a tweed warehouseman in Galashiels, Selkirkshire when he re-enlisted in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June but was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1882 in Stow. Son of James Brown and Helen Stein Brown of 53 Kirkbrae, Galashiels and of Hazeldene, Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia. Husband of Mary (Hardie) Brown of 44 Stirling Street, Galashiels and of 4294, Montrose Avenue, Westmount, Quebec, Canada who he married in 1910 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Galashiels War Memorial and on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial.

Lt. T. E. THORBURN BROWN, K.O.S.B.
Thomas Elliot Thorburn Brown – age 22 – Lieutenant, 3rd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was educated at Marlborough College in Wiltshire from 1910 to 1914 and was commissioned from the Officer Training Corps in December 1914. He went to France in November 1915 and was wounded in July 1916 and again in June 1917. Thomas was fatally wounded in September 1918 and died two days later in the 56th Casualty Clearing Station at Grevellers.
Born 1896 in Coleman, Texas, USA. Son of Adam and Agnes Halliday (Boog-Scott) Thorburn Brown of Torquhan, Stow.
Died of Wounds on 20 September 1918 and buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Marlborough College memorial.
His younger brother Adam Thorburn Brown, age 36, Second Lieutenant (87960) 1st Lothians and Border Yeomanry, Royal Armoured Corps was killed on 5 June 1940 and is also named on this memorial.


PTE. JAS. BRYDON, CANADIANS
James Brydon – age 34 – Private (910893) 46th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
James was working as a herdsman on the University farm when he enlisted in the 196th (Western Universities) Battalion at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in March 1916. The 196th Battalion was the only Canadian infantry battalion in the Canadian Expeditionary Force raised by universities and largely composed of university staff and students. The universities involved were from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. James sailed with the battalion from Halifax, Nova Scotia in November 1916 and he joined the 46th Battalion in France in February 1917 but he was killed two months later at Vimy Ridge.
Born 1883 at Allanshaws, Ladhope, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Robert Brydon (died 1913) and of Elizabeth (Brotherstone) Brydon of Eskdale Cottage, Stow.
Missing in Action on 10 April 1917 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.


L.CPL. ANDw. BURRELL, TANK CORPS
Andrew Burrell – age 20 – Lance Corporal (200020) “A” Battalion, Tank Corps.
Andrew was a porter with the North British Railway Company at Stow Station when he enlisted as Gunner (1144) 18th Motor Machine Gun Section of the Royal Field Artillery in May 1915.
Born 1897 in Stow. Son of the late John Burrell (died 1916) and of Hellen (Allan) Burrell, of Cotland Place, Stow.
Missing in Action on 20 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the North British Railway Company memorial in Waverley Station in Edinburgh.

L.CPL. ALEXr. CHISHOLM, BLACK WATCH
Alexander Chisholm – age 23 – Lance Corporal (6226) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Alexander lived with his older brother James at Hill Terrace, Stow and was a well known cross-country runner with the Gala Harriers when he enlisted in October 1914. He joined his battalion in France in May 1915 but he was killed near Bethune two months later.
Born 1891 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire as Alexander Thomson Chisholm. Son of the late Janet Anderson (Thomson) Chisholm (died 1909) and of the late Archibald Chisholm (died 1913) formerly of 12 Union Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 19 July 1915 and buried in Gorre British And Indian Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Galashiels War Memorial.

PTE. ARCHd. CHISHOLM, H.L.I.

Archibald Chisholm – age 34 – Private (7545) 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Archibald had been a reservist for four years when he was recalled at the outbreak of war. He was posted to the 1st HLI in France in January 1915 but was fatally wounded at Nueve Chapelle two months later.
Born 1882 in Galashiels [Ladhope] as Archibald William Chisholm. Son of the late Janet Anderson (Thomson) Chisholm (died 1909) and of the late Archibald Chisholm (died 1913) formerly of 12 Union Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 13 March 1915 and buried in Royal Irish Rifles Graveyard, Laventie, France.
Also named on the Galashiels War Memorial.


PTE. CHAs. CHISHOLM, GORDON HIGH.
Charles Chisholm – age 22 – Private (S/6435) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.

Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.
Also named on the Channelkirk Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire.
