PTE. ISABELLA McR. OLIVER, A.T.S.
Isabella's name had been added to the memorial by October 2015.
Isabella McRobert Oliver – age 19 – Private (W/76105) Auxiliary Territorial Service.
A camp for French refugees from Normandy was set up at Sompting near Worthing in Sussex and staffed by the ATS. The southern end of the camp was bounded by the railway line and was hit by a high explosive bomb on the 28 May 1944. A number of ATS women were killed and others injured.
Born 1924 in Annan, Dumfrieshire as Isabella McRobert. Daughter of Esther Smith (McRobert) Oliver and step-daughter of William Scott Oliver of Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire who were both living in Fountainhall, Stow when they married in 1932 in Edinburgh.
Killed by enemy action on 28 May 1944 and buried in Stow Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial.


CAPT. DENIS H. ORROCK, R.A.
Denis Heriot Orrock – age 25 – Captain (71581) 78 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Denis was educated at Edinburgh Academy where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps and from where he gained a commission in the Territorial 78th (Lowland) Field Regiment in May 1937. He studied law at Edinburgh University, graduating in 1938, and had completed his apprenticeship in Edinburgh when war broke out. He landed with the 52nd Division at Cherbourg in June 1940 but the division was evacuated again after only a week. The 78th left the Division in August 1942 bound for Egypt as part of the reinforcements for Eighth Army and arrived in time to take part in the Second Battle of El Alamein in October where Denis was fatally wounded.
Born 1917 in Edinburgh. Son of William Archibald Orrock and Isabella Currie (Ritchie) Orrock of Allanshaugh, Fountainhall, Stow.
Died of Wounds on 4 November 1942 and buried in El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Edinburgh Academy memorial and on the Old College memorial in Edinburgh University.

CO. SGT. MAJ. WILLIAM C. RAMAGE, R.T.R.
William Cockburn Ramage – age 27 – Warrant Officer Class II (7886749) “C” Squadron, 5th Royal Tank Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps.
William landed at Normandy on D-Day+1, 7 June 1944, but he was killed six days later during the battle of Villers-Bocage. He was buried at Amaye- sur-Seulles and was re-interred in August 1945.
Born 1917 in Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of Stephen Hunter Ramage and Jane (Cockburn) Ramage of Cathpair, Stow and of Hassedean, Hawick. Husband of Olive Joan (Davis) Ramage of Haslemere, Surrey who he married in early 1944 in Surrey.
Killed in Action on 13 June 1944 and buried in Hottot-Les-Bagues War Cemetery, France


GUNNER ANDREW RIDDELL, MARTIME REGT.
Andrew Riddell – age 28 – Gunner (3194740) 2 Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Andrew was employed by the London & North Eastern Railway Company at Fountainhall Station, Stow when he enlisted. He was one of 21 gunners on the Defensively Equipped Merchant Ship “Empire Florizel” when she was bombed and sunk off Augusta during the Allied invasion of Sicily.
Born 1915 in Stow. Son of William and Margaret (Wooley) Riddell of Crookston South Mains, Heriot, Stow.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 21 July 1943 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


L.A.C. CLARK RUSSELL, R.A.F.
Note: Served under his birth name.
Clark Scott McLellan – age 22 – Leading Aircraftman (995338) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Clark was killed during an air raid when the Wing Operations Building at Maison Blanche, the Allied maintenance, transport and air base in Algiers, was hit.
Born 1920 in Galashiels, Selkirkshire as Clark Scott McLellan. Son of Catherine Clark (McLellan) Russell and step-son of James Russell of Gala House Gardens. Galashiels who married in 1926 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Husband of Kathleen Morfwyn (Evans) McLellan of Turnpike, Pontypool, Monmouthshire who he married in 1942 in Pontypool.
Killed by enemy action on 15 January 1943 and buried Dely Ibrahim War Cemetery, Algeria.
