PTE. SYDNEY KAY, GORDON HRS.
Sydney Kay, Private (S/40589) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Formerly Private (S/17669) Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Age 21.
Sydney was a ploughman at Mayfield Farm, Kelton near Castle Douglas when he enlisted in January 1916 He was mobilised in October in the A&SH and sent to France in February 1917 where he was transferred to the 2nd Gordons. In November 1917 his battalion moved to Italy.
Born 28/12/1896 at Balmangan Farm, Ross Bay, Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Janet Nichol Hay. Grandson of James and Agnes (Scott) Kay of Whiteneuk, Crossmichael.
Killed in action on 12 July 1918 and buried in Barenthal Military Cemetery, Asiago, Italy.

Walter Kay, Private (15135) 11th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Age 31.
Walter enlisted in September 1914 and landed with his battalion at Bolougne in September 1915. In November the battalion moved to Salonica in northern Greece.
Born 1887 at Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Agnes (Scott) Kay of Whiteneuk, Crossmichael.
Killed in action 2 November 1917 and buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece.


DRIV. WILLIAM KELLY, RFA.
William McKie Kelly, Driver (4322 & 655715) 26th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Age 23.
William enlisted in September 1914 in the Kirkcudbrightshire Battery, II Lowland Brigade, RFA and landed in Egypt in June 1915. The brigade remained in Egypt while the 52nd (Lowland) Division were in Gallipoli but re-joined and were re-number as 261st RFA in May 1916. They were split off again in April 1918 and remained in Egypt while the Division went to France. William contracted malaria and died in the 71st General Hospital in Cairo.
Born 1894 at Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Georgina Kelly. Nephew of Mrs. John Cairns Burnie of Mollace Cottage, Clarebrand, Crossmichael.
Died on Service on 9 November 1918 and buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also listed on the Castle Douglas War Memorial.

PTE. GEORGE LOCKERBIE, KING'S LIVERPOOL RGT.
Note: All records spell the name as Lockerby
George McRobert Lockerby, Private (49570) 20th Battalion (4th City) The King's (Liverpool Regiment) Age 22.
George enlisted as Private (4371) in the 1/8th Battalion (Liverpool Irish) in May 1915. He was wounded at the Somme in 1916 and killed at Arras.
Born 1894 at Crossmichael. Son of George and Elizabeth (McRobert) Lockerby of Chapman Cottages and of Scroggie Hill, Castle Douglas.
Killed in action on 10 April 1917 and buried in the Henin Crucifix Cemetery, France.


L-CORPL. ANDREW MAXWELL, MGC.
Andrew Maxwell, Lance Corporal (37168) 205th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) Formerly Private (22790) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 26.
In 1911 Andrew was a molecatcher and, with his mother Jane, was living with his brother Henry and his family in Crossmichael Village. He enlisted in February 1916 in the KOSB and was posted to the MGC in March 1917. He was killed at Arras.
Born 1891 in Balmaclellan, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of the late Thomas and Jane (McKaig) Maxwell of Crossmichael. Brother of Henry Maxwell of Ferngrove, Crossmichael.
Killed in action 18 May 1917 and buried in Roclincourt Military Cemetery, France.


PTE. JAMES MONTEITH, CAMERON HRS.
James Monteith – age 26 – Private (3921 & 24670) 9th (Labour) Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
James was a labourer at Airds Farm, Crossmichael when he enlisted as Private (2101) in the Ayrshire Yeomanry Reserve in November 1914. He re-enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders in March 1916 and went to France in September. In April 1917 his unit was transferred as 7th Company to the Labour Corps and at about this time he was found to be suffering from a “mental instability”. He was evacuated to hospitals in the UK and in December 1917 was discharged from the army and awarded a Silver War Badge (33225) He died of thrombosis at home in Crossmichael Village. (GRoS – Death Register, Indexed as James Menteith)
Born 1892 at Crossmichael Village. (Source: GRoS – Birth Register, Indexed as James Menteath)
Son of James and Jemima (McCubbin) Monteith of Crossmichael.
Died on 14 June 1918 and buried in Crossmichael Parish Churchyard Extension (CWG)

PTE. JOHN MURRAY, ROYAL SCOTS.
John Murray, Private (51204) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots. Formerly Private (28285) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 19.
John was a vanman, living at 237 Cumberland Street, Glasgow when he enlisted in February 1916. He was mobilised in February 1917 in the KOSB and went to France on 23 March 1918. He was posted to the 15th Royal Scots on 1 April, was reported missing on 16 April and that he had died of a gunshot wound in the Kriegslazerette at Leuze as a Prisoner of War.
Born c1899 at Crossmichael. Son of John and Maria Todd (Caven) Murray of Dryburgh Farm, Clarebrand, Crossmichael.
Died of wounds on 21 April 1918 and buried in Leuze Communal Cemetery, Belgium.


L-CORPL. NORMAN M. MURRAY KOSB (See McMURRAY)


PTE. ROBERT McBURNIE, KOSB.
Robert Cameron McBurnie, Private (7522) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 36.
Born 1878 at Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Samuel and Marion (Edgar) McBurnie of Kirkcudbright. Husband of Mary Jane (Moffat) McBurnie of Crossmichael Village who he married in 1904. Mobilised August 1914.
Died of wounds 1 June 1915 and buried in the Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. Also listed on the Motherwell War Memorial and, together with his brother Samuel, on the Kirkcudbright War Memorial.
Robert left the army, as a Sergeant in the KOSB, and was living with his wife and family in Motherwell when war was declared. He accepted the rank of Private so that he could rejoin his old Battalion. He was killed by shell fire in a communication trench when looking for his brother Samuel, also a "Regular", who he had not seen since 1909. Samuel was later killed in France. The brothers feature in Ian Devlin's book 'We will remember them - Kirkcudbright's Sons 1914-1918'

PTE. JOHN McCUBBIN, KOSB.
John McCubbin, Private (29842) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 20.
John enlisted in October 1914 at the age of 17 and joined the 1st KOSB Lewis gun section in France in February 1917. He was evacuated home in August and returned to France in November 1917.
Born 1897 at Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Girthon, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Alexander and Agnes McCubbin of Crossmichael.
Killed in action on 16 December 1917 and buried in Heudicourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


GUNR. JOHN S. McGILL, RGA.
Not listed by CWGC/SNWM
John Sproat McGill, Gunner (76888) Royal Garrison Artillery. Latterly, Private (452092) 460th Agricultural Company, Labour Corps. Age 29.
John was a draper in Preston when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised in April 1916 and went to France with the 133rd Siege Battery of the RGA in August 1916. He served at the Somme and at Beaumont Hamel but in October he was accidentally injured in his eye by a ram rod and then had his appendix removed. He was evacuated to hospital in Bradford and in April 1917 was transferred to the Labour Corps. He was re-admitted to hospital in February 1918 and was diagnosed with a detached retina. In April he was discharged from the army and awarded a Silver War Badge (401075) He died at home in Preston of sarcoma of the liver.
Born 1889 at Crossmichael. Son of William Gifford McGill and of Isabella Livingston (Sproat) McGill of Knockallan Farm, Crossmichael. Husband of Margaret (Burrow) McGill of Preston, Lancashire who he married in 1913 at Preston.
Died on 27 February 1919.
There does not appear to be any connection between his injury and later cause of death.


PTE. ROBERT McKIE, HLI.
Robert Corrie McKie, Private (B/21284) 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Age 25.
Robert was a dairyman at Isles Farm, Dalbeattie when he enlisted in 5th Dragoon Guards in September 1914. He was posted to the 11th HLI and joined them in France in June 1915. He was wounded at Loos on 25 September 1915 and killed at Vermelles.
Born 1891 at Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Samuel and Janet McKie of Maxwellfield Farm, Crossmichael.
Killed in action on 4 July 1916 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.


PTE. JAMES McKILL, KOSB.
James McKill, Private (29300) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 20.
James was employed on farm work when he enlisted in the 2nd KOSB. An orphan, he had been brought up by Mrs. Edward McKnight. He died in the 44th Casualty Clearing Station near Ypres.
Born 1897 at the Union Poorhouse, Kirkcudbright. Son of Margaret McKill.
In 1901 James, age 4, was a boarder with the McCartney family at Glenlochar Row, Crossmichael, but in 1911 James, age 14, was a boarder with William Johnston and his sister Mrs. Mary Jane (Johnston) McKnight in Crossmichael Village.
Died of wounds on 19 August 1917 and buried in the Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No.3 Ypres, Belgium.

Robert enlisted in December 1914 and joined his battalion in France in February 1915.
Born 1893 at Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of David McClelland and his first wife Jane (Johnston) McClelland of Crossmichael. Enlisted December 1914.
Missing in action 17 May 1915 and listed on La Touret Memorial, France.


PTE. DAVID McLELLAND, GORDON HRS.
David McClelland, Private (1340) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 20.
David had enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders in February 1914. He was mobilised in August and joined his battalion on 19 October 1914. They had landed at Zeebrugge two weeks earlier.
Born 1895 at Crossmichael. Son of David McClelland and his second wife Janet (Fisher) McClelland of Danevale Crossing, Crossmichael. Mobilised August 1914.
Missing in action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


PTE. JOHN McLELLAND, GORDON HRS.
John James McClelland, Private (9764) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 28.
In 1911 John was serving with the Gordons and was based at Goojerat Barracks, Colchester and so was probably a reservist when he was working on a farm at Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire in August 1914. He joined his battalion at the end of August 1914. They had landed at Boulogne two weeks earlier.
Born 1887 at Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of David McClelland and his first wife Jane (Johnston) McClelland of Crossmichael.
Killed in action on 19 December 1915 and buried in La Clytte Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Colvend War Memorial.


PTE. JOHNSTONE McLELLAND, HLI.
Served as James Johnston.
James McClelland, Private (13664) 14th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Age 22.
James enlisted in the 15th HLI, known by its original title of the Glasgow Tramways Battalion, and landed with them at Boulogne in November 1915.
Born 1894 at Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of David McClelland and his first wife Jane (Johnston) McClelland of Crossmichael.
Missing in action on 28 November 1917 and named on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.
Also named on the Roll of Honour in Crossmichael Parish Church, as James Johnstone-McLelland, and on the 15th HLI memorial in the Museum of Transport in Glasgow, as James McClelland.

Norman was working at Dryburgh Farm, Clarebrand, Crossmichael, when he enlisted in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915.
Born 1887 at Tongland, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Isabella Murray.
Killed in action 29 December 1915 and buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Turkey. Also listed on the Auchencairn War Memorial.
Norman's story is told in Stuart Wilson's book ' Answering the Call - Auchencairn and the First World War'


DRIVR. THOMAS REID, TANK CORPS.
Thomas Reid, Driver (306128) 2nd Battalion, Tank Corps. Formerly Private (21665) Royal Engineers. Age 20.
Born 1898 at Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire. Son of Thomas Reid and of Mary Russell (Pender) Reid who died in Kilmacolm in 1900.
In 1901 Thomas, age 2, was living with his uncle and aunt David Allan Reid and Agnes Reid in New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire.
In 1911 Thomas, aged 12, was living with his aunt Agnes Reid at Culgruff Lodge, Crossmichael.
Died of wounds on 12 August 1918 and buried in Vignacourt British Cemetery, France.


LIEUT. ROBERT RENNIE, CAMERONIANS.
Note: All military records have F. R. Rennie.
Robert Rennie, Second Lieutenant: 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Formerly Private (6324) 1/5th Cameronians. Age 24.
Robert was educated at Clarebrand school and at Glasgow University where he obtained a Masters degree in the Arts in June 1914. He was studying for the ministry when war broke out and, as a Territorial, he was mobilised in August 1914, landing with his battalion at Le Havre in November. He was gassed at Loos but as Private F. R. Rennie was granted a commission in the 9th Battalion in November 1915.
Born 1892 at Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Alexander and Margaret (Nish) Rennie of Campdouglas, Glenlochar and of Ermenzie Farm, Crossmichael.
Killed in action on 9 February 1916 and buried in Nieppe Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour.

James Riley, Private (23373) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 20.
James had served his apprenticeship as a tailor in Eaglesfield, Dumfriesshire but was a chauffeur at Glenlochar House, Townhead of Greenlaw, Crossmichael when he enlisted in April 1916.
Born 1895 at Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. Son of John and Martha (Farnell) Riley of Townhead of Greenlaw, Crossmichael and of Marks Farm, Kirkcudbright.
Missing in action on 25 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
Also named on the Middlebie Parish War Memorial, on the Eaglesfield District War Memorial, on the Kirtle Church memorial in Kirtlebridge.


PTE. SAMUEL SHENNAN, DRAGOON GUARDS.
Samuel Shennan, Private (D/17188) 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) Age 34.
Samuel was living with his family at George Street in Motherwell and was the manager of a drapers shop in Muir Street, Motherwell when he enlisted.
Born 1884 at Crossmichael. Son of Agnes Shennan. Husband of Agnes (Hoey) Shennan who he married at Dalziel, Lanarkshire in 1914.
Killed in action on 26 August 1918 and buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, France. Also listed on the Motherwell War Memorial.


PTE. JOHN D. SUTHERLAND, KOSB.
John Downie Sutherland, Private (1637) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway), King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 21.
Born 1893 at New Lanark. Son of James and Mary Sutherland of Kirkliston, Edinburgh.
Missing in action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kirkliston, Newbridge and Westerton War Memorial in Kirkliston.
Info from "Stewartry" indicates that this man's service number was in the range issued to a group of local men who enlisted just before war was declared.

Formerly Corporal (13514) 15th Highland Light Infantry (1st Glasgow). Age 26.
James was living with his brother John at John Gray Street in Langside and they were working for the Glasgow Corporation Tramways when they enlisted in September 1914 in 15th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (Glasgow Tramways Battalion) They landed with their battalion at Boulogne in November 1915. He transferred to the Cameronians and was awarded the M.M. for bravery in the field as 30354 Sjt. J. Wilson, Sco. Rif.
Born 1891 at Crossmichael. Son of John and Agnes (McLean) Wilson. Enlisted September 1914 in 15th Battalion (Glasgow Tramways) Highland Light Infantry before transferring to Cameronians.
Missing in action on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour and on the Glasgow Tramways Newlands Depot memorial, now in the Parkhead Depot.

John was living with his brother James at John Gray Street in Langside and they were working for the Glasgow Corporation Tramways when they enlisted in September 1914 in 15th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (Glasgow Tramways Battalion) They landed with their battalion at Boulogne in November 1915. John was wounded and later transferred to Y& L Regiment.
Born 1889 at Crossmichael. Son of John and Agnes (McLean) Wilson. Husband of Isabel Jane (Skene) Wilson of Rhonehouse, Kelton Parish who he married in 1916.
Died of wounds 9 April 1917 and buried in the Railway Dugout Burial Ground, Ypres, Belgium.
Also named on the memorial in Kelton Parish Church, on the Glasgow Roll of Honour and on the Glasgow Tramways Newlands Depot memorial, now in the Parkhead Depot.

A third brother was also a Sergeant: Andrew McLean Wilson (148298) 78th Canadian Infantry was wounded twice at Vimy Ridge but survived the war. Born 1885 he had 5 years pre-war service in the TA with 1/6th HLI.


PTE. JOHN WILSON, KOSB.
John Wilson, Private (5343 & 241628) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 44.
John enlisted in June 1916 and joined his battalion in Egypt. He was reported missing at Gaza.
Born 1873 at Kells, Kircudbrightshire. Son of John and Helen (Chesney) Wilson. Husband of Margaret Jane Wilson of Crossmichael.
Missing in action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.

1939 - 1945


ROBERT CRAWFORD, KOSB.
Robert Docherty Crawford, Private (3193884) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 28.
Born 1916 at Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Annie Crawford of Square Point, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Killed in action between 9 and 15 July 1944 and buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
The 1st KOSB entered Caen on 9 July 1944.


HAROLD DOIG, ABRA.
Harold Edgar Doig, Sergeant (6141509) 1 Airlanding Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery. Age 29.
Pre-war Harold served with the Territorials in the 5th East Surrey Regiment which in 1938 became the 57th (East Surrey) Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Born 1914 at Camberwell, London. Son of Harold and Georgina Doig. Husband of Emma (White) Doig of Wimbledon, Surrey who he married in 1940 at Crossmichael.
Killed in action between 20 and 21 September 1944 and buried in Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Holland.


JAMES MCCUTCHEON, KOSB.
James McCutcheon, Private (3192340) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 21.
Born 1919 at Kirkinner/Glasserton, Wigtownshire. Son of Hugh and Janet (Murray) McCutcheon of Culvennan Farm, Crossmichael.
Died of wounds 21 April 1941 in Vert Memorial Hospital, Haddington, East Lothian and buried in Girthon Parish Cemetery, Kirkcudbrightshire (CWG)
James was one of the six men of 5th KOSB killed on the beach between Dunbar and North Berwick when a mine they were guarding exploded.

SAMUEL McKNIGHT, KOSB.
Samuel Walker McKnight, Private (3193852) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 27.
Born 1916 at Crossmichael. Son of Samuel and Mary (Muir) McKnight.
Husband of Sarah Annie (Warren) McKnight who he married in 1940 at Crossmichael
Killed in action 12 June 1944 and buried in La Deliverande War Cemetery, Douvres, France.


JOHN RAE, RAF.
John Alexander Rae, Leading Aircraftsman (536791) Royal Air Force. Age 26.
Born 1914 at Crossmichael.Son of George Charles Rae and of Jane Muir (Bickett) Rae; step-son of Florence Annie (Dale) Rae of Greenlaw, Crossmichael.
Killed on active service 25 October 1940 during an bombing raid on RAF Montrose and buried in Crossmichael Parish Churchyard (CWG)


ROBERT ROBB, RAF.
Robert John Johnston Robb, Sergeant (Air Gunner) (968056) 40 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 28.
Born 1914 at Newton Stewart (birth registered in the adjacent parishes of Minnigaf, Kirkcudbrightshire and Penningham, Wigtownshire) Son of Robert Davidson Robb and of Margaret Robb. Husband of Helen Campbell (Clark) Robb of Castle Douglas who he married in 1941.
Died on Active Service 18 March 1942 and buried in Suez War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
40 Squadron, Bomber Command were flying Wellington Bombers from bases in the Middle East. Robert's aircraft was on a test flight when it crashed, cause unknown. The crew of four were killed.

JAMES ROSS, KOSB.
James Ross, Private (3194748) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 27.
Serving as Defence Equipped Merchant Ship Personnel.
Born 1914 at Glasserton, Wigtownshire. Son of Hugh and Jane Ross of Castle Douglas.
Missing in action/Lost at Sea 16 March 1941 and listed on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
It seems likely that James was serving onboard the Motor Tanker SS Erodona when she was torpedoed by U-110 in mid-Atlantic causing an explosion in Tank 4. Of the crew of 57, 32 crew and 4 gunners were killed.


WILLIAM SHAW, RS.
William Stanley Shaw, Fusilier (14595363) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 36.
William had been a member of the Home Guard and a mason with Messrs Carruthers and Thomson of Crossmichael.
Born 1908 at Crossmichael. Son of John and Annie Shaw.
Killed in action 28 May 1944 and buried in the Beach Head War Cemetery, Anzio, Italy.


JOHN WOOD, KOSB.
John McMichael Wood, Lance Corporal (3189456) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 24.
Born 1919 at Balmaghie, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Mrs. G Wood of Castle Douglas.
Died of wounds 22 October 1944 and buried in Jonkerbos War Cemetery, Nijmegan, Holland.

I should see a member of the Community Council in the next few days, I can ask them. Failing that I am giving a talk about Scottish Stained Glass in Crossmichael in November and that will be another opportunity.
