Remembering The Men Of Lyon Street

Maryhill MSP Patricia Ferguson has tabled a Parliamentary Motion remembering the First World War sacrifice made by the families of Lyon Street, the site of which is in the Maryhill Constituency.

The Labour MSP's motion recognises the debt owed to the men of Lyon Street, noting that 211 men were recruited from the small street to His Majesty's forces in the First World War, 45 of whom lost their lives. The motion notes that this is thought to be the largest number of fatalities from any street in the United Kingdom.

Ms Ferguson goes on to recognise the efforts being made to find the original plaque erected in their honour and to commend the work of the pupils, teachers and parents of St Joseph’s Primary School who have caused a new plaque to be erected in the school which commemorates the sacrifice made by the families of Lyon Street and marks the location of the original street.

Patricia Ferguson MSP said:

"As Remembrance Day approaches it is fitting that the sacrifice of the families of Lyon Street is recognised. The most appropriate tribute that I could make as the MSP for the area in which the street was located was to table a Parliamentary Motion.

"Although campaigners have not yet been able to locate the original memorial I am pleased that through the efforts of pupils, parents and staff a plaque has been placed in St Jospeh's Primary, on the site of the original street, which will ensure the immense contribution of the families of Lyon Street will not be forgotten."

I'm doing some researching before the Family History event at Aberdeen on 25th April. I thought I pick one street to check details. As there were already some photos of the Gallowgate I used that.
I have found 40+ so far it was a small street with many families.
