A THOMSON RE
Andrew Alexander Thomson – age 32 – Sapper (167319) Royal Engineers.
(General Base Depot attached to the Works Office, Kirechoj.)
Andrew was living at Glenlee, Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire and was working as a wheelwright when he enlisted in February 1916. He was mobilised in May and was posted to Salonica in January 1917 but died of dysentery in the 42nd General Hospital in Kalamaria.
Born 1884 in Parton. Son of the late William and Jane (Charters) Thomson. Brother of James Thomson of Parton Village. (family grave in Parton Churchyard)
Died on active service on 19 June 1917 and buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece.
Also named on the Parton War Memorial, on the memorial in Parton Church and on the Roll of Honour in Parton Village Hall.


J TWEEDIE KOSB
John Cavan Tweedie, Military Medal – age 26 – Lance Sergeant (40217) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John served his apprenticeship as a bootmaker with T. Kirk of King Street, Castle Douglas and was working in Glasgow when he enlisted in October 1914. He served at Arras, was wounded twice and was awarded a M.M. for bravery in the field as 40217 Cpl. (L/Sjt.) J. Tweedie, K.O.S.B. (Castle Douglas). John died at Buzancy.
Born 1893 at Burnside Buildings, Castle Douglas in Kelton Parish. Son of Andrew and Margaret (Cavan) Tweedie of Marle Street, Castle Douglas.
Missing in Action on 23 July 1918 and named on the Soissons Memorial, France.
Also named on the Castle Douglas War Memorial and on the Trinity United Free Church memorial, now in the Castle Douglas Parish Church.


R WHITE ROYAL NAVY
Robert White – age 23 – Leading Stoker (K/29229) HMS Indefatigable, Royal Navy.
Robert was a blacksmith when he joined the Royal Navy as SS/109556 with his friend Archibald Middleton SS/109555 (see above) in January 1910. They were posted to HMS Carnarvon in May 1910 and to HMS Indefatigable in February 1911. Robert's rating and service number were changed on October 1915. He was lost at the Battle of Jutland.
Born 1892 at Back King Street, Castle Douglas in Kelton Parish. Son of the late Patrick and Elizabeth (Cooper) White of Castle Douglas. Brother of Agnes of 21 Carlingwark Hill, Castle Douglas.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 31 May 1916 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon. England.
Also named on the Castle Douglas War Memorial.


M McVITAE BLACK WATCH
Malcolm McVitie – age 21 – Private (291643) 1/6th (Perthshire) Battalion, BlackWatch (Royal Highlanders)
Malcolm enlisted in April 1916.
Born 1897 in Auchencairn, Rerrick. Son of William and Jane (Thomson) McVitie of Hazelfield Cottage, Auchencairn. (family grave in Rerrick Parish Churchyard)
Missing in Action on 21 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Rerrick Parish War Memorial in Dundrennan.

R JOHNSTONE COMMANDO 39-45
Robert Johnstone – age 24 – Private (3189032) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Serving with 9 Commando.
Born 1920 at Castle Douglas in Kelton Parish. Foster-son of Mrs. E. A. Kean of Castle Douglas.
Missing in Action on 3 February 1944 and named on the Cassino Memorial, Italy.
