Teddy

S/11551 is the man you are after, as you correctly surmised he has a local connection.

S/11551 L/Cpl James Murray Hannah was in the Lewis Gun section, 13 Platoon, "D" Company of the 1st Gordon Highlanders.
He was the son of Peter and Jeannie Hannah of Parton, Kircudbrightshire and husband of Jeannie Miller, Gatelawbridge, Thornhill. They had seven children.

He was a 32 year old shepherd at Mitchellslacks, Thornhill when he attested at Dumfries on 1st Feb 1916. He was mobilised on 20th March and reported at Berwick the following day. He landed in France on 7th July 1916. He was KIA on 16th June 1917, shot through the head by a sniper in the area of Infantry Hill near Monchy-le-Preux.

Also has an individual memorial inside Parton Church. This other thread also contains a little extra information.

Teddy

I am fairly certain this man will be Gnr. 74631 Geo Cranston Baird R.G.A.
I cannot find anything to link him to Thornhill, if you are aware of one or know where he is buried please send me a PM.

This man was medically discharged on 7th August 1918 and died on the 23rd at Cambuslang of war related causes. His NOK was his brother residing there.
I have enough conclusive evidence to present a case to CWGC / MOD to have him accepted as a war casualty.

Update: Case submitted 19th March

Teddy

There is a James Hannah, Gordon Highlanders on the Closeburn memorial & Roll. It is likely to be the same man.

2) Serg. John Black, KOSB
I checked the memorial and found John Black is not KOSB.
This looks like him. He was born Morton, resided Thornhill, enlisted at Dumfries and an A/Sgt

Name: BLACK, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Serjeant
Regiment/Service: Cameron Highlanders
Unit Text: 6th Bn.
Age: 26
Date of Death: 12/10/1916
Service No: 17527
Additional information: Son of Mrs. Christina Black, of The Museum, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, and the late John Black.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: III. K. 10.
Cemetery: ADANAC MILITARY CEMETERY, MIRAUMONT

This MIGHT be John Mitchell but you would need more to confirm 100%. SDGW have him born and enlisted Dumfries, residing Kirkconnel

Name: MITCHELL, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: King's Own Scottish Borderers
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Date of Death: 30/07/1916
Service No: 22799
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Pier and Face 4 A and 4 D.
Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL

Could this be Robertson? Again you need evidence to link him to Thornhill.

Name: ROBERTSON, JAMES STEWART
Initials: J S
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots
Unit Text: 9th Bn.
Age: 18
Date of Death: 13/04/1918
Service No: 58943
Additional information: Son of John and Alice Robertson, of Bowhouses, Terregles, Dumfries.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 1.
Memorial: PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL

He was formerly 2/13578 T.R. Bn., 53257 H.L.I.
SDGW has him born and residing Terregles, enlisted Dumfries, KIA
