UKNIWM Ref 44151
In Gretna Old Parish Church, near to Gretna Green civic memorial at OS Map Ref: NY 319 680
IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE/ REV. JOHN OWEN STAFFORD M.A./ FOR 35 YEARS MINISTER OF THIS PARISH, WHO/ DIED THROUGH ENEMY ACTION, 7TH APRIL 1941/ AGED 71 YEARS/ THIS TABLET WAS PLACED HERE/ BY HIS CONGREGATION AND FRIENDS
He was one of those who died in the bombing raid and is listed on the Roll of Honour for that event. He also lost his son in the first world war and he is listed on the Gretna civic memorial.
It must be fairly rare for the son to be killed by enemy action in WW1 and the father to be killed by enemy action in WW2!
