This memorial is one of the memorials I visit in 11th November. It is one of the only memorials I know which contains the name of a relative, Private John McNay of the Gordon Highlanders.

The Second World War panels are at an angle which doesn't lend itself to good photographs. However, I now have a new camera so I may go back to get better photographs of this memorial.

Here's closeups of the WW2 names:

Hope you don't mind David I thought I'd chip in an extra pic of the monument. I photographed it a few times (and the sun always seemed to be directly behind it) before I finally got a picture that was reasonable bright.

I don't mind at all, since my pictures of the memorial were utter rubbish.

A few of the names on the WW2 section are in my area of research (Lanarkshire men at Arnhem) so I will add what I have.

Under Royal Armoured Corps, the first name is Sgt Thomas McGregor, he was a member of C Troop 1st Airborne Reconnaisance Squdron, at Arnhem the squadron were to race ahead and secure the bridge, as C troop formed up at Wolfheze and raced off down the track beside the railway line, Sgt McGregor was in the second jeep - as the jeep ahead went over a crest it was hit by heavy fire, Sgt McGregors jeep also immediately came under heavey fire with several men hit, Sgt McGregor and the others took cover in a ditch by the track, as he raised himself up slightly to see the source of the fire he was hit several times in the chest killing him instantly. The ambush is covered very well in the book "Remember Arnhem" by John Fairley - I always place a cross on his grave and at the site he was killed.

Under KOSB, is Corporal Joseph Thomson, he was a member of support Company of 7th KOSB in one of the Machine Gun Platoons, he died during the evacuation at Arnhem, his body being swept downstream to where he was recovered and buried.

Under RASC is Sgt Alexander Anderson, he served with the HQ of 1st Airborne Division, at Arnhem he was wounded and captured, he was recovering from his wounds but during the forced marches of prisoners his condition deteriorated, shortly after his liberation and return home he died of illness, he is buried in the nearby Airbles Cemetary. Sgt Anderson hasnt been included in the official Arnhem Roll of Honour, but I have asked that as his death could be attributed to the Battle he is included and have received word that in the next reprint he will be included.

Under Parachute Regiment are firstly Alex Munro, who was a member of 156 Parachute Battalion, he was killed in the Battalions attacks towards the Dreyenseweg (where the 156 Battalion have their memorial marker stone) - his body was never recovered. Secondly is James Sneddon, Pte Sneddon was a Bren Gunner also in 156 Parachute Battalion, after the attack in which Pte Munro was killed the Battalion were forced back towards the main body of the Division In Oosterbeek, during the withdrawal Pte Sneddon remained behind with his Bren to cover his mates as they crossed some open ground - unfortunately in doing so he was killed.

I have scans relating to these men and will try post them later.

Alistair

The information you've provided is great, Alistair. What newspapers are the cuttings from?

Hi,
Glad the scans are of interest, the cuttings are from the Wishaw Press and Motherwell times, unfortunately I havent always been too good at marking up source and date.

I have gone through the papers in Motherwell, Hamilton, Blackburn, Airdrie and Carlisle scanning Arnhem related bits - and this week I hope to go to Lanark, Glasgow and Edinburgh to get a load more scans.

I have been told that there may actually be a Roll of Honour for Motherwell, with photographs for many of the deceased. I'm not sure if this is the case, but I'll investigate further.

Would this be WW1 or WW2?

First World War. But this may just be a rumour. If anyone knows differently, and knows where I can get access to a copy I'd be very grateful.
