Records of Merchant Seaman Deaths provides some more information. Ian C Smith of 5 Fallside Road, Bothwell. Serving aboard SS Manela. Rank: Engineroom Storekeeper. Died 15/4/1942 at Simonstown. Cause of Death, "Fracture of skull caused by motorcar accident on shore."

As the cause of death was not due to enemy action he is not included on the CWGC database.
