Hamilton Advertiser (31/8/1918): Pte A Bell Halley, Northampton Regt, and son of Mrs Halley, 2 Vincent Place, and the late Hugh Halley, died in the 27th General Hospital, Abassia, Egypt, on 9th August. Private Halley, who was 44 years of age, was married, and previous to the outbreak of war, resided in Birmingham. A native of Lanark, he served his apprenticeship as a tanner in the Lanark Tan Works, and later held an important position in this connection in Birmingham. He enlisted shortly after the outbreak of war, was for three years in Egypt, taking part the campaign which culminated in the fall of Jerusalem. Private Halley, when in Lanark, was a well-known footballer in junior circles, and was very popular with all who knew him. Three other sons of Mrs Halley are serving the colours.
