This soldier is listed as being from Wishaw, I dont see him on the memorial, anyone any further information on him.

Born: Newry, Co Down Enlisted: Newmains, Lanarkshire.
Age: 42 Date of Death: 28/06/1915 Cause: Killed in action.
Previous Military Service: Served during the South African War and also served in India.
Family Notes: Son of the late Peter and Margaret Smith, of 7, Margret Square, Newry, Co. Down; husband of Frances Grace Smith, of 10, Station Cottages, Morningside, Newmains, Lanarkshire.
Religion: Wesleyan/Methodist (1911 Census).

News is anxiously awaited as to the fate of Sergeant David Smith (7303) 7th Royal Scots, who was reported missing on June 28, and has not been heard of since. Sergeant Smith is the possessor of medals for the Boer War and the campaign in India. His parents, who belong to Newry, are at present residing at 39 Lavinia Street, Belfast, would be grateful for any information.

Census Notes: The 1911 Census shows Sergeant Smith’s parents, Peter (aged 59) and Margret (aged 55), residing at, No. 39 in Lavinia Street, Cromac, South Belfast, Co Antrim, also present were their children, Daisy (aged 21), Evelyn (aged 19), Thomas J. (aged 16) and their married daughter, Mrs. Jessie White (aged 32) and her son, Wesley White (aged 10). His parents stated that during their marriage they had twelve children, seven of whom were alive at the time of the Census.

Whilst his unit is listed on the CWGC as 8th Bn HLI, there has been discussion regarding the 8th Bn and it roll in Gallipoli. I have found with the assistance of other members of this site the following info

Battalion Details
4.8.14 Lanark: attached Lothian Inf. Bde. Scottish Coast Defences. There is little information available about this unit. One source states that as there were insufficient volunteers for service overseas it was disbanded in May 1916 and the personnel posted to the 8th Provisional Bn., which had been formed from the 8th H.L.I. in 1915. But it is possible that the volunteers for service overseas had been drafted to the other four Territorial battalions of the regiment. 2nd and 3rd Line battalions were not formed.

I believe this is th Mich Lyons listed on this memorial; (It is interesting to note that the 8th Bn HLI is also shown as his regt, as is the soldier's above).

I believe that this soldier is the Michael Lyons listed on this memorial;

Date of Death: 29/06/1915 Cause: Died of wounds (Sustained Gallipoli).
Other notes: Private Lyon’s Medal Index Card shows him as entering the Gallipoli theatre of Operations on 2/4/1915.
Special notes: Private Lyons’s unit is shown in all the common records (Soldiers Died etc) as “8th Bn. Highland Light Infantry, research would indicate that this unit did not serve at Gallipoli or indeed serve overseas during the Great War. the unit itself was disbanded in 1916.
Grave/Memorial: Special Memorial. 54. Pink Farm Cemetery, Helles.

I was delighted to find out the information about Sergeant David Smith who died at Gallipoli during the Great War. He was my great-grandfather and I have installed a memorial bench in his honour at Morningside where his name is on the memorial. It was also interesting to find out so much about his family in Ireland and I would love to find out more about my Irish connections. I did visit a newsagent in Margaret Square Newry which his parents owned at one time. The 1911 census shows that he had a sister called Evelyn. My late mother (his grand-daughter) was also called Evelyn. If anyone has more information regarding my great-grandfather I would welcome this.

It has been compared to the one at Clitheroe, also in Lancashire but although they are similar they are not the same.
