Leith Congregational Church
Location: South Leith Parish Church, Kirkgate, Leith
OS Ref: NT 270 760

Thanks to Innes Gray via Andrew Grant for these photographs from South Leith Parish Church.

I really like these tablets. I'm assuming that the little carvings at the top of them mean that one set of names were soldiers and one set were sailors

I recognised the name of David Peace, he died in the Gretna rail disaster and his sister lived in Hawick. He was one of 3 men with a Hawick connection who died that day:

Additional information: Son of John W. Peace, of 20, North Junction St., Leith, Edinburgh. Born at Leith, Edinburgh.

From 'The Scotsman', Monday 5th June 1922, Page 2.

"Lord Provost Hutchison yesterday at the forenoon service in Leith Congregational Church, Constitution Street, unveiled the memorial to sixteen men connected with the congregation who died in the war.

The memorial consists of two marble mural tablets.

The service was conducted by the Rev. G. B. Shepherd and the Rev. T. C. Murphy."

There is another Congregational Church in Leith. I'd be interested to know why this memorial has ended up in the South Leith PC rather than the Duke Street Congregational Church?
