Archibald Kerr Sturgeon, Private (241798) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 20. Enlisted October 1917. 1/4th Bn. KOSB. Transferred to 7th/8th Bn. Killed at Buzancy.
Born 1898 at Dalbeattie. Son of Andrew and Agnes (Orr) Sturgeon.
Killed in Action 23 July 1918. Buried in Buzancy Military Cemetery, France.

and his cousin

James Sturgeon, Company Sergeant Major (29352) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 25. Mobilised August 1914 1/5th Bn. KOSB. Transferred to 1st Bn. Wounded at Gallipoli. Killed at Bourlon Wood.
Born 1892 at Dalbeattie. Son of Eliza Sturgeon. (sister of Andrew and William)
Missing in Action 2 June 1917. Remembered on the Arras Memorial, France.

William Sturgeon, Sergeant (2103) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Latterly (148042) Labour Corps. Age 51. Mobilised August 1914. Transferred to Royal Scots Fusiliers, Labour Corps. Served in Galloway Rifles and TA from January 1884.
Born 1867 at Dalbeattie. Son of Robert and Ann (Lindores) Sturgeon. Husband of the late Helen McKean Goudie Sturgeon.
Died 6 July 1917 in Blairgowrie Cottage Hospital, Perthshire. Buried in Dalbeattie Cemetery.

LCPL. ROBERT SWANSTON, KOSB.
Robert Swanston, Lance Corporal (1779) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 20. Killed by a shell alongside his friend Private Alexander McHenry.
Born 1895 at Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Mr G Swanston of Cole Hole, Munches, Dalbeattie.
Killed in Action 9 December 1915. Buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. Also remembered on the War Memorial in Buittle Church.

Robert Teesdale, Corporal (1097) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 19. Mobilised August 1914.
Born 1895 at Dalbeattie. Son of Sergeant Major R Teesdale RA who was for many years the janitor of Dalbeattie Public School.
Killed in Action 11 June 1915. Buried in Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

PTE. ROBERT J THOMPSON, GORDONS.
Robert John Thompson, Private (S/11849) 8th/10th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age ? Enlisted March 1916.
Born ? at Dalbeattie (SNWM)
Missing in Action 28 March 1918. Remembered on the Arras Memorial, France.

GUNNER. JOSEPH TWEEDIE, RGA.
Joseph McWilliam Tweedie, Gunner (190934) 342nd Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Age 32.
Born 1887 at Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrighshire. Son of Mr & Mrs Andrew Tweedie of Marle St. Castle Douglas. Husband of Sarah Tweedie of Borgue Village, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Killed in Action 27 May 1918. Buried in Bienvillers Military Cemetery, France.

PTE. JAMES VARNEY
Not listed by CWGC/SNWM. The Stewartry RoH has an entry for a James Varney of Dalbeattie but no information.
On the 1901 census there is a Varney family with the "head" as James aged 35 - too old for service?

PTE. JAMES WEEKS, GORDONS.
Thought to be:
James Henry Weaks, Private (11061) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 20.
Born 1895 at Paisley, Renfrewshire. Son of John and Margaret Weaks of Paisley. On his death the local newspaper reported that James Weaks had left Dalbeattie some 3 years before and had joined the RSF at Paisley. He was reported killed at Nueve Chapelle.
Missing in Action 14 March 1915. Remembered on the Le Touret Memorial, France.

QMS. JAMES WEIR, KOSB.
James Weir, Company Quartermaster Sergeant (81526) "D" Company, 50th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps. Formerly (1926) KOSB. Age 23. Enlisted September 1914 1/5th Bn. KOSB. Served at Ypres, Peronne and Amiens. Killed in action at Transvillers (sic) near Amiens. A student at Glasgow University at the outbreak of war he was also a machine gun instructor at Grantham.
Born 1895 at Corsock Bridge, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Annie Weir of the Schoolhouse, Corsock, Dalbeattie.
Killed in Action 8 August 1918. Buried in Franvillers Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

PTE. RICHARD WELSH, CANADIANS.
Richard Welsh, Private (457361) 7th Company, Canadian Machine Gun Corps. Age 29. Enlisted June 1915 at Montreal. Previously served 4 years with KOSB.
Born 1888 at Glasgow. In 1901 living at Port St. Dalbeattie with brother James as "Boarders" with Mrs. Mary Stewart.
Killed in Action 9 April 1917. Buried in Bois-Carre British Cemetery, Thelus, France. Also remembered on the Memorial at St. Peter's RC Church in Dalbeattie.
Though to be some of the children from the Glasgow area placed with Dalbeattie families.

Jeanie Turnbull Wright, Worker (46868) Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps. Age 20.
Born 1898 at ? Daughter of the late George Turnbull and Wilhelmina Turnbull (latterly Wright). Step daughter of Andrew Wright of The Galla, Dalbeattie.
Died 29 October 1918 of influenza at Perth Royal Infirmary. Buried in Dalbeattie Cemetery. Also remembered on the Memorial in Perth Congregational Church.

PTE. GORDON WYKES, RSF.
Gordon Wykes, Private (35130) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 29. Enlisted February 1916.
Born 1888 at Dalbeattie. Son of George and Barbara (Kingstree) Wykes.
Missing in Action 26 September 1917. Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France and on the Memorial at St. Peter's RC Church in Dalbeattie.

STOKER. ALEXANDER YOUNG, RN.
Alexander McNeil Young, Stoker 1st Class (295195) HMS Vindictive, Royal Navy. Age 39. First period of service with RN from April 1900 to April 1909. Re-enlisted April 1912 with Royal Fleet Reserve, Portsmouth. Joined HMS Vindictive August 1914.
Born 1876 at Ayr. Son of Mr. & Mrs. Young. Husband of Kate Young of Southsea, Portsmouth.
Died at Sea 11 November 1915 of septicaemia - off the coast of South America. Remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial and on the Borgue War Memorial.

GUNNER. ALEX. J L MATTHEWSON, RFA.
Not listed by CWGC
Alexander James LLewelyn Matthewson, Gunner (224635) Royal Field Artillery. Age 22.
Born 1897 at Rhayader, Radnorshire, Wales. Son of James and Elizabeth (McKie) Matthewson of Alpine St. Dalbeattie.
Died 11 October 1919 of TB at Bermondsey Military Hospital, Ladywell, Lewisham, London. Believed to be buried in Dalbeattie Cemetery.

Alexander's father, James, was a well known local man who rose from a quarryman to Quarry Manager in Cornwall and Inspector of Works on several major projects at home and abroad. At the time of Alexander's birth, James was the Inspector of Works, Dam Construction on the Elan Valley Project in North Wales for Birmingham Corporation Waterworks.

Gunner Matthewson MAY be a "non-com" but the evidence is incomplete.
Jim Grant - "Kinnethmont" - has this case.

John Hamilton Barr, Flight Sergeant (1366045) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 32.
Born 1911 at Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. Husband of Anne McDiarmid Barr of Kirkbean, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Missing in Action 29 September 1943. Remembered on the Runnymede Memorial, Windsor and on the Colvend WW2 Memorial.
Lost while on anti-submarine patrol in the Western Approaches/Bay of Biscay on board a Wellington of 172 Squadron, RAF Coastal Command.

CPL. WILLIAM BLAIR, LON.SCOT.
William Blair, Corporal (3134084) 1st Battalion (The London Scottish) Gordon Highlanders. Age 29.
Born 1915 at Dalbeattie. Son of Robert Blair.
Missing in Action 12 January 1944. Remembered on the Cassino Memorial, Italy.

FLY.OFF. DONALD C BIGGAR, RAFVR.
Donald Charlton Biggar, Flying Officer (W.Op) (159528) 171 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 24.
Born 1921 at ? Son of William Thomson Biggar and Winifred Mary Biggar of Dalbeattie.
Killed in Action 7 March 1945. Buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Germany.
Using Halifax aircraft, 171 Squadron's role in 100 Group was to drop "window" in an attempt to jam German radar.

SGT.PLT. JOHN J CARSWELL, RAF.
John Jackson Carswell, Sergeant (Pilot) (1568844) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 22.
Born 1923 at Dalbeattie. Son of John Whitfield Carswell and Roberta Haxton Carswell of Dalbeattie.
Died 28 April 1945. Buried in Fayid War Cemetery, Ismailia, Egypt.

Born 1924 at Glasgow.
Killed in Action 15 April 1945. Buried in Hanover War Cemetery, Germany.

GNR. FRANK CLARK, RA.
Francis Clark, Gunner (1427010) 3 Battery, 1 Searchlight Regiment, Royal Artillery. Age 24.
Born 1915 at Dalbeattie. Son of Felix and Catherine Clark.
Killed in Action 28 May 1940. Buried in Dunkirk Town Cemetery, France. Also remembered on the Memorial at St. Peter's RC Church in Dalbeattie.
The regiment went to France in January 1940. The evacuation from the Dunkirk Beaches began on 27 May.

SGT. HUGH CAMPBELL, LAARA.
Hugh Campbell MA (Edinburgh), Sergeant (934900) 223 Battery, 32 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery.
Born 1918 at Dalbeattie. Son of George and Agnes R Campbell.
Killed in Action 30 December 1941. Buried in Pembroke Military Cemetery, Malta.

William Robert Forteath, Leading Seaman (D/JX 239132) HMS Laforay, Royal Navy. Age 22.
Born 1921 at Dalbeattie. Son of William and Wihelmina (Plunkett) Forteath.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea 30 March 1944. Remembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
HMS Laforey, an "L" class destroyer, was sunk by torpedoes from U223 after depth charging forced the submarine to the surface. Only 65 of the ship's company survived.

FUS. THOMAS GRACIE, RSF.
Thomas Gracie, Fusilier (14633516) 6th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 19.
Born 1925 at Dalbeattie. Son of James and Jeanie Gracie.
Killed in Action 26 June 1944. Buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, Normandy, France.
In its first action after landing on 13 June, in an attack on the village of St. Mauvieu, the Battalion lost 25% of its fighting strength with some 40 killed and over 120 wounded.

PTE. WILLIAM HENDERSON, KOSB AIR.
William Henderson, Private (14327562) 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. 1st Airlanding Brigade. Age 20.
Born 1924 at Dalbeattie. Son of James and Agnes Henderson.
Killed in Action 25/26 September 1944. Buried in Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Holland.
Having landed on the first day of the battle, Sunday 17 September, by the 25th the battalion were defending the perimeter near Oosterbeek Hoog Railway Station and that night began the withdrawal back across the Rhine.

Carol Reuben Kean, Boy Telegraphist (D/JX 170171) HMS Galatea, Royal Navy. Age 17.
Born 1924 at Dalbeattie. Son of William and Ethel (Golding) Kean.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea 15 December 1941. Remembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
The cruiser HMS Galatea was torpedoed by U557 and sank 30 miles NW of Alexandria, Egypt.

LCPL GEORGE MARR, CMP.
George Marr, Lance Corporal (3191062) Corps of Military Police. Age 22.
Born 1920 at Dalbeattie. Son of George and Janet Marr.
Accidentally Killed 8 March 1943. Buried in Dalbeattie Cemetery.
The Gravestone was provided by officers and men of the Guards Armoured Division.

PTE. THOMAS McADAM, DLI.
Thomas McAdam, Private (3191189) 2nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Age 24.
Born 1918 at Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 14 November 1942. Remembered on the Alemein Memorial, Egypt and on the Memorial at St. Peter's RC Church in Dalbeattie.

PTE. ROBERT I McCONNELL, SEAFORTHS.
Not listed by CWGC.
Two members of Dalbeattie RBL (aged 85 and 91) remember Robert as an orphan brought up by a Nobbie Clark of High St. Dalbeattie but they have no knowledge about the circumstances of his death.

David Herron McCormick, Stoker 1st Class (C/KX 115043) HMS Warspite, Royal Navy. Age 21.
Born 1922 at Dalbeattie. Son of Hugh Lachlan McCormick and Barbara (Herron) McCormick.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea 16 September 1943. Remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
The battleship HMS Warspite was hit and severely damaged by a radio controlled glider bomb whilst bombarding inland of the Salerno beachhead.

PTE. ALEXR. McCREADIE, KOSB.
Alexander McCreadie, Private (3189142) 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 26.
Born 1918 at Glasgow. Son of William and Jessie McCreadie. Husband of Elizabeth McCreadie of Dalbeattie.
Killed in Action 18 February 1945. Buried in Mook War Cemetery, Holland.

SGT. WILLIAM J McCALL, RAMC.
William John McCall, Corporal (7373396) Royal Army Medical Corps. Age 27.
Born 1918 at Muckairn, Argyllshire. Husband of G. McCall of Dalbeattie.
Died 18 December 1945. Buried in Karachi War Cemetery, Pakistan.

Born ? at Glasgow (SNWM)
Died 13 July 1940. Buried in Dalbeattie Cemetery.

CPL. DAVID McMINN, ROY.SCOTS.
David John Denniston McMinn, Corporal (3049684) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots. Age 36.
Born at Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Sarah McMinn. Husband of Mary Brown McMinn of Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 3 April 1943. Remembered on the Rangoon Memorial, Burma.
On 3 April, in the Arakan region of NW Burma, Japanese troops attacked the exposed left flank of the 14th Indian Division where the 1st Royal Scots were in support and overran several units.

PTE. JOSEPH PERE, KOSB.
Joseph Caven Pere, Private (3191028) 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers, 1st Airlanding Brigade. Age 24.
Born 1920 at Dalbeattie. Son of Mark and Isabella Pere.
Killed in Action/Died of Wounds? 28 September 1944. Buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Germany.
The battle of Arnhem was fought 17-26 September. The majority of identified casualties are buried in Oosterbeek Cemetery, Arnhem. Possibly Joseph Pere died of wounds as a POW?

RFLM. ANDREW RICHARDSON, SCOT.RFL.
Andrew Richardson, Rifleman (3254561) 6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Age 24.
Born 1920 at Dalbeattie.
Killed in Action 6 November 1944. Buried in Schoonselhof Cemetery, Antwerp, Belgium.
The 6th Cameronians (52nd Div) fought with the 1st Canadian Army during the Battle of the Scheldt - 2 October to 8 November.

John Philip Slingsby, Private (1769307) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 23.
Born 1920 at Dalbeattie. Son of John and D Slingsby.
Missing in Action 19 January 1944. Remembered on the Rangoon Memorial, Burma.
In January 1944 the 7th Indian Infantry Division re-entered Burma to begin the eventual defeat of the Japanese Army.

PTE. MARSHALL B SMITH, PAR.BRGD.
Marshall Barrie Smith, Private (14363561) 13th Battalion (2/4th The South Lancashire Regiment), Parachute Regiment, Army Air Corps. Age 31.
Born 1913 at Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire. Son of Edgar T F and Jane Barrie Smith. Husband of Jean C Smith of Dalbeattie.
Killed in Action 24 March 1945. Buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Germany.
24 March was the first day of Operation Varsity, the landing of airborne troops across the Rhine into Germany.

FLT.SGT. JAMES STRETTON, RAF.
James Horby Stretton, Sergeant (Flight Engineer) (949546) 101 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Born 1920 at Dalbeattie. Son of James Horby Stretton and Harriet Handley (McAllan) Stretton. Husband of Clara (Pimlott) Stretton of Radcliffe, Lancashire.
Killed in Action 5 May 1943 when his Lancaster crashed on landing at Scorton Airfield near Richmond, Yorkshire. Buried in Dalbeattie Cemetery.
Also remembered on the Park Church Memorial now in Dalbeattie Parish Church.

SPR. JOHN STEEL, RE.
John Watson Steel, Sapper (14748416) 294 Field Company, Royal Engineers. Age 19.
Son of Matthew and Robina M Steel of Dalbeattie.
Killed in Action 13 April 1945. Buried in Uden War Cemetery, Holland.
Also remembered on the Park Church Memorial now in Dalbeattie Parish Church.

The only Corporal Thomson of the Reconnaissance Corps listed by CWGC and SNWM is:
Thomas Thomson, Corporal (3188899) 52nd Regiment, Reconnaissance Corps, Royal Armoured Corps. Born Kirkcudbrightshire. Age 25.

Thought to be:
Samuel McNairn Thomson - Born 1919 at Dalbeattie.

Killed in Action 19 February 1945. Buried in Milsbeek War Cemetery, Holland. Also remembered (as Samuel) on the Memorial at St. Peter's RC Church in Dalbeattie.

Joseph Wykes, Sergeant (Air Gunner) (1127228) 75 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Age 22.
Born 1920 at Dalbeattie. Son of Joseph K and Elizabeth (Craig) Wykes. Husband of Florence N (Boyle) Wykes of Welwyn, Hertfordshire.
Killed in Action 13 May 1943 when his Stirling crashed after an engine failure during take-off from Newmarket for a raid on Duisberg. Buried in Dalbeattie Cemetery. Also remembered on the Memorial at St. Peter's RC Church in Dalbeattie.
