Alexander Muirhead, Company Sergeant Major (9420) "D" Company, 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 36. Enlisted 1905. Served in Egypt and India. Twice wounded and died of wounds.
Born 1883 at Dalbeattie.
Died of Wounds 17 April 1918. Buried in Arneke British Cemetery, France.

PTE. WILLIAM MURRAY, KOSB.
William Murray, Private (241651) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottsih Borderers. Age 33. Fell in action at Gaza.
Born 1883 at Loch House, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James and Agnes (Johnstone) Murray.
Missing in Action 19 April 1917. Remembered on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel and on the Colvend War Memorial.

John McAdam, Private (130362) 51st Battalion, Machine Gun Corps. Age 28. Formerly (48235) Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Born 1890 at Creetown, Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of John and Maggie McAdam of Southwick Rd. Dalbeattie.
Died of Wounds 21 July 1918. Buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

William McAdam, Lance Sergeant (10064) 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. Age 26. Enlisted 1906 serving 6 years in India.
Born 1888 at Dalbeattie. Son of William and Walburga McAdam of Maxwell St. Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 9 May 1915. Remembered on the Le Touret Memorial, France and on the War Memorial in Buittle Church.

SGT. WILLIAM McCAA, RFA.
William McCaa, Staff Sergeant (143902) 527th Heavy Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Age 32. Mobilised August 1914 in the Ayrshire Yeomanry. Transferred to RFA. Served at Gallipoli and Mesopotamia. Died at Sea.
Born 1885 at Old Cumnock, Ayrshire. Husband of Thomasina McCaa of Burn St. Dalbeattie.
Died at Sea 11 January 1918. Remembered on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
The Hospital Ship Erinpura sailed from Basra for Bombay on 9 January 1918.

DR. CHARLES McCAIG, RFA.
Charles McCaig, Gunner (192653) "A" Battery, 58th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Age 29.
Born 1888 at Dalbeattie. Son of Crawford and Elizabeth (Morley) McCaig of William st. Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 13 October 1917. Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Born 1889 at Irongray, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Samuel and Agnes (Cook) McCaig of Alpine St. Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 3 September 1916. Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

PTE. JAMES C McDILL, KOSB.
James Coupland McDill, Private (23322) 3rd Reserve Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Latterly (19263) Seaforth Highlanders, then (7648) 13th Company, Labour Corps. Age 21. Enlisted March 1916.
Born 1897 at Lochrutton, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Mrs. J. Rodie of Maxwell St. Dalbeattie.
Killed in Action 9 January 1918. Buried at Duhallow Advanced Dressing Station Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
The cemetery contains the graves of 41 men of the 13th Company, Labour Corps killed when a German aircraft dropped a bomb on an ammunition truck in January 1918.

SGT. ROBERT McDONALD, KOSB.
Robert McDonald, Sergeant (1100) King's own Scottish Borderers. Age 27.
Enlisted in 1/5th KOSB. Served at the Dardanelles. Invalided to UK and died in a London hospital.
Born 1888 at Dalbeattie. Son of Donald and Grace (Stewart) McDonald.
Died 24 October 1915. Buried in Stoneykirk Parish Churchyard, Wigtownshire.

Thomas McGhie, Private (40591) 6th/7th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 33. Enlisted July 1916 in 3rd KOSB before transferring to 2nd RSF.
Born 1884 at Dalbeattie. Son of Alexander and Isabella (Milley) McGhie.
Killed in Action 22 August 1917. Buried in Aeroplane Cemetery, Ypres, France.

PTE. MATTHEW McGOWAN, KOSB.
Matthew McGowan, Private (8554) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 23. Enlisted April 1915.
Born 1892 at High St. Kirkcudbright. Son of Thomas and Agnes (Fox) McGowan.
Missing in Action 4 June 1915. Remembered on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey and on the Memorial at St. Peter's RC Church in Dalbeattie.

Sgt.Maj. JOHN MCGUFFOG, IRISH BR. Gds.
Listed by CWGC as William John Johnstone.
John McGuffog, also known as William John Johnstone, Sergeant (1081) 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards. Age 27.
Born 1887 at Southwick Rd. Dalbeattie. Son of David and Mary Anne (Burnie) McGuffog. Husband of Florence Hilda (Simmonds) Johnstone of Fenwick St. Woolwich, London.
Enlisted July 1904 as Private (9698) in the Highland Light Infantry but by February 1906 was listed as a deserter. The same month he enlisted, as William John Johnstone, in the Dragoon Guards at Whitehaven, Cumberland. In June 1910 he confessed to being a deserter and was given a King's pardon. Promoted to Sergeant in June 1914.
He married Florence Hilda Simmonds, as William John McGuffog Johnstone, in 1912 at Woolwich, London.
He was reported killed in action and buried near Neuve Chapelle.
Killed in action 28 October 1914. Remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Born 1891 at Palnakie, Buittle, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of William and Elizabeth (Handley) McHenry. Grandson of Mr. & Mrs. Handley of Haugh of Urr. Employed by Mr. Gowan of Dalbeattie. Killed by a shell alongside his friend Robert Swanston.
Killed in Action 9 December 1915. Buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Turkey. Also remembered on the Haugh of Urr War Memorial.

PTE. ANDREW McKIE, KOSB.
Andrew Oliver McKie, Private (22947) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 28.
Born 1889 at Patna, Ayrshire. Son of Mrs. C McGuffie (sic) of Port St. Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 3 May 1917. Remembered on the Arras Memorial, France.

William Reid McKay, Private (43660) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Born 1894 at Workington, Cumberland. Son of Michael and Martha McKay of Port St. Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 10 April 1917. Remembered on the Arras Memorial, France.
Although raised in Edinburgh some 550 men were recruited in Manchester and this "Pals" Battalion is often called the Manchester Scottish.

Killed in Action 14 September 1914. Buried at Vendresse British Cemetery, France.

SAPPER ROBERT McVINNIE, RE.

Born 1888 at Holywood, Dumfriesshire. Son of James and Agnes McVinnie of Kippford, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire. Husband of Jessie (Milligan) McVinnie of Dalbeattie.
Died 1919 at Stobhill Military Hospital, Glasgow. Buried in Dalbeattie Cemetery. Also remembered on the Colvend War Memorial.

Missing in Action 2 June 1915. Remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium and on the Southwick War Memorial.

Son of Peter and Mary McWhirter of Burn St. Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 14 December 1914. Remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium and on the Southwick War Memorial.

On 14 December the 1st Gordon Highlanders were ordered to attack a strongly wired position, up a hill and over mud a foot deep, at Maedelstede Farm. Of the 560 men who set off almost 260 were later listed as killed, wounded or missing.

CWGC and LAC spell the name as NELSON. The Stewartry Roll of Honour use both Neilson and Nelson with identical entries under each
Alexander Nelson, Private (A/40764 or 440764) 5th Battalion (Western Cavalry) Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment) Age 21. Enlisted January 1915 at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan 53rd Canadians. Transferred to 5th. Served at Armentieres and Ypres.
Born 1895 at Dalbeattie. Son of Mrs. Nelson of Hawthorne Place, Dalbeattie.
Killed in Action 2 June 1916. Buried in Larch Wood (Railway Cutting) Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.

PTE. JOHN T NELSON, ASC.
Possibly:
J. Nelson, Driver (T3/029621) 3rd Company, 23rd Divisional Train, Army Service Corps. Age 29.
Born 1888 at Dalbeattie? The 1901 census has a John Nelson aged 14 at 186 High St. Dalbeattie with father James and mother Mary.
CWGC shows - Son of James and Isabella Nelson of Nursery Avenue, Onchan, Douglas, Isle of Man.
Killed in Action 21 September 1917. Buried in Reninghelst New Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium.

Born 1894 at Meadowhead of Crocketford, Kirkpatrick Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Jessie Nichol.
Died 8 November 1917 of TB at the Consumption Sanatoria, Kilmacolm. (Usual address, Market St. Maxwelltown, Dumfries) Buried in Kilmacolm Cemetery, Renfrewshire.

Jessie Jane Paterson, Staff Nurse: Territorial Force Nursing Service. Age 34. Enlisted November 1914. Served in Macedonia and died at Vertekop. Formerly a Queen's Nurse at Darvel, Ayrshire and at No. 3 General Hospital, Stobhill, Glasgow.
Born 1882 at Dalbeattie. Daughter of James and Marion Isabella Ewart Paterson of Carignair St. Dalbeattie.
Died 29 September 1916 from dysentery. Buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece. Also remembered on the Scottish Nurses Memorial in St. Giles High Kirk, Edinburgh.
The 36th and 37th General Hospitals were based at Vertekop.


CPL. RUSSELL PEALLING, RS.
Russell Pealing, Corporal (18886) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots. Age 25. Enlisted December 1914.
Born 1891 at Dalbeattie. Son of James and Jane (Russell) Pealing of Dalbeattie and latterly of Leith.
Missing in Action 1 July 1916. Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

2.LIEUT. JAMES POOL, KRR.
James Williamson Pool, 2nd Lieutenant: 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) Age 20. Enlisted October 1914 1/5th KOSB and became Corporal (1289) Commisioned in the Cameronians and attached to the King's Royal Rifles. Served in Gallipoli and France. Twice wounded.
Born 1897 at Whitehill, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of James amd Jessie Pool of West Barcloy, Colvend.
Missing in Action 29 September 1917. Remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres, Belgium and on the Colvend War Memorial.

Born 1890 at Maxwelltown/Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Willliam and Elizabeth Proudfoot. The 1901 census shows the family at Hurlford, Ayrshire with three of their children born in Dalbeattie between 1894 and 1900.
Missing in Action 1 July 1916. Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

George Purdie, Private (51585) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots. Age 18. Enlisted August 1917.
Born 1899 at Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire. Brother of Mrs. William Davidson of Copland St. Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 25 April 1918. Remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

PTE. WILLIAM RAE, KOSB.
William Rae, Private (242746) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 29. Enlisted August 1914 1/5th KOSB. Transferred to 1st KOSB. Wounded at Armentieres and a POW from 11 to 20 April 1918. A Grocer and Wine/Spirit Merchant in Dalbeattie he was a pre-war territorial with "F" Company (Dalbeattie) but due to an accident did not proceed overseas with the original contingent and did not join his battalion until 1918. Born 1888 at Dalbeattie. Son of James and Mary Rae. Husband of Elizabeth Lidderdale Rae of Sunnyside Cottage, Dalbeattie.
Died of Wounds 20 April 1918. Buried in Leuze Communal Cemetery, Hainaut, Belgium. Also remembered on the War Memorial in Buittle Church.

Born 1894 at Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Mrs. A B R Hyslop (formerly Riddick) of Sunnyside, Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 4 June 1915. Remembered on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

SGT. ROBERT ROBERTSON, LIVERPOOLS.
Robert Robertson, Sergeant (57378) 18th (Lancashire Hussars) Battalion, The King's (Liverpool Regiment) Age 32. Enlisted in 3/1st Lowland Division, Army Cyclist Corps. Transferred to 18th Liverpool Regiment. A POW in Germany 23 - 27 April 1918 and reported to have died from wounds at Cugny, France.
Born 1886 at Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Robertson of Glenshalloch Place, Dalbeattie. Husband of Nichola (McCaig) Robertson of Alpine St. Dalbeattie.
Died of Wounds 27 April 1918. Buried in Cugny Military Cemetery. Reburied, post war, in Grand-Seracourt British Cemetery, France.

SGT. THOMAS ROBERTSON, HLI.
Thomas Robertson, Sergeant (331753) 1/9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Age 22. Enlisted August 1915.
Born 1895 at Dalbeattie. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Robertson of "Partick, Glasgow" (CWGC)
Missing in Action 25 September 1917. Remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

Although there appears a conflict of addresses (Glasgow/Dalbeattie) they are all listed on the Family Gravestone in Dalbeattie Cemetery (see SWGP)


PTE. DAVID SIBBALD, YORKS & LANCS.
David Sibbald, Private (19122) 2nd Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. Age 25. Enlisted October 1915.
Born 1891 at Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Nephew of Sarah Barrowman of Meilke Culloch, Dalbeattie.
Killed in Action 19 March 1917. Buried in Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay, France.

PTE. WALTER SLINGSBY, A&SH.
Walter Slingsby, Private (S/10423) 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Age 33.
Born 1883 at Dalbeattie. Son of Walter and Mary Slingsby of Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 13 October 1916. Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

PTE. NATHAN SLOAN, HLI.
Nathaniel Sloan, Private (32815) 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Age 33. Enlisted March 1916. Served in Mesopotamia. Died of fever in Basra Hospital.
Born 1884 at Dalbeattie. Son of Charles and Elizabeth (McCredie) Sloan.
Died 15 December 1917. Buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq.

PTE. WILLIAM SMITH, KOSB.
William Smith, Private (240452) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 22. Enlisted August 1914. Served in Gallipoli, Egypt and France. Wounded July 1918 and died of wounds.
Born 1896 at Kirkcudbright. Son of William and Susan (Cowan) Smith of John St. Dalbeattie.
Died of Wounds 3 August 1918. Buried in Senlis French National Cemetery, Oise, France.

The British 63rd Casualty Clearing Station was at Senlis for 12 days in August 1918.


PTE. WILLIAM SOLLEY, KOSB.
William Solley, Private (17480) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 25. Enlisted December 1914. Died of Wounds.
Born 1890 at Kelton, Dumfriesshire. Son of William and Miriam Clark Solley. Husband of Jane Solley of Burn St. Dalbeattie.
Died of Wounds 13 June 1915. Buried in East Mudros Military Cemetery, Lemnos, Greece.

Born 1895 at Dalbeattie. Son of John and Lizzie Stevenson of Blair St. Dalbeattie.
Died of Wounds 7 July 1915. Buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. Also remembered on the Colliston United Free Church Memorial now in Dalbeattie Parish Church.

PTE. W J STEWART, GORDONS.
William Johnstone Stewart, Private (S/12262) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Age 25.
Born 1891 at Glanruther Cottage, Bargrennan, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Charles and Elizabeth (Johnstone) Stewart.
Missing in Action 18 July 1916. Remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
