Born 1895 at Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of John Davidson and Janet (Rae) McIrvine.
Killed in Action 16 April 1918. Buried at Bus House Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
SGT. DAVID A F DICKSON, CANADIANS.
David Alexander Fraser Dickson, Sergeant (874202) 78th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment). Age 30. Enlisted February 1916 at Miniota, Manitoba.
Born 1887 at Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Son of William and Mrs. J J Dickson of Prestwick, Ayrshire.
Missing in Action 9 April 1917. Remembered on the Vimy Memorial, France.
STKR. THOMAS DOBIE, RN.
Thomas Dobie, Stoker (3240S) HMS Invincible, Royal Naval Reserve. Age 24. Enlisted August 1914 and took part in Battles of Heligoland Bight, Falkland Islands and Jutland.
Born 1892 at Dalbeattie. Son of John and Jane (Buchanan) Dobie of Maxwell St. Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 31 May 1916. Remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.
During the Battle of Jutland, the Invincible was hit and exploded - only seven crew survived. |

Michael Dolan, Private (240222) 1/4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 23.
Born 1895 at Govan, Glasgow. Son of Martin and Mary Dolan of Girvan, Ayrshire.
Missing in Action 19 April 1917. Remembered on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel and on the memorial at St. Peter's RC Church, Dalbeattie.
PTE. JOHN DOWDS, CANADIANS.
There is no Canadian named Dowds listed by CWGC.
Thought to be:
John Dowds, Private (48A) 11th Battalion, Australian Infantry, AIF. Age 21.
Enlisted January 1916 at Casula, New South Wales in the 19th Battalion 3 Division Cyclist Corps. Transferred to 11th Bn. in December 1916 in England. Wounded 8 January 1917 and died of wounds at 36th Casualty Clearing Station, Albert, France. His sister Mary Dowds of Dundas St. London, Ontario, Canada was listed as next-of-kin and brother James was selected to receive his medals.
Born 1895 at Glasgow. Son of John Dowds of Stevenson St. Calton, Glasgow and of the late Mary Ann Burnson Dowds. After his mother's death John was taken, with his sister and brother, into care in April 1899 and boarded out by the Parish of Glasgow. In 1901 John and James were living at 96 Copland St. Dalbeattie as "Boarders".
Died of Wounds 23 January 1917. Buried at Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, Albert, France and also remembered on the Memorial at St. Peter's RC Church in Dalbeattie.
PTE. JAMES DRAIN, BORDER REGIMENT.
James Drain, Private (6593) 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment. Age 37. Enlisted August 1914. Wounded 12 March 1915 at Neuve Chapelle.
Born 1878 in England. Son of James Drain of Barrhill, Dalbeattie.
Died of Wounds 29 March 1915 in Norfolk War Hospital. Buried in Norwich Cemetery, Norfolk.
PTE. JOSEPH FERGUSSON, SOUTH AFRICANS.
Joseph Fergusson, Private (3660) 8th Regiment (Transvaal Scottish) South African Infantry. Age 41.
Born 1877 at Springholm, Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Samuel and Catherine (Gordon) Fergusson.
Died 5 March 1917 in hospital in Pretoria from a fever contracted while on service in German East Africa. Buried in Pretoria (Rebecca Street) Cemetery, South Africa.

John Alexander Fortune, Private (42464) 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Age 21.
Born 1898 at Stair, Ayrshire. Lived with his uncle John Glencross at Alpine St. Dalbeattie.
Died 1 March 1919. Buried at Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany and remembered on the memorial at St. Peter's RC Church in Dalbeattie.
1 Bn. Lancs Fusiliers was one of the battalions selected to occupy the Rhine bridgehead. They crossed the Belgian border on 4 December 1918 and arrived in Cologne five days later.
PTE. JAMES C FRAZER, LIVERPOOLS.
James Craig Frazer, Private (3272) 1/10th Battalion (Liverpool Scottish) The King's Liverpool Regiment. Age 21. Enlisted September 1914.
Born 1893 at Glensone, Southwick, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of T W and Jessie J Frazer of Upper Parliament St. Liverpool.
Killed in Action 4 February 1915. Buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Belgium. Also remembered on Southwick War Memorial. |

Charles McAlpine Gallacher, Private (42665) 14th Company, Machine Gun Corps. Age 18. Formerly (2159) 1/5th Bn. KOSB. Killed while attached to MG section of 1st Bn. Dorsetshire Regiment.
Born 1899 at Dalbeattie. Son of Peter Gallacher of High St. Dalbeattie and of Mary McAlpine.
Killed in Action 13 July 1917. Buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.
SGT. THOMAS GALLAGHER, SCOTS FUS.
Thomas Gallacher, Sergeant (12581) 7th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age ?. Enlisted September 1914 from Little Milton Farm, Springholm, Urr. Had three brothers serving; Francis 2nd Bn. KOSB, Peter RFA and Charles 1/5th KOSB.
Missing in Action 26 September 1915. Remembered on the Loos Memorial, France.
Both brothers are also remembered on the Haugh of Urr War Memorial.

Born 1886 as William Henry Howe at St Andrew's, Edinburgh. Son of George Howe and Margaret (Hyslop) Howe, who later married George Jamieson. In 1901 George and Margaret Jamieson lived at High St. Dalbeattie with their sons George, Ogilvie (see 1st entry on Panel 3) and Hugh; and with William Howe.
Died 30 January 1916 on acute appendicitis in Craigleith Military Hospital. Buried in Edinburgh (Seafield) Cemetery, Leith. |

In 1901 the family were living at High St. Dalbeattie.
Died (of Wounds?) 11 November 1916 of mastoiditis and scepticaemia at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Buried at Edinburgh (Seafield) Cemetery, Leith.

Born 1883 at Henbury, Wimborne, Dorset. Son of Captain Alexander Clark-Kennedy and The Hon. Lettice Lucy Clark-Kennedy of Knockgray, Carsphairn, Galloway.

Missing in Action 4 October 1917. Remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Francis Lee, Private (12461) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Age 24.
Born 1891 at Maryhill, Glasgow. In 1901 living with Mary Stewart of Port St. Dalbeattie, age 10, and with his sister Catherine and brother James, all as "boarders".
Killed in Action 27 November 1915. Buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France and remembered on the War Memorial in St. Peter's RC Church in Dalbeattie.
Thought to be some of the children from the Glasgow area placed with families in Dalbeattie.

Born 1888 at Dalbeattie. Son of John William and Mary Jane (Murphy) Mansfield.
Killed in Action (died of wounds?) 23 April 1915. Buried in Larch Wood (Railway Cutting) Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
CPT. SAM W MARKHAM, MER.MAR.
Samuel Wilson Markham, Mate: S.S. Bellorado, Mercantile Marine. Age 47.
Born 1870 at Barnbarroch, Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire. Son of Charles and Margaret Markham of Dalbeattie.
Killed in Action 27 February 1917. Buried in Malta (Capuccini) Naval Cemetery. Also remembered on the Colliston United Free Church Memorial (now in Dalbeattie Parish Church)
The SS Bellorado was shelled and damaged by U-boat UC22 when sailing from Barry, South Wales to Alexandria. 3 members of the crew were killed.

Sydney Marriott, Private (29333) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 25.
Born 1894 at Dalbeattie. Son of Edward and Margaret (McConnell) Marriott. Husband of Janet McKie Marriott of Shakespeare St. Dumfries.
Missing in Action 27 March 1918. Remembered on the Pozieres Memorial, Albert, France.

PTE. JAMES MAXWELL, BLACK WATCH.
James Maxwell, Private (S/9226) 9th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) Age 20. Enlisted August 1914. Wounded October 1916 at the Somme.
Born 1893 at Alloa, Clackmananshire. Foster son of Mrs H Gilmour of Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 26 April 1917. Remembered on the Arras Memorial, France.
2.LT. JOHN MAXWELL, ROYAL SCOTS FUS.
John Maxwell, Second Lieutenant 1/5th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Age 26.
Born 1889 at Terraughtie House, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Son of William Jardine Herries Maxwell and Dorothea Fitzgerald Herries Maxwell of Munches, Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 12 July 1915. Remembered on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey and, with his brother William (see below), on the War Memorial in Buittle Church.
PTE. SAMUEL MAXWELL, KOSB.
Samuel Dickson Maxwell, Private (22770) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 27.
Born 1891 at High St. Dalbeattie. Son of John and Janet Maxwell of Colvend.
Missing in Action 3 May 1917. Remembered on the Arras Memorial, France and on the Colvend War Memorial.
CPT. WILLIAM J MAXWELL, CAMERONS.
William Jardine Maxwell, Captain: Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders attached to 10th Soudanese Regiment, Egyptian Army. Age 34. Commissioned 2Lt. September 1904. Served in South Africa, China, India and Egypt.
Born 1882 at Terraughtie House, Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire. Brother of John - see parent details above.
Died 26 August 1916 at Abiad, Darfur, Sudan. Buried in Khartoum War Cemetery, Sudan.
The Darfur Field Force entered Abiad on 9 April 1916. _________________ Ken |

Alexander Richardson Millburn, Sapper (502324) 2nd Field Company, Canadian Engineers. (Surname as per CWGC and LAC) Age 41. Enlisted January 1916 at Montreal.
Born 1875 at Dalbeattie - as Millburne. Son of William and Sarah Millburne. Husband of Mary Ann Millburn of Iberville, Quebec.
Missing in Action 15 August 1917. Remembered on the Vimy Memorial, France.
PTE. WILLIAM MILBURN, CANADIANS.
William Glendenning Milburn, Private (643275) 75th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Ontario Regiment) (surname as per CWGC and LAC) Age 21. Enlisted December 1915 at Barrie, Ontario.
Born 1897 at Southwick Rd. Dalbeattie - as Milbourne. Son of Mary Agnes Milbourne. Husband of Florence B Milburn of Barrie, Ontario.
Killed in Action 16 August 1917. Buried in Lievin Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
LCPL. JAMES A MILLAR, A&SH.
James A Miller, Lance Corporal (S/16434) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Age 38. Enlisted June 1916. Previously served throughout the South African War.
Born 1879 at Glasgow. Husband of the late Mary Brown Owen Miller.
Missing in Action 23 April 1917. Remembered on the Arras Memorial, France. |

CPL. WILLIAM MILROY, MM KOSB.
William Milroy, Military Medal, Corporal (240249) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers. Age 23. Mobilised August 1914. Served at Gallipoli, Palestine and France. Twice wounded near Gaza.
Born 1894 at Dalbeattie. Son of William and Agnes Jemima (McCrachen) Milroy of Sunnyside, Dalbeattie.
Missing in Action 1 August 1918. Remembered on the Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France.
PTE. WILLIAM MONAGHAN, KOSB.
William Monaghan, Private (1626) 1/5th Battalion (Dumfries and Galloway) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born ? at Barrhead, Glasgow. A Mrs. Kingstrie of Southwick Rd. Dalbeattie was advised that William was officially Missing.
Missing in Action 12 July 1915. Remembered on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey and on the memorial at St. Peter's RC Church in Dalbeattie.
SEAm. JOHN MORRISON, RN RES.
John Morrison, Deck Hand (2218SD) HMS Vivid. (Royal Naval Barracks) Age 47. Joined a minesweeper in 1915.
Born 1869 at Dalbeattie. Son of John Morrison (Blacksmith) of High St. Dalbeattie.
Died 26 May 1916 in hospital at Devonport. Buried in Ford Park Cemetery (formerly Plymouth Old Cemetery) |
