WREN HELEN A. McQUAKER, WRNS.
Helen Adair McQuaker, Wren (78304) HMS Cochrane II, Women's Royal Naval Service. Age 19.
Born 1926 at Dumfries. Daughter of James Adair McQuaker and Janet Moffat (Davidson) McQuaker of Douganhill, Palnackie, Buittle.
Died at home on 31 December 1945 of Tuberculosis and buried in Buittle Cemetery (CWG)
CAPT. DAVID SHAW MAXWELL, RA.
David Shaw Maxwell, Captain (95112) 64 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. Age 23.
Born 1920 in India. Son of Major-General Aymer Maxwell, CBE, MC and Isobel Frances Hawthorn (Shaw) Maxwell of Kirkennan, Buittle.
Killed in Action on 10 September 1943 and buried in Salerno War Cemetery, Italy.
PLT. OFFR. LORENZO D. COUPLAND, RAF.
Lorenzo Diaz Coupland, Pilot Officer (49802) Royal Air Force. Age 22.
Born 22 February 1920 in Tierra del Fuego, Chile. Son of Robert and Jane Coupland of Boghall, Buittle, Castle Douglas.
Died on Service on 3 November 1942 in a mid-air collision during training in Alabama under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, and buried in Montgomery (Oakwood) Cemetery Annex, Alabama, USA.
CAPT. WILLIAM CANDLISH BRYDSON, MN.
William Candlish Brydson, Master: MV Silver Maple (London) Merchant Navy. Age 38.
Born 1905 at Buittle. Son of James and Helen (Black) Brydson. Husband of Mildred Jean (Burchall) Brydson of West Derby, Liverpool who he married in 1942 in Liverpool.
(Brother of George Brydson who was killed in 1918 and who is listed on the Buittle WW1 Memorial)
Died of Wounds on 27 February 1944 and buried in Takoradi European Public Cemetery, Ghana.
On 26 Feb. 1944, the German submarine U-66 attacked the convoy STL-12 about 130 miles west of Takoradi. The only ship hit and sunk was the Silver Maple. The Master, five crew and a gunner were lost (U-boat.net) |
