In Dumfries and Galloway Standard of 8th July 1857

A freestone obelisk, some twenty or thirty feet high, with panellings of polished granite for the reception of inscriptions, is about to be erected in the Dean Cemetery, by the Officers and Men of the 79th Highlanders, in memory of their gallant companions in arms who died in the Crimea.

Lt.-Col. Hon. Lauderdale Maule-Ramsay was born on 27 March 1807.
He was the son of William Maule-Ramsay, 1st Lord Panmure and Patricia Heron Gordon.
He died on 1 August 1854 at age 47 at Varna, Bulgaria, while on active service, unmarried.
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Forfar in 1852.
He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the 79th Highlanders. He fought in the Crimean War.

Lt Col. Lauderdale Maule was the man responsible for introducing Glengarries to the 79th and it was later adopted by all Scottish regiments and for a period in the 1870s-1880s by all British Army units.

He was also responsible for introducing green doublets for pipers. He had hoped to make the 79th a rifle regiment and clothed his pipers in that uniform first, since he could do that at the colonel's discretion, but he wasn't able to persuade the War Office to let him clothe the rest of his regiment in green.

It was later adopted by other regiments and is now standard across the world as a piper's jacket colour although some follow the Scots Guards pattern of dark blue.
