From The Scotsman Thursday 25th December 1919.

    WAR MEMORIAL FOR MAXWELLTOWN

The burgh of Maxwelltown has decided to erect at a cost of £700 a memorial to the fallen service men of the district. The base of the memorial will be an obelisk of grey granite, on which will be erected the figure of a King's Own Scottish Borderer, in a falling attitude, with outstretched arms, forming a cross.

£700 was money well spent for a memorial of this quality when you consider what was being spent elsewhere on the "mass produced" statues.

When I was standing next to this memorial the other day I noticed that it is coated with some sort of matt brown paint. I think it is bronze underneath (both the statue and the 2 panels).

It seems to have been a few years ago at least - I have known this memorial for 5 years and it has always been brown but I never really noticed before. I took a few close up shots which show the verdigris underneath.

It seems a shame to cover up beutiful bronze patina and age like this.

Anyone have any information or thoughts?

Dornoch War Memorial was painted a few years ago. It was given a gloss rather than matt finish. Jim McGinlay identified it as a polyeurethane wet-look paint.

It seems to be a cheap way of refurbishing a bronze statue. Luckily Dornoch was refurbished more recently to its original glory.

I wish they'd do something with Canonbie as the extreme weathering, although very atmospheric, means that the figure is actually in danger of breaking down.

Thanks for the heads-up. I have reported this to the War Memorials Trust so hopefully they will look in to it.

Back to this memorial - I have submitted a condition report to the War Memorials Trust to highlight the brown paint though I fear it may prove too expensive to remove in the curent financial..........blah, blah, blah

The Maxwelltown memorial is one of the memorials featured in Derek Boorman's book ' A century of Remembrance - One hundred outstanding British War Memorials.' It also features on the front cover of 'At the Going down of the Sun: British First World War Memorials' by the same author.
