Hi All
My talk is on the 15th October at 19.30 at the Augustine Church Hall on George IV Bridge Edinburgh, its on the same side of the street as the National Library and you can park in Chambers Street opposite the National Museum of Scotland. The Greyfriars Pub does decent Bar Meals and is about 5 minutes walk away

Regards
Ken

Have they missed a name from this memorial?

If you search on the SNWM database for 22/05/1915 it gives 271 names. Most of them are 7th Royal Scots. It includes this chap:

Surname GARRIE
Firstname George
Service Number 1328
Date Death 22/05/1915
Decoration
Place of birth Leith
Other 7th Bn.
SNWM roll THE ROYAL SCOTS (LOTHIAN REGIMENT)
Rank Pte
Theatre of death Home.

If you look him up in the CWGC database it gives these details:

Name: GARRIE
Initials: G
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots
Unit Text: 7th Bn.
Age: 20
Date of Death: 22/05/1915
Service No: 1328
Additional information: Son of David and Ann Garrie, of 30, Thorntree St., Leith, Edinburgh. Born at Leith, Edinburgh.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Cemetery: EDINBURGH (ROSEBANK) CEMETERY

He's not got a seperate grave reference which means he's buried in the mass grave going by other entries for 7th Royal Scots who died on 22/05/1915 but I can't find his name listed on the memorial.

Regards

Adam

I've followed with interest the development of this thread. I know mistakes are made, especially in the maelstrom and confusion of the various Fronts.
However it seems very strange that George Garrie is missing from this memorial.

Just to let anyone know who's following this thread, I've now posted a photo of the Quintinshill Rail Disaster Plaque situated in Larbert Railway Station. Unfortunately there are no names on the plaque.

Hi Adam
Sorry for delay in replying I was in Nairn on holiday. I can confirm George Garrie should be on the memorial at Rosebank
his death certficate was No174 (Gretna District)registered by the battalion adjutant on 23rd November 1915 his was one of 13 soldiers deaths registered on that date. As he has a Scottish death certificate it would indicate he died in the train crash and not in hospital

He was aged 20 a shoemaker by occupation residing at 30 Thorntree Street Leith, son of David Garrie Cabinetmaker and Ann Garrie ms Findlay

why he was missed off I don't know perhaps his relatives objected

Regards
Ken

I came across a booklet in the library 'A Handful of Dust' by William Cross. It has 8 pages on the disaster including a full nominal roll. It would be a breach of copyright to put it all here but if anyone would like the scans, just PM me.

I contacted the CWGC yesterday about Private George Garrie's lack of grave marker.

I got a reply back today. They were aware of the ommission and have plans to erect a headstone in the cemetery in the near future.

Many thanks to Andrew Grant for supplying the following photograph of Private Garrie's new marker stone. It's the stone on the right.

Here is the same spot a couple of years ago

Re: the above photo of the plaque at the entrance of Rosebank Cemetery. They have the year wrong, it should be 1915 not 1916.

One of the crosses (the far left one) has come adrift of the wall and fallen forwards. It's unbroken, though. CWGC and Edinburgh Council have been notified and its re-erection is planned.
