Hi,

I've been carrying out some further research into the Pryde brothers from Kilrenny and found out they are on the Waid Academy Roll of Honour.

I've made contact with the school librarian so I'm going to try and arrange a visit.

"Thank you for your enquiry. We have been taking First World War Battlefields tours almost every year for the last 17 years and for the 10 years before that I took them from my previous schools. There has not been a pupil who has not been moved by the experience. This year we again laid a wreath at the Menin Gate Last Post ceremony in Ypres to the memory of those who fell and have no known grave in the Ypres Salient. Only 2 of our pupils each year are given the opportunity to go to Auschwitz as part of a government funded programme. Again the effect on the pupils is immense and we are lucky in that they share that with the whole school through assemblies.

We do have a war memorial in our Assembly Hall, in fact 2, which have been researched by a member of the local community who has written a book on those in the local area who have given their lives. His book is entitled 'Democracy of war' and the authors name is Kevin Dunion. There is also a website at www.democracyofwar.org.uk which has details of the information on the other memorials in the Anstruther and Cellardyke area."

I had finally been able to arange a day off tomorrow to go and see the Roll of Honour for myself.

You seem to have pre-empted my visit.

Hi,

I had an enjoyable visit to the school and met with the librarian who was very helpfull.

After our chat and looking at the two memorial boards I have decided to produce a Roll of Honour for Waid Academy.

I'll keep you posted as to my progress.

Located in the CRAIL PARISH Churchyard is a family erected headstone to Lieutenant JOHN BUCHANAN PATTISON, Black Watch who died at his parents home in Crail ( 1 Tolbooth St) on 1 August 1924 aged only 27 years . From my research it would appear that in fact John B Pattison could be a casualty of war as he died of TB having contracted it 2 years and 10 months prior to his death . He had attended the Waid Academy before joining the Clydesdale Banking Corp at Anstruther and when he was 18 joined the Colours by joining the Machine Gun Corps (MMGS) serving in France from August 1915 . He was commissioned 2nd Lieut into the Black Watch and on 30 July1917 was wounded in the neck , leg and right heel when serving with the Trench Mortar Battery of the 7th Black Watch in France. He was appointed Lieutenant the following year and it may have been whilst serving on active duties he contracted the TB which he died of at home in Crail . This so far can not be proved
