Adam posted a list of memorials some with unknown locations on the Talking Scot site. Included in the list were

Roy Bridge. Location: Not Known
Spean Bridge. Location: Not Known

I have checked these out locally and it would appear there are no traditional war memorials in both villages. The only memorials in Spean Bridge are the Commando Memorial and, I believe, there is a plaque in Kilmonivaig Church also in Spean Bridge. There appears to be nothing in Roy Bridge.

If you need photos of the Commando Memorial I can get them easily enough.

If anyone knows any information to the contrary I will be happy to check out.

Regards
Hugh

Hugh,

Roy Bridge has a "Memorial Hall" sandwiched between the Post Office and Catholic Church.
Could there be a memorial in it?

I've checked Spean Bridge and the only other place a memorial can be is up the hill at the church?

Hugh

Thanks for the offer but the Commando memorial is already on the forum here: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=314.

Many small communities do not have traditional memorials ie. a cross or obelisk in a prominent position within the community. The plaque in Kilmonivaig Church may well be the community memorial for Spean Bridge.
This may be the same for Roy Bridge. Although there is nothing on the main street in public view the local war memorial may be in the church or memorial hall which Mark has mentioned.

If you are local to these areas perhaps you would be able to ask at the church in Spean Bridge and hall in Roy Bridge if they have war memorials?

Regards

Adam

I was very fortunate to bump into a key custodian for Kilmonivaig Church near Spean Bridge last week and was allowed inside.
There are 2 names plaques within the church for the 2 wars.
These plaques were thought to be a list of both Spean Bridge and nearby Roy Bridge men who fell.
BUT later I found a grave near Roy Bridge which lists the names of 3 Campbell brothers who died in the Great War: none of trhese names appears on the plaque at Kilmonivaig Church.
See:
http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?p=16143&mforum=scottishwargraves#16143

So a memorial for Roy Bridge may still be awaiting discovery?

Being located in the Established Kirk the plaques may well detail they are for the Parish of Kilmonivaig. Kilmonivaig includes the vilages of Roy Bridge and Spean Bridge.

There might be a memorial in the RC chapel which has the names of the Campbells on.

Jim,

There is a key holder to the RC Church at the end of the lane.
At the time I did not realise that the Campbell brothers were not on the Spean Bridge memorial.
