You are a very lucky man. The National Archives of Scotland have a copy of his will. Only 20% of the wills of Scots soldiers are available at the NAS to view. It may not hold much but it's probably worth a look. I'll try and get up there for you next week.
Reference: SC70/8/697/47
Title: Will of 6907 or 3/6907 Private Boyle or James Boyle, 1st Bn., Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), Cause of death: Unknown, Scottish National Red Cross Hospital, Glasgow, Theatre: France., 18 Apr 1917

Hello Adam,
I quite agree with your description, especially as it was thro' luck I found The Scottish War Memorials Project Forum.
I must emphasize, I am "Over the Moon" at the news of James, and can't find enough words to express my gratitude to you.
I look forward to the contents of James's will producing a good result.
Best Regards,
John. |

You're welcome, it can sometimes be difficult to seperate fact from fiction.
It was great to be able advise on Monday of the will's existance at the Archives. In case you have not seen a paybook will before an example is below. They are simple, but legal, the details were usually created by the author adapting examples on the opposite page of the Paybook.
I hope it provides the link you seek to your grandfather.

You'll have to wait a little bit longer I'm afraid. I went to the NAS today and checked James Boyle's will on the digital archive. I'm afraid it hasn't been digitized yet. I have requested that it is added to the online database and I will try again in a week or two.
Kind regards
