The local paper for East Fife, 'The Fife Herald', has run stories over the last two weeks (ie July 2008) of planning proposals by the Fife Council which would isolate the present town war-memorial on a roundabout, constructed to replace the present cross-roads in front of the
memorial. The area behind the memorial currently adjoins a large park full of flower beds, and in Summer full with children and families. Part of this will be sacrificed severing any direct, pedestrian access to the memorial. I will be writing to the appropriate authorities to object to this proposal. Other forum members may wish to add their voices. _________________ I am interested in the full contemporary recognition of current conflicts, (Afghanistan, Iraq, UN peacekeeping service etc.). |

Sounds about right considering the way other councils in Scotland are treating our memorials at the present time.
Borders Council are quoting Health & Safety law for the Gala memorial so perhaps we should do the same for this memorial as you'd have to take your life in your hands to get over the roundabout to it.

How do they propose the remembrance day service? - presumably they lay wreaths at the memorial?

Unbelievable - then again maybe not!
The council spent £75,000 in Feb 2008 upgrading memorial and site.
The local RBL was at unveiling and it would be good to hear their views. |

I saw that it had been upgraded and re-dedicated. Its a nice memorial and this plan is another shocker. |

Welcome to farcical Scotland.
By god, I was convinced the Gala saga was a complete farce but this is going to be up there with it - and cost more.
Has anyone an e-mail address for the Cupar cooncil jobsworths that we can bombard? _________________

Had another look at article in Feb when memorial "unveiled"
Various civic dignatories, clergy, community cllrs and RBL. Both following there and will contact them.
Provost - cllr.frances.melville@fife.gov.uk
iain.smith.msp@scottish.parliament.uk
There must be an alternative to what is proposed.
Thanks to Mrs Aase Goldsmith for photos of site at present

I have , I hope got the bottom of the press story, suggesting a new road works scheme that would have isolated the memorial. I have been assured by council officials that the story grew out of a computer modelling exercise to simulate various changes to the road lay-out. No 'real' proposals are in hand and both local MSP and MP have noted the sesnitivity of the issue. _________________ I am interested in the full contemporary recognition of current conflicts, (Afghanistan, Iraq, UN peacekeeping service etc.). |
