Thanks to Mrs Aase Goldsmith for information and photos.
"The building of a new hospital was instigated in Abbey Walk. Shortly after building had started, the famous golfer Freddie Tait was tragically killed in the Boer War and a Memorial Fund for him was established in the town. The money raised from this fund provided around half of the cost of the new building which became known as the St Andrews Memorial Hospital and it enabled it to be a bigger and better hospital than planned. It was opened by Freddie Tait's mother on 27 August 1902. A ward was named in memory of him."
