PERTHSHIRE ADVERTISER: 18.05.1921

UNFORGOTTEN BRAVE OF LONGFORGAN
UNVEILING OF WAR MEMORIAL

The parish of Longforgan, embracing the villages of Longforgan and Invergowrie, turned out in their hundreds on Saturday last to participate in the ceremony of unveiling the war memorial erected to the memory of those sons who had made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War.

The junior and senior of both village schools mustered to the number of about 200, under their respective headmasters, Mr A. H. Fairley and Mr D. W. Mitchell, and formed a choir, and their rendering of the hymn, “There is a green hill far away” was particularly touching. The company sang the 124th Psalm, and some verses of the 48th and 50th Paraphrases, the singing being led by Miss may Findlay at the organ.

Rev. Donald Davidson, St. Columba’s, Invergowrie, offered up prayer, after which a portion of the Scriptures was read by the Moderator-elect of the U.F. Church, Rev. Dr Adam Philip.

The chairman of the Parish Council, Mr W. C. Lawson, represented the common interests of the parish, and sketched the history of the movement, later accepting charge of the memorial on behalf of the council, conveyed by Mr George Cooper.

Mr Charles J. G. Paterson of castle Huntly performed the unveiling ceremony in a speech which will for a long time be forgotten, charged as it was with high literary power and profound sympathetic feeling.

Intense silence followed the lowering of the Union Jack, which covered the monument, after which Piper Skinner played “Lochaber No More”. The “Last Post” was sounded by Sergeant Angus Cameron, 4th Black Watch, and after the Benediction had been announced by Canon Duncan, All Soul’s, Invergowrie, the ceremony was concluded by singing the National Anthem.

The following 56 names are engraved on the memorial:- BENJAMIN ANDERSON, HUNTER ANDERSON, ALEXANDER BARRIE, JOHN BARCLAY, THOMAS BATCHELOR, ROBERT BIRRELL, COLIN BRUCE, CORNELIUS F. T. BOYD, JAMES CAREY, JAMES CATTANACH, JOHN CATTANACH, BRUCE CLARK, DOUGLAS CLARK, STEWART CLARK, PETER DALRYMPLE, ALEXANDER DAVIDSON, ROBERT R. DAVIDSON, JAMES F. DOIG, ALEXANDER GOWANS, WILLIAM GRANT, JAMES D. HAY, WILLIAM M. HAY, JOHN B. JOHNSTON, JAMES JOINER, WILLIAM LOW, GEORGE M. MAITLAND, JOHN MELVILLE, WILLIAM B. MELVILLE, JOHN MONTGOMERY, JAMES MORRIS, WILLIAM F. MURRAY, JAMES L. M'INTOSH, JOHN M'INTOSH, WILLIAM M'INTOSH, WILLIAM M'KELVIE, JOHN M'NIVEN, JOHN A. PEEBLES, ROBERT PITKEATHLY, GEORGE PRATT, JAMES PRATT, PETER PRATT, WILLIAM B. REW, DAVID RIDDLE, JOHN ROBERTSON, ANDREW RUNCIMAN, GEORGE SADLER, WILLIAM SADLER, ALEXANDER SCOTT, JOHN SCOTT, WALTER SCOTT, ALEXANDER SHAW, ALEXANDER SHEPHERD, DAVID C. SKINNER, JOHN SPEED, CHARLES B. STEWART, WILLIAM O. WILSON

After the ceremony was over, many wishing to view the monument at closer quarters, availed themselves of the opportunity of walking round the stone, and inspecting the names thereon. Numerous wreaths were deposited at the base of the monolith, and the laying down of a simple circle of laurels during the playing of the lament, by a small Invergowrie girl, whose father was killed, evoked many thoughts of feeling sympathy. Quite a large number of ex-servicemen attended, while the Invergowrie Boy Scouts under Captain Hunter were also present.
