Son of George Cooper of Buckhaven and Helen Galloway Cooper of Kirkcaldy, Fife.
Prior to the war William was a Police Constable with Ayrshire Constabulary.
and it appears his closest surviving relative at the time of his death was his aunt, a Mrs Forbes, of Bonnyton, Rayne, who inserted death notices and bequest information following William's death, in the local newspapers. |

A nice example of the memorials being for the family in the community and not about where a man was born.

AYR CONSTABLE’S BEQUEST. Ayr firm of lawyers intimate that Mr. William Cooper, the County Constabulary, Ayr, and lance-corporal in the Gordon 'Highlanders, who was killed in France in March last, has bequeathed legacy of £25 and one-fifth the residue his estate to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Lance Corporal William Cooper

WILLIAM COOPER was born in East Wemyss in Fife on the 2nd of October 1878. He was the only son of gamekeeper George Cooper from Rayne, Aberdeenshire, and his wife Helen. who originated from Fife.
Along with his three sisters, William was brought up in the English hamlet of Kiesley near Dufton in Westmoreland, where his father was employed.
By 1901 William, then aged twenty two, had followed in his father’s footsteps and was working as a gamekeeper back in Scotland at Muirpark in the Alloa district. William later joined the Ayrshire Constabulary and by 1911 was one of five constables living and working in the station house in Irvine High Street.
By the time he joined the army, some time prior to April 1917, William was working nearby in the County Constabulary headquarters in Charlotte Street. His initially served in the 3rd Reserve Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders and was later promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal in the 8th/10th Battalion.
On the 21st of March 1918 William Cooper’s unit were holding the line south of Monchy when they were subject to an enemy bombardment between the hours of three o’clock and seven o’clock in the morning, at the start of the German Spring Offensive. It was during this action that William Cooper was killed, aged thirty nine.
William, who was unmarried, drew up his will in April 1917, in which he made provision for a bequest of twenty five pounds and one fifth of the residue his estate to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
With his father hailing from the area, and his aunt residing in Rayne, in Aberdeenshire, the family connection to the city is the likely reason for William’s bequest, which proved to be a generous one with his estate valued at eight hundred and fifty six pounds, nineteen shillings, and sixpence.
William Cooper, like James Richmond, is amongst almost thirty five thousand service personnel commemorated on the Arras memorial in the Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery in the town of Arras, who have no known grave and who fell in the area between the spring of 1916 and August 1918. William Cooper is also commemorated on the Ayrshire police war memorial within the King Street police office in the county town of Ayr. |
