One for David or Adam to clarify I think - my understanding is as follows:

This forum was set up to post war memorials, the definition of which is commemorate those who died as a result of wars. We extend that a little to include Rolls of Honour of those who survived (as does UKNIWM). We extend it further still to include memorials to famous Generals etc because they symbolise the battles and those who died.

Our sister war graves forum was set up to post war graves and was extended to include military inscription on other graves. At the time it was set up, it was said that would be the place to post any other military memorials (for example anything mentioning someone's military service but which did not constitute a war memorial). An example would be a church memorial mentioning someones military service who perhaps died of old age. I posted one such military memorial here http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=269&mforum=scottishwargraves but I have not seen any others posted on the war graves forum. I have however seen some posted on the war memorials forum.

For sure we should post such memorials somewhere but on which forum? Or some new place? As an example of the type of memorial which is typical of the type, here is one.

Just so we are all singing off the same hymn sheet Smile

From what I remember of the discussions before it was if a plaque commemorated someone who died in battle then it should be on this forum but if they died in old age but had reference to their military career then they would go on the war graves forum.

It's not an ideal situation where you'd have some memorials from a church on one forum but others on another forum but the first set meet the criteria for inclusion here and the second don't. The point of adding them to the SWGP forum was that we did have somewhere to include them.

If David agrees I guess we'll have to start weeding out the ones we shouldn't have on this forum.

Cheers

Adam

I must say that I was thinking along the same lines - when is remembrance of an individual a memorial and when is it a war grave? Many of the 'war graves' that I have photographed and posted on our sister site may have been posted here if only they were senior officers rather than PBI!

Personally, as long as they are commemorated, I cannot get too worked up as to which of our sites they end up.

Sorry I'm late comign to this discussion, and I'm going to completely disagree with what appears to have been agreed.

To my mind, this forum is for military memorials. I know it says war memorials, but for me it's military memorials. That's why we included Rolls of men who served. It also encompasses ships bells which commemorate the men who served aboard that ship.

To my mind, the graves project is for graves. It doesn't matter if the man concerned is buried elsewhere. If it's in a graveyard, cemetery, churchyard, etc...it's for the other forum.

The example Paul posted above I would post here. That's what I have previously done and still intend to do.

Without wishing to get into a bun fight with David - He's the Boss and so would win! - I think that there is still a bit of overlap between the 2 projects. The example that I would use to explain my point is Culloden: the grave markers of the Clans are, appropriately in my view, on this site rather than our sister site.

I will, however, do exactly as I'm told Wink
