This may be a bit tenuous, not much of a link to Scotland but there were Scots sailors who lost their lives.

I was sorting through some very old photos and came across some I had taken on the west coast of Denmark (exact location not known) in around 1981. My two sons (now in their 30s) will probably not thank me too much for the photos Confused .

The two warships, the HMS St. George (98 guns) and the HMS Defence (74 guns) part of the British Baltic fleet ran aground and were lost outside Thorsminde at the west-coast of Jutland on the 24th of December 1811.

The disaster took place during the wars between Denmark and England (sic) in which the St. George were Contre-admiral Reynolds' flagship. The St. George together with an squadron had accompanied the last convoy of the year from the Swedish east-coast through the Danish interior waters.

The St. George had suffered damages at Rødsand south of Lolland and after having been scantily repaired the ship left the Swedish skerries at Gøteborg on the 17th of December heading towards England for the winter and escorted by the ships of the line, the Cressy and the Defence.

A Christmas hurricane forced the three ships towards the west coast and only the Cressy managed to avoid running aground.

Almost the entire crew from the St. George and the Defence died - a total of almost 1300 men. It was the greatest shipwreck disaster ever on the west-coast of Jutland and a serious loss for Royal Navy which in the same hurricane lost the ship of the line, the HMS Hero and the brig, the HMS Grasshopper at Texel.

(further details can be found here http://www.strandmus.dk/uk-version/index-uk.htm)

There is a full list of the crew of the St George here http://www.strandingsmuseum.dk/marin-ark/mandskab/st_george_vrag_mandskabslister_pdf_view.pdf the Scots have Scotland listed after their name. I have not discovered a crew list of the Defence.

The memorial stone was revealed at a ceremony in 1937 and is standing at the Thorsminde tongue facing the position where the St. George wrecked.

I cannot exactly remember (around 27 years have passed) but I think that there are 4 separate inscribed rocks. I will have a go with my very rusty Danish at the inscriptions a bit later.

My very loose translation of the inscriptions on the 4 stones in the order that I posted them. If anyone has a better translation, please post it.

"Christmas Eve 1811 seamen were stranded around this place of the British ships of the line, Defence and St George"

"Over the Christmas period the West Jutland sea (North Sea) gave up hundreds of young sailors and found their graves here amongst the dunes. This stone was raised to their memory. (line not translated). Raised by the Danish Press"

"From Defence came 538 men, 6 men were saved"

"From St George came 853 men, 12 men were saved"
