|
|
As can be seen the site is producing great results and a wealth of information. It is becoming a very important resource.
I mentioned in a previous thread about it becoming 'THE PLACE' for Scottish War Memorials.
However when I googled various phrases the site did not appear in, at least, the first few pages. Is there anything that can be done about that?
I think most researchers put a search phrase in for a subject they are interested in and hope to find an instant answer - thus producing more results and input.
Any thoughts? |

Mark,
I'm sure that it takes about a month for the likes of the google search "robots" to pick up on new links etc.
So hopefully by the end of January the individual threads off this site should be picked up. _________________

I know, Ive tried a few times.
It takes a little time to get listed on Google, although I believe there are ways to shorten the waiting time. Any suggestions will be gratefully received. |

Still no sign of the site when googling 'Scottish War Memorials'.
A chap in the town started a web-site recently on the Blairgowrie Juniors football team and he was third from top on the first page after about three days!
More patience needed, I suppose. |

I have never seen anything like it! Only by googling using "Scottish war memorials discussion forum" (in quotes) can I find it at all. At least that proves that it is listed, but why so low?
If you search for UK war memorials - my own very modest site comes up second, beaten only by UKNIWM and well above the superior roll of honour.com. It went to the top of the listings within 3 or 4 weeks I seem to recall.
The only thing I can suggest is that it is to do with the format of the site (a forum instead of a conventional site). My guess is that the format of the URL (.bizhat.com) means that the site as a whole (not just our bit) is only slightly relevant to the topic. If that is correct then the answer would be to register our own specific domain name and have all traffic rerouted to the forum (I do this with my own website). The registered name could be anything but something like www.scottishwarmemorials.org.uk (if available) should be cheap and yet effective. I thought of just doing it myself and letting you know but perhaps it is better if control stays with the site owner. I bought my domain from www.simply.com. If you want further info, send me a pm.

Interesting info. Spoons.
I think the boss will have to answer this one. It may be we'll have to live with it as it is.
I guess posting links in particular places will draw attention to it. |

The more we post the link to the site elsewhere, and the more we promote it, the more likely we are to get higher on Google and the like.
I'm reluctant to spend money on a dedicated domain name at this moment in time. Having said that, we're currently working on something incredibly important, which might require one. More on that another time. I don't want to say too much until it's ready to launch.

I just typed in 'Quintshill' in Google and our own entry came up top. We must be getting there.
Does the nature of a forum mean the hits are spread out over the pages visited?

Just as a marker so we can see how we progress; in google a search for "scottish war memorials" (without quotes) brought us in at number 84 today. I have asked a few correspondants to include a link to our site because I know that the number of external links weights the google results. |
