PTE. COLIN HENDERSON. Seaforths
Colin Henderson – age 39 – Private (3/7562) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Colin enlisted as Private (4867) in the Seaforths in 1894 and served with the 2nd Battalion in the South African War. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in August 1902 and he rejoined his battalion in Belgium in November 1914.
Born 1876 in Galashiels as Colin Baxter Henderson. Son of the late Henry Henderson (died 1915) and of Martha (Bennet) Henderson of Queen Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 24 May 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.


SGT. GEORGE B. HENDERSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
George Brown Henderson – age 28 – Sergeant (20561) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was a well known local athlete and was for a time the secretary of the Gala Harriers Club. He was an insurance agent when he enlisted in June 1915 and he joined the 8th KOSB in France in December 1915.
Born 1889 in Galashiels. Son of Robert and Marion (Somerville) Henderson of 87 Channel Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 17 April 1917 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.


PTE. GEORGE HENDERSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
George Henderson – age 46 – Private (200497) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George had joined the Black Watch as Private (4157) in 1890. He was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and he was working as a drawer in a woollen mill when he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and then served in Egypt and in Palestine before he was discharged from the Army due to illness and he was awarded a Silver War Badge (241566) in May 1917. George died of tuberculosis at his home in Galashiels.
Born 1873 in St. Boswells, Roxburghshire. Son of the late John and Isabella (Laing) Henderson, formerly of Galashiels. Husband of Catherine (Laidlaw) Henderson of 214 Haliburton Place, Galashiels who he married in 1904 in Galashiels as George Laing Henderson.
Died on 19 October 1919 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)

GNR. JAMES HENDERSON. Royal Garrison Artillery
James Henderson – age 43 – Gunner (159202) 254th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
James had been working in a paper mill in Balerno, Currie, Midlothian for about 20 years when he enlisted. The 254th Battery went to France in February 1917.
Born 1875 in Galashiels. Son of the late Margaret (Wilson) Henderson (died 1893) and of James Henderson of 152 Croft Street, Galashiels. Husband of Catherine (Carmichael) Henderson of Fairbairn's Buildings, Balerno who he married in 1908 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 9 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Currie Parish War Memorial.


PTE. JOHN HENDERSON. Camerons
John Henderson – age 22 – Private (17942) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John enlisted in April 1915 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1895 in Galashiels. Son of John and Marion (Arbuckle) Henderson of Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 25 April 1917 and buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.


PTE. ROBERT S. HENDERSON. South Africa
Robert Stewart Henderson – age 18 – Private (19911) 4th Regiment (South African Scottish) South African Infantry.
Robert was an apprentice engineer when he enlisted in April 1918, claiming to be over 19 years old. He sailed from Cape Town in July 1918 but contracted influenza and died near Guildford in Surrey. Robert is buried in the Henderson family plot in Galashiels.
Born c.1900 in Galashiels. (I cannot trace) Son of David and Christina J. Henderson of 18 Rufane Vale, Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
David is on the 1881 census aged 10 and was born in 1871 in Galashiels [Ladhope] but I cannot trace him thereafter.
Grandson of the late Robert and Margaret (Harkness) Henderson formerly of 15 Ladhope Vale, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 22 October 1918 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)

Thomas Henderson – age 25 – Lance Corporal (25059) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Thomas was a butcher in Galashiels, Selkirkshire when he married in 1912. He enlisted as Private (4/145126) in the Army Service Corps but was transferred to the Camerons in France.
Born 1893 in Melrose as Thomas Archibald Henderson. Son of Jessie Hall (Henderson) Inglis and step-son of George Inglis of Abbotsmeadow, Gattonside, Roxburghshire who had married 1899 in Corstorphine, Edinburgh. Husband of Janet Bain (Renton) Henderson, of 6 Stirling Place, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 18 September 1918 and buried in Bellicourt British Cemetery, Aisne, France.
Also named on the Gattonside Village War Memorial, Melrose.


PTE. WILLIAM HENDERSON. Royal Scots
William Henderson – age 19 – Private (44239) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
William enlisted as Private (2/5518) in a Training Reserve Battalion and was posted as Private (56479) to the Highland Light Infantry in France but was transferred to the Royal Scots.
The original grave registration of his battlefield burial place is for Private (56479) HLI but this was changed to Private (44239) Royal Scots when his remains were re-interred in Merville in August 1919.
Born 1899 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of James Henderson and Isabella Dawson (Grahamslaw) Henderson of 35 Croft Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 12 April 1918 and buried in Merville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


L-CPL. G. HENDRIE. Highland Light Infantry
George Hendrie – age 31 – Lance Corporal (5929) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
George had resided in the Bank Buildings in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire and had been employed in the Lochrin Ironworks. He was a structural engineer living at Canal Street, Coatbridge when he married in 1914.
Born 1884 in Coatbridge, Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. Son of John and Margaret (Murray) Hendrie of 239 Main Street, Coatbridge. Husband of Jane or Jeanie (Howieson) Hendrie of 260 Halliburton Place, Galashiels who he married in 1914 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 21 May 1916 and buried in Bois-Carre Military Cemetery, Haisnes, France.
Also named on the Coatbridge War Memorial together with his brother Matthew Eliot Hendrie, age 27, Private (8148) 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry who died of his wounds on 8 December 1916 and who is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.

James Turnbull Hendry – age 33 – Private (20312) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots.
James enlisted in Glasgow and joined his battalion just as they moved from France to Salonica in Northern Greece in December 1915.
Born 1883 in Galashiels as James Hendry. Son of Thomas and Lizzie or Elizabeth (Turnbull) Hendry of Galashiels. Husband of Mary Mitchell (Marlow) Hendry of 439 Govan Road, Govan, Glasgow who he married in 1908 in Govan as James Turnbull Hendry.
Killed in Action on 1 October 1916 and buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece.
Also named on the Dean Park Parish Church memorial in Govan and on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.

Born 1880 in Birgham, Coldstream, Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of the late William and Elizabeth Waughope (Patterson) Hendry (died 1894) of Birgham.
Husband of Catherine Chalmers (Ormiston) Hendry of South Inch Place, Perth and of 4 Ladhope Bank, Galashiels who he married in 1906 in Heriot, Midlothian.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Bailleul Road West Cemetery, St. Laurent-Blangy, France.
Also named in the City of Perth Roll of Honour (Golden Book)

William George Hendry – age 32 – Private (24605) King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William had been a machine minder when he enlisted. He served with the 2nd and 7th/8th Battalions before he was discharged from the Army with mental heath issues in September 1919. William died of dementia at 88 High Buckholmside, Galashiels.
Born 1888 in Birgham, Coldstream, Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of the late William and Elizabeth Waughope (Patterson) Hendry (died 1894) of Birgham.
Died on 29 March 1921.

PTE.THOMAS H. HENDRY. Royal Scots
Also named on the memorial as THOMAS HART – See above.
Thomas Hendry – age 25 – Private (9674) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas was a brass moulder when he enlisted in Edinburgh in August 1906. He served in India from January 1909 until the battalion left to returned to England in October 1914. He transferred to the 3rd Reserve Battalion in December and returned to the 1st Battalion in Belgium in March 1915.
Thomas was killed six weeks later.
Born 1889 in Galashiels as Thomas Hart. Son of James Hart of Darnick, Melrose, Roxburghshire and of Margaret Allan Short of Galabank Street, Galashiels. Margaret married Thomas Hendry in 1898 in Leith, Edinburgh and lived at 6 Northcote Street and at 55 Haymarket Terrace, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 22 April 1915 and buried in Bedford House Cemetery, Belgium.


GNR. MICHAEL HENRY. Royal Garrison Artillery
Michael Henry – age 38 – Gunner (110243) 219th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Michael had moved to Edinburgh by 1901 and he was a mercantile clerk when he enlisted there in May 1916. He was mobilised in August and landed with his battery in France in December.
Born 1879 in Galashiels. Son of George and Isabella (Hume) Henry, of 4 St John Street, Galashiels. Husband of Isabella (Hope) Henry of 202 Morningside Road, and of 58 Polwarth Gardens, Edinburgh who he married in 1908 in Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 7 July 1917 and buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium.


PTE. PETER HENRY. Scots Guards

Peter Henry – age 26 – Private (15377) Scots Guards.
Peter was a master baker and was reported as wounded in August 1917. He died of double pneumonia at his home in Galashiels.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late Elizabeth (Dobbie) Henry (died 1911) and of Peter Henry, Master Baker, of High Street, Galashiels.
Husband of Helen Barbour Henry of 199 Magdala Terrace, Galashiels who he married in 1916 in Galashiels.
Died on 21 July 1919.

Hugh Fraser Herbert – age 23 – Lance Corporal (8623) 17th Battalion (2nd City) Manchester Regiment.
Hugh had worked at Buckholm Mill in Galashiels before moving to Manchester in July 1913. He enlisted there and landed with his battalion in France in November 1915.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of William and Christina (Fraser) Herbert of Roxburgh Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.


L-CPL. FRANCIS HERBERTSON. Royal Army Service Corps
Francis Herbertson – age 34 – Lance Corporal (M2/078390) Motor Transport attached to 2nd Signals Battalion, Royal Army Service Corps.
In 1901 Francis was a cycle mechanic in Galashiels. He landed in France in May 1915 and served throughout the war but died in 1919 as the result of an accident.
Born 1884 in Galashiels as Francis Arthur Herbertson. Son of Robert Hunter Herbertson and Janet Weatherstone (Mather) Herbertson, of Galashiels and of Earlston, Berwickshire. Husband of Jane Mills (Mathison) Herbertson of 19 Douglas Street, Galashiels who he married in 1907 in Camlachie, Glasgow.
Died on Service on 24 April 1919 and buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.


MAJ. JOHN HERBERTSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Herbertson, Territorial Decoration – age 47 – Major, 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had been associated with the Volunteer and Territorial Battalions since 1898 when he was commissioned in the 1st Roxburgh & Selkirk Volunteer Rifles. He had served in the South African War with the KOSB Volunteers and transferred to the Territorial 4th KOSB as Captain and Honorary Major in 1908. He was awarded a TD in 1912 and was promoted to Major in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1868 in Galashiels. Son of the late Janet (Matthewson) Herbertson (died 1877) and of Andrew Hunter Herbertson of Beechwood, Galashiels; step-son of Margaret Campbell (Smart) Herbertson who married Andrew in 1878 in Stow, Midlothian.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.

Walter Thomson Herbertson – age 26 – Private (14386) 7th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Walter joined the 2nd KOSB in France in April 1915 before he transferred to the 7th KOSB. He was killed during the battle at Loos.
Born 1889 in Galashiels. Son of Robert and Elizabeth (Thomson) Herbertson of 198 Scott Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.


GNR. JOHN HIGGINS. Royal Field Artillery
I cannot trace this man.


PTE. ALLAN HINCKLIEFF. Camerons
Allan Hincklieff – age 28 – Private (S/17745) 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
In 1911 Allan was a tailor living with his parents at 6 Edwards Street, Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire. He enlisted at Halifax and joined the 1st Camerons in France in June 1915 but at some point he was transferred to the 5th Battalion. Allan was wounded in the Spring of 1918 and evacuated to the King George Hospital, Stamford Street, Lambeth, London where he died.
Born 1889 in Galashiels. Son of the late Margaret Russell (Smith) Hincklieff (died 1895) and of Allan Hincklieff.
Allan married Margaret Mabon in 1897 in Galashiels and by 1901 the family had moved to Leicester before settling in Sowerby Bridge.
Died of Wounds on 4 May 1918 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)

PTE. RUSSELL HINCKLIEFF. Canada

Russell Kerr Hincklieff – age 22 – Private (A40222) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Russell was brought up by his late mother's sister Mary Ann (Smith) Kerr in Hawick before he emigrated to Canada in April 1912. He was employed as a warehouseman in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan when he enlisted in December 1914. He sailed from Montreal in June 1915 and was posted to his battalion in France in August 1915. Russell was killed while a stretcher-bearer.
Born 1893 in Galashiels as Russell Hincklieff. Son of the late Margaret Russell (Smith) Hincklieff (died 1895) and of Allan Hincklieff of 11 Hollins Lane Sowerby Bridge. Nephew of Mrs Kerr of 1 Murray Place, Hawick.
Missing in Action on 11 September 1916 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

A third brother, Alexander, was a textile worker in Sowerby Bridge, aged 32, when he enlisted in February 1916. He was mobilised in October and as Private (38494) of the Prince of Wales's Own West Yorkshire Regiment he went to France in January 1917. He was wounded twice that year and on both occasions he was evacuated to hospitals in England. He was serving with the 8th Battalion when he was awarded a Military Medal in late 1918. Alexander survived the war and was demobilised in November 1919. He died in Sowerby Bridge in April 1963.

L-CPL. D. HISLOP. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Not listed by CWGC – thought to be:
Duncan Hislop – age 20 – Lance Corporal (?) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
I cannot trace a military record for this man but he was included on a Galashiels Roll of Honour, published by the Southern Reporter on 3/6/1915, as having died on service.
Duncan was a wool pattern weaver when he died of tuberculosis at 293 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Born 1894 in Portobello, Midlothian (also registered in Galashiels) as Duncan Cochrane Hislop. Son of the late Elizabeth Hislop (died 1905) formerly of 8 Damside, Galashiels.
Died on 11 March 1915.


PTE. FREDERICK C. HISLOP. Royal Scots
Not listed by CWGC.
Frederick David Campbell Hislop – age 23 – Private (4784) 3/9th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Fred was known locally as vocalist of great ability and he was working as a clerk when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised in April 1916 but discharged in September as medically unfit. Fred died of tuberculosis in the family home in Galashiels.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of the late Mary Armitage Hislop (died 1900) and of James Hislop of 190 Croft Street, Galashiels.
Died on 5 October 1916.


PTE.WILLIAM HISLOP. Royal Scots
William Hislop – age 24 – Private (10761) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was a millworker when he enlisted as Private (1825) in the Royal Scots Reserves in June 1910. He joined the 2nd Battalion of the Regular Army in September 1910 as Private (10761) and was posted to the 1st Battalion in India in September 1912. They were at Allahabad in August 1914 and returned to England in November, landing at Le Havre in December 1914.
Born 1891 in Galashiels. Son of Gideon Scott Hislop and Jessie McAlpine (Baillie) Hislop of Arthur Street, and of Dumbiedykes Road, Edinburgh who had married in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 25 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

A brother, Archibald Hislop, age 27 – born 1913 in Edinburgh, Private (2928045) 2nd Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders was killed on 26 March 1941 and is buried in Keren War Cemetery, Eritrea.

George joined his battalion at Gallipoli in October 1915. He then served in Egypt before the battalion moved to France in April 1916.
Born 1890 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late George Hogg (died 1895) and of the late Agnes Watt (Byers) Hogg (died 1910) formerly of Haliburton Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 14 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PTE. JAMES HOGG. King's Own Scottish Borderers
James Hogg – age 32 – Private (56328) 155th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
In January 1913, when his daughter Helen was born, James was a weighing machine maker at 58 Galabank Road, Galashiels. He was a member of the Territorial 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers and he was mobilised in August 1914. As Private (6797) he landed with the 1/4th Battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and later he served in Egypt and Palestine where he was fatally wounded at Gaza after he had been transferred to the Brigade's MGC Company.
Born 1884 in Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of John and Helen (Redford) Hogg of 511 Main Street, Bellshill, Lanarkshire. Husband of the late Margaret (Cook) Hogg (died 1914) who he married in 1912 in Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 21 April 1917 and buried in Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Palestine.


PTE. JAMES C. HOGG. Royal Scots
James Crosbie Hogg – age 29 – Private (18767) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
James was a tailor when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in January 1916 and fought his first battle on the Somme six months later.
Born 1886 in Galashiels. Son of the late Robert Hogg (died 1913) and of Marion (Crichton) Hogg of 41 Lintburn Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 1 July 1916 and buried in Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, Somme, France.

John was a promising rugby player and a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Merton, Berwickshire as John Anderson Hogg. Son of Henry and Nicholas (Anderson) Hogg of 276 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


SGT. JOHN HOGG. L&B HORSE. Cavalry
John Hogg – age 41 – Sergeant (273255) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
John was a slater, living at 58 Kirkbrae, Galashiels when he enlisted as Private (1293) in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry in May 1912. He was mobilised in August 1914 and became a Cook/Sergeant (120128) He was transferred to the Royal Scots and joined his battalion in France in September 1917 but was wounded and evacuated to hospital in the UK in December. John returned to his battalion in France in March 1918. His remains were recovered from the battlefield and were buried in Winkel (St. Eloi) Churchyard in Belgium in September 1920 and he was re-interred in Langemark in May 1952.

Killed in Action on 15 October 1918 and buried in Cement House Cemetery, Langemark, Belgium.

John William Hoggan – age 39 – Private (15857) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John was a vanman living at 41 Wilderhaugh, Galashiels when he enlisted in the KOSB Reserve in August 1914. He volunteered for overseas service in December and he was posted to the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in July 1915. He later served in Egypt before the battalion moved to France in March 1916. John became ill in December and was evacuated to Netley Hospital in Hampshire and to Murthly Hospital in Perthshire where he was adjudged to be no longer physically fit for active service. He was discharged from the Army and awarded a Silver War Badge (121496) in July 1917. John was living at 128 Galapark Road when he contracted double pneumonia and he died in the Galashiels Cottage Hospital.

Born 1882 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late William Hoggan (died 1914) and of Agnes (Thomson) Hoggan of 16 Island Street, and of 41 Wilderhaugh, Galashiels. Husband of Flora Isabel (Atkinson) Hoggan, of Gardeners Arms, Carr Hill, Gateshead, County Durham who he married in 1910 in South Shields.

PTE. ROBERT M. HOPE. Highland Light Infantry
Robert Milne Hope – age 39 – Private (20786) 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
In 1901 Robert, aged 21, was a shop assistant with an ironmonger in Edinburgh, boarding with the Ekins family. He married the eldest daughter Alice Mary in 1905 and he was a despatch clerk and storekeeper when he enlisted in Edinburgh as Private (35560) in the Royal Scots Fusiliers but he was posted to the HLI in France.
Born 1879 in Kelso, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Margaret (Waters) Hope (died 1902) and of George Hope (died 1918) of Galashiels. Husband of Alice Mary (Ekins) Hope of 111 Broughton Road, Edinburgh who he married in 1905 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 25 March 1918 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


CPL. ARCHIBALD P. HOUSLER. Canada
Archibald Paterson Housler – age 31 – Corporal (7042) 1st Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
In 1901 Archie, aged 15, was an apprentice bootmaker in Galashiels. He was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB for over 10 years and a member of the Galashiels Town Band before he emigrated to Canada in July 1906. He was working as a mechanic in Ontario when he enlisted in the 29th Waterloo Regiment, Highlanders and he volunteered for overseas service at Valcartier Camp in Quebec in September 1914. He sailed from Quebec with the 1st Battalion in October and landed in France in February 1915. Archie was killed four months later at Givenchy.
Born 1885 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of Alexander and Catherine (Paterson) Housler of 134 Magdala Terrace, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 15 June 1915 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.


PTE. ALEXANDER HOWDEN. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
Alexander Howden – age 28 – Private (225) 1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Alexander was a coal miner when he enlisted in Selkirk in January 1909. He joined the 1st Battalion in April and went out to Malta in September. He moved to India in November 1912 and returned to England with the battalion two years later. They landed at Le Havre in December 1914 but Alexander was killed three months later near Ypres.
Born 1888 in Galashiels as Alexander George Howden. Son of the late William Howden (died 1904) and of Janet Buchanan (Polson) Howden of 140 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 24 February 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

LT. JAMES G. HUNTER. Royal Scots
James Gladstone Hunter – age 24 – Second Lieutenant, 4th Battalion, Royal Scots attached to the 1/5th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment.
James worked in his father's woollen manufacturing business in Galashiels until he enlisted as Private (1956) in the Lothians & Border Horse Yeomanry. He was commissioned in the Royal Scots in December 1915 and joined the South Staffs in France in July 1916.
Born 1892 at Galabrig, Galashiels as James Hunter. [Ladhope] Son of George Alexander Hunter and of Isabella Scott (Gladstone) Hunter of Glenpark, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 14 March 1917 and buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, France.


PTE. WILLIAM HUNTER. Highland Light Infantry
William Hunter – age 23 – Private (21275) 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
William enlisted as Private (11819) in the Reserve Regiment of Cavalry but was posted to the 11th HLI in France in September 1915. The 10th and 11th Battalions were merged in May 1916. William was buried in Blangy Military Cemetery but was re-interred at Souchez after the war.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. Son of Robert and Isabella (Rennie) Hunter of 1 Tea Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 9 April 1917 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.

PTE. HART IMRIE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Hart Imrie – age 18 – Private (6508) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Hart was an apprentice engineer at Cochrane's Netherdale Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB in February 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1896 in Galashiels. Son of James and Catherine (Hart) Imrie of 19 Church Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


PTE. ANDREW INGLIS. Royal Highlanders (Black Watch)
Andrew Inglis – age 22 – Private (S/12543) 8th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Born 1896 in Galashiels as Andrew Baillie Inglis. Son of the late Christina (Baillie) Inglis (died 1899) and of Robert Inglis of 57 Wood Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 19 July 1918 and buried in Meteren Military Cemetery, France.

Andrew Inglis – age 31 – Lance Corporal (40765) 2nd Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Andrew was a reservists and was in Galashiels when he was mobilised at the outbreak of war. He landed as Private (9030) with the 2nd King's Own Scottish Borderers at Le Havre in August and later served with the 6th Battalion before he was transferred to the Scottish Rifles in October 1916.
Born 1885 in Leith, Edinburgh. Son of George Inglis and of Isabella Ranken (West) Inglis who had married in 1876 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 26 February 1917 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

Three sons of Walter and Elizabeth (Purves) Inglis of 49 Glendinning Terrace, Galashiels.
Elizabeth was killed in July 1917 when she was hit by car near her home.

PTE. CHARLES INGLIS. R.M.L.I. Royal Navy
Charles Inglis – age 23 – Private (PO/16583) H.M.S. Black Prince, Royal Marine Light Infantry.
Charles was a millworker when he enlisted in November 1912 and joined the armoured cruiser "Black Prince" in April 1914. The ship was shelled by several German battleships during the Battle of Jutland and exploded.
Born 1893 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 31 May 1916 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


PTE. GEORGE INGLIS. King's Own Scottish Borderers
George Inglis – age 19 – Private (40124) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1897 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

PTE. ARCHIBALD P. IRVING. Canada
Archibald Pettigrew Irving – age 23 – Lance Corporal (135375) Mechanical Transport Company, Canadian Army Service Corps.
By 1911 the family had emigrated from Galashiels to West Toronto, Ontario. Archibald was a clerk when he enlisted in the 74th Battalion at Toronto in July 1915. He sailed from Montreal in October and was posted to the 19th Battalion in France in February 1916. He was transferred to the 1st Divisional Ammunition Park in August and to the MT Company in October 1918. Archie died of pneumonia in the 14th General Hospital in Wimereaux.
Born 1895 in Galashiels. Son of James Smith Irving and of Isabella (Pettigrew) Irving of 197 Humberside Avenue, Toronto.
Died on Service on 25 December 1918 and buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, France.

Thomas Jack – age 36 – Sergeant (16074) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas was working in the Ferguslie Mills in Paisley, Renfrewshire when he enlisted. He landed with the 8th KOSB at Boulogne in July 1915. The 7th and 8th Battalions merged in May 1916.
Born 1879 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of the late Thomas and Janet (Gilchrist) Jack. Husband of Kate Thomson (Chisholm) Jack of 5 Thistle Street, Meikleriggs, Paisley, and of 5 Kinghorn Place, Edinburgh who he married in 1909 in Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 12 August 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


PTE. DANIEL C. H. JAMIESON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Daniel Cunningham Henderson Jamieson – age 21 – Private (200421) 1/5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Daniel was a solicitor's clerk in Galashiels and a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was posted as Private (6561) to the 1/4th KOSB in Egypt in 1916 and, after being wounded, he was transferred to the 1/5th KOSB. He moved with the battalion to France, landing at Marseilles in April 1918 but he was killed three months later. Daniel's remains, and those of three of his comrades, were recovered from their battlefield graves and re-interred at Villemontoire in October 1919.
Born 1897 in Selkirk. Son of Andrew Fleming Jamieson and Jessie (Henderson) Jamieson of 37 Croft Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 29 July 1918 and buried in Raperie British Cemetery, Villemontoire, Aisne, France.


SGT. ROBERT JARDINE. Seaforths
Robert Jardine – age 32 – Lance Sergeant (6504) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Robert had joined the Seaforths in 1899 and served in the South African War. He rejoined the regiment at the outbreak of war and was posted to the 2nd Battalion in Belgium in February 1915. Robert suffered from a poison gas attack and died in a field ambulance at Poperinghe.
Born 1882 in Galashiels. [Ladhope - indexed as Jerdan] Son of the late James Lunn Jardine (died 1910) and Williamina or Wilhelmina (Inglis) Jardine of Galashiels. Husband of Catherine Ellen (Lloyd) Jardine of 42 Palermo Street, Springburn, Glasgow who he married in 1908 in West Derby, Lancashire.
Date of Wounds on 4 May 1915 and buried in Poperinghe Old Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.
