GEORGE H. COMBE
George Henderson Combe – age 29 – Private (43584) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
George was an engine-brakesman when he enlisted in February 1916. He joined his battalion in France in July 1916.
Born 1887 in Dunbar. Son of the late David Combe (died 1916) and of Isabella (McClemand) Combe of 82 High Street, Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 28 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


HENRY G. CONGDON – name added to the memorial in October 2019.
Henry George Congdon – age 51 – Regimental Sergeant Major (44469) H.Q. 12th Division, Royal Engineers.
Henry had been discharged from the Royal Engineers as CSM (18944) in August 1905 and in 1911 he was a publican in Maidenhead, Berkshire. He re-enlisted and landed as Company Sergeant Major in France in June 1915. Henry was awarded a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and in April 1918 a Croix de Guerre (Belgium).
Born 1867 in Dunbar. Son of the late Samuel Congdon (died 1908) and of Eleanor (Sparks) Congdon (died 1914) of Dunbar. Husband of Mary (Hollingworth) Congdon who he married in 1891 in Battle. Sussex.
Died of Wounds on 28 May 1918 and buried in Varennes Military Cemetery, France.


GEORGE E. CROOKE
George Edward Crooke – age 23 – Gunner (1038) 1st Battery, Machine Gun Corps (Motors)
George was educated at St Mary's School in Melrose. He joined the Motor Machine Gun Service of the Royal Field Artillery and he landed in France in September 1915. The creation of the MGC in October incorporated the MMGS, which now became known as the Machine Gun Corps (Motors).
A battery included 18 motorcycle/sidecar combinations, carrying 6 Vickers machine guns with ammunition and spare equipment; 8 motorcycles without sidecars and a sidecar combination for the officer commanding.
Born 1894 in Dunbar. Son of William and Agnes Dodds (Hunter) Crooke of Craigcrooke, Dunbar and of 103, Princes Street, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 17 April 1918 and buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
Also named on the St Mary's School Memorial.

JOHN CROSS
Note: CWGC and SDGW show the name as James John all other records have John James.
James John Cross – age 37 – Private (8515) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John James Cross was a grocer's assistant when he enlisted as Private (5174) in the KOSB in January 1895. He joined the 2nd KOSB in India in October 1896 and returned to the KOSB Depot in April 1900. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in July 1902 and discharged from the Army in January 1907. He had been for many years in the employment of Mr W.R. Cunningham, coal merchant, in Dunbar when he re-enlisted and he joined his battalion at Galipoli in May 1915 but he was killed a month later.
Born 1878 in Halton, Hastings, Sussex as John James Avery. Son of Harriett Annie (Avery) Cross and step-son of George David Cross of Southend, Essex who married in 1883. Husband of Ellen (Langley) Cross who he married in 1901 in Berwick-on-Tweed.
Missing in Action on 4 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM
William Cunningham, Military Medal – age 24 – Private (11392) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911, aged 17, William was a Private with the KOSB in Berwick-on-Tweed and at the outbreak of war he was with the 1st KOSB at Lucknow in India. The battalion returned to the UK via Egypt landing in December 1914 but early in 1915 they sailed again landing at Gallipoli in Turkey in April 1915. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli they moved to France in March 1916. William was awarded a M.M. In November 1916.
Born 1893 at Castle Place in Dunbar. Son of the late James Johnston Cunningham (died 1915) and of the late Margaret (Allan) Cunningham (died 1916) His sister Sybella Janet (Cunningham) Balderstone of The Vaults, Dunbar who married in March 1918 in Dunbar was named as a legatee.
Died of Wounds on 13 May 1918 and buried in Cinq Rues British Cemetery, Hazebrouck, France.

THOMAS CURR
Thomas Curr – age 26 – Second Lieutenant, 4th (Reserve) Battalion attached to the 18th Battalion, (4th Glasgow) Highland Light Infantry.
Thomas was educated at Dunbar before he became a Student of Arts and Science at Edinburgh University. He graduated M.A. with honours in Maths, and B.Sc. in 1914. He enlisted as Private (2482) in the 9th Royal Scots in October 1914 and was commission in October 1915. He joined the 18th HLI in France in May 1916.
Born 1890 in East Linton, Prestonkirk, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of William Simpson Curr and Annie Simpson (Bisset) Curr of Biel Mill, Stenton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian and of Ninewar, Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 4 October 1916 and buried in Faubourg D'amiens Cemetery, Arras, France.
Also named on the Stenton Parish War Memorial and on the Edinburgh University Old College memorial and Roll of the Fallen.


JAMES W. DAVIS
James William Davis – age 30 – Lance Corporal (11780) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
James was an apprentice blacksmith when he enlisted as Private (7028) in the RSF in December 1901. He served in India from November 1903 until November 1909 when he transferred to the Army Reserve and he was discharged from the Army in December 1913. James was living with his family in High Wycombe in 1911 but he was working in Methil in Fife when he married in December 1913 and he re-enlisted at Leven, joining his old battalion in France in November 1914.
Born 1885 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. Son of the late William Davis (died 1896) and Mary Ann (Goodman) Davis of Blackwell Heath, Wycombe. Husband of Helen Murray (Nicholson) Davis of 57 High Street, Dunbar who he married in 1913 in Dunbar.
Died of Wounds on 18 March 1916 and buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.

KENNETH DICKSON
Kenneth Dickson – age – Rifleman (324867) 2/6th Battalion, London Regiment (City of London Rifles)
At the outbreak of war Kenneth was resident in Dunbar and as Private (1637) in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry he landed with “A” Squadron in France in September 1915. They moved with the 26th Division to Salonica in northern Greece in December and Kenneth served there until November 1916. He was posted to the 2/6th London Regiment in France in October 1917 but he was killed a month later.
Born 1889 in Coldingham, Berwickshire. Son of Peter Dickson and Jessie (McRae) Dickson of Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 2 November 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


WILLIAM S. DICKSON
William Saunders Dickson – age 32 – Private (40870) 17th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
William was posted as Private (2275) to the Royal Scots in France but was transferred to the HLI.
Born 1883 in Aberlady, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Robert and Christina (Burns) Dickson of West Barns, Dunbar. Husband of Margaret (Walker) Dickson of Trows, West Barns, Dunbar who he married in 1907 in Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 18 November 1916 and buried in New Munich Trench British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, France


JOHN DONALDSON
John Donaldson – age 20 – Private (41646) 5th/6th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John was posted as Private (48178) to the 17th Royal Scots in France and was transferred to the Cameronians.
Born 1898 in Dunbar. Son of John and Alison (Hunter) Donaldson of Belhaven House Lodge, Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 25 October 1918 and buried in Romeries Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


THOMAS EDINGTON
Thomas Edington – age 24 – Gunner (125538) "D" Battery, 71st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Born 1893 in Dunbar. Son of James Edington and of Agnes (Anderson) Edington of High Street, Dunbar,
Killed in Action on 22 April 1917 and buried in Feuchy Chapel British Cemetery, Wancourt, France.

JOHN EDMONDS
Possibly:
John Edmond – age 33 – Private (S/10491) 9th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
John was a miner when he enlisted and he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1870 in Prestonpans as John Hardie Edmond. Son of George and Helen (Hardie) Edmond. Husband of Margaret (Arnot) Edmond of Cookie's Wynd, Prestonpans who he married in 1895 in Prestonpans.
Died of Wounds on 25 September 1915 and buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Loos, France.
Named on the Prestonpans Parish War Memorial.


ALEX. McK. ELRICK
Alexander McKenzie Elrick – age 32 – Gunner (18173) 111th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
Alexander landed in France with his battery in October 1914.
Born 1883 in Dunbar as Alexander McKenzie. Son of Janet McKenzie.
In 1891, aged 8, he was living with uncle and aunt John and Barbara McKenzie in Dunbar.
Husband of Jessie Johnston (Marr) Elrick of Vennel, Dunbar who he married as Alexander Elrick McKenzie in 1911 in Dunbar. In 1919 she married William Henry Compton in Dunbar and later they lived at 35 Grace Street, Glasgow.
Killed in Action on 20 June 1918 and buried in Hedauville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


JOHN ESSON
John Esson – age 42 – Private (30374) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots
John was a boarding house keeper when he enlisted in March 1916. He joined his battalion in France in August. John was wounded and captured and he died in the German Field Hospital at Dechy. He was buried in the Communal Cemetery there and re-interred at Souchez after the war.
Born 1878 Aboyne, Aberdeenshire. Son of the late John (died 1885) and of Mary (Christie) Esson of Silver Street Boarding House, Dunbar.
Died of Wounds on 10 May 1918 and buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.

GAVIN FAIRBAIRN
Gavin Fairbairn – age 33 – Private (325543) 5th/6th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Gavin was a vanman when he enlisted as Private (1850) in the Territorial 8th Royal Scots in November 1915. He was posted to the 1/8th Battalion in France in June 1916 but was injured in September when he was caught between two railway wagons at Merville Station and he was admitted to the 7th General Hospital at St. Omer. Due to illness he was admitted to the 22nd General Hospital in March 1917 and then posted to the 5th/6th Battalion in October 1917.
Born 1885 in Belhaven, Dunbar as Gavine Robert Fairbairn. Son of Peter Watson Fairbairn and of Agnes (Colston) Fairbairn of 22 Edinburgh Road, Belhaven, Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 3 April 1918 and buried in Bienvillers Military Cemetery, France.

JOHN FAIRBAIRN

John Fairbairn – age 20 – Private (34119) 14th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment.
John was a farm servant when he enlisted as Private (22053) in the Cavalry Reserve in February 1916. He joined the 1st Dragoon Guards in France in mid-1916 but at some point he was transferred to the RWR.
Born 1897 in Dunbar as John White Fairbairn. Son of Peter Watson Fairbairn and of Agnes (Colston) Fairbairn of 22 Edinburgh Road, Belhaven, Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 13 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.


PETER FAIRBAIRN
Peter Fairbairn, Military Medal – age 35 – Private (352405) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Peter had served his apprenticeship as a butcher in Dunbar and had worked in East Linton and in Dunbar. He enlisted as Private (5736) in the 1/9th Royal Scots and he was awarded a M.M. in July 1917.
Born 1882 in Dunbar. Son of Paul and Catherine (Gullen) Fairbairn of Cromwell Cottage, Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 1 August 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

The Farquhar family came to Dunbar by 1901 and I believe the two following men were brothers but I cannot trace a military record for this man.

Born 1893 in Colinton, Linlithgowshire/Midlothian.

George Farquhar – age 31 – Sergeant (11708) 6th/7th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
George landed with the 6th Battalion at Boulogne in May 1915.
Born 1885 in Colinton, Linlithgowshire/Midlothian. Son of John and Mary (Smith) Farquhar of North Street, Belhaven, Dunbar. Husband of Mary Annie (Currie) Farquhar who he married in 1914 in Ayr.
Killed in Action on 1 July 1916 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.


JOHN A. FARRELL
John Allan Farrell – age 28 – Driver (T1/1680) 3rd Horse Base (Salonika) Royal Army Service Corps.
John landed in France in September 1915 and at some point went out to Salonica in northern Greece. He died of illness at the hospital at St. Germain near Lyons probably as he was returning home.
Born 1889 in Dunbar. Son of William and Isabella (Burgess) Farrell of Dunbar. Husband of Florence Alice E. (Wood) Farrell who he married in early 1915 in Hastings, Sussex.
Died on Service on 19 December 1918 and buried in St. Germain-Au-Mont-D'or Communal Cemetery Extension, France.


ADAM FLEMING
Adam Fleming – age 30 – Private (S/16196) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Adam was a vanman in Dunbar when he enlisted in February 1916. He joined his battalion in France in August 1916 but he was killed near Rancourt and he was buried in a front line trench which was lost.
Born 1886 in Kirkwall, Orkney as Adam Craigie Fleming. Son of Adam and Jane (McKenzie) Fleming of Barney Hill, Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 24 December 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.

SISTER VIOLET FRASER – this is the final name on the original WW1 panel.
Not listed by CWGC.

Violet Thomasina Millie Fraser – age 36 – Sister, Serbian Relief Fund Nurse.
In 1911 Violet was a nurse at King's College Hospital in London. She died at Predejane, Serbia.
Born 1883 in Partick Glasgow. Daughter of the late Thomas Fraser (born 1848 in Dunbar and died 1914 in New Jersey, USA) and of Emilia Buchanan (Johnston) Fraser. Sister of Margaret Eliza Emilia (Fraser) Falgate of Pinkerton Dunbar.
Died on 5 March 1919 and buried in Predejane, Serbia.


THOMAS F. FRATER – name added to the memorial in October 2019.
Thomas Fairbairn Frater – age 42 – Stoker 1st Class (303083) H.M.S. Actaeon, Royal Navy.
Thomas was a baker when he joined the navy in January 1903. He was serving at the Torpedo School at Sheerness in Kent (known as H.M.S. Actaeon) when he was found drowned in Sheerness Harbour.
Born 1877 in Dunbar. Son of the late Adam Frater (died 1884) and of the late Marion (Runciman) Frater (died 1901) of Dunbar.
Died on Service on 25 September 1919 and buried in Sheerness Cemetery, Isle of Sheppey. Kent.


ROBERT K. GALLOWAY
Robert Kirkwood Galloway – age 23 – Acting Sergeant (120092) Lothians and Border Horse and Royal Air Force.
Robert had been an Instructor in the LBH before he joined the RAF. He was killed in a flying accident near Eastbourne in Sussex.
Born 1894 Dunbar. Son of John Campbell Galloway and Barbara Currie (Kirkwood) Galloway of 7 Letham Place, Dunbar. Husband of Margaret Jane (Anderson) Galloway who he married in May 1918 in Cramond, Edinburgh.
Died on Active Service on 23 August 1918 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)

Robert Gardner – age 22 – Private (S/16726) 6th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Robert joined his battalion in France in August 1915.

Thomas Gardner – age 22 – Private (2737) 1/5th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
Thomas was employed by a grocer in Dunbar when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in May 1915 but he was killed a month later.
Born 1893 in Dunbar. Son of Thomas and Agnes Jane (Hossack) Gardner of 1 West Port, Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 28 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.


JAMES GAUGHAN
James Gaughan – age 24 – Private (1794) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
James enlisted in the Royal Scots Reserve in 1908 and at the outbreak of war he was posted to the 2nd Battalion, joining them in France in September 1914. James was killed near Hooge during a diversionary attack in support of the attack on Loos.
Born 1891 in Dunbar. Son of James and Mary (McGuiness) Gaughan of 141 High Street, Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

John Gaughan – age 18 – Private (56448) 8th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John enlisted as Private (49510) in the Royal Scots but he was posted to the Cameronians.
Born 1900 in Dunbar. Son of James and Mary (McGuiness) Gaughan of 141 High Street, Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 29 July 1918 and named on the Soissons Memorial, France.

THOMAS GILHOOLY
Thomas Joseph Gilhooly – age 19 – Private (34900) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Born 1897 in Dunbar. Youngest son of the late John Gilhooly (died 1907) and of Ann (Langan) Gilhooly of Bridge Cottage, West Barns, Dunbar. His three brothers also served.
Missing in Action on 12 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


JAMES GILLAN
Note: for James and John (below) the family name varies between Gillan and Gullan in Civil records.
James Gillan – age 35 – Private (24117) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots
James was a labourer kiving at 123 High Street, Dunbar when he enlisted in March 1916. He was posted to his battalion in France in July 1916 but was attached to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers and was killed three weeks later.
Born 1881 in Dunbar as James McLaren Gillan. Son of the late Andrew Gillan (died 1892) and of Elizabeth (Smith) Gillan of 2 Vennel, Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 30 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


JOHN GILLAN
John Gillan – age 19 – Private (36698) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
John was made a Prisoner of War in April 1918. He contracted influenza and died of pneumonia in the German Saxon Field Hospital at Hautmont.
Born 1899 in Dunbar. Son of the late Thomas Gillan (died 1915) and of Jane (Young) Gillan of 32 Victoria Street, Dunbar.
Died on Active Service on 16 October 1918 and buried in Hautmont Communal Cemetery, France.


JAMES W. GOOD

James Wilson Good – age 24 – Private (4438) 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
James was a gamekeeper at Broxmouth Park, Dunbar when he enlisted as Private (20735) in February 1915. He joined the 2nd Royal Scots in France in August 1915 but he was wounded in October and evacuated to the 1st Northern General Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. After he had recovered he was posted to the 1/4th Royal Scots in Egypt in January 1916 but he died of drowning while bathing with comrades in the Suez Canal.
Born 1891 in Garvald, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Gordon and Annie (Wilson) Good of Broxmouth Park, Dunbar.
Died on Active Service on 8 March 1916 and buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

WILLIAM GORDON
William Gordon – age 36 – Private (44488) 62nd Company, Machine Gun Corps.
William was a labourer living with his family at 16 Victoria Street, Dunbar when enlisted in the local Territorial 8th Royal Scots in October 1914. He was transferred to the MGC in July 1916 and joined his Company in France in September. He was treated for a mild mental illness at the 8th General Hospital at Rouen in September 1917 and evacuated to the Military Hospital at Netley in Hampshire. William was discharged from the army and awarded a Silver War Badge (518692) in November 1917 and he died of cerebral disease in the District Asylum at Haddington, East Lothian.
Born 1883 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Son of the late William Gordon (died 1907) and of Elizabeth (Boyle) Gordon of Canal Road, Polmont, Falkirk. Husband of Margaret Turnbull (Smith) Gordon who he married in 1907 in Falkirk.
Died on 17 September 1918 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWGC)


PETER GRANT
Peter Grant – age 19 – Private (958) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Peter had joined the Territorial 8th Royal Scots before the war and he landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November 1914. He died in the 22nd Field Ambulance at Sailly but his burial place was lost.
Born 1894 in Dunbar. Son of the late Elizabeth (Turnbull) Grant (died 1911) and of Alexander Grant of Paterson Terrace, Dunbar.

WILLIAM GULLEN
William Hamilton Mackie Gullen – age 22 – Private (72242) 234th Company, Machine Gun Corps.
William enlisted as Private (1618) in the Royal Scots but he was transferred in France as Private (40096) to the Highland Light Infantry before he was posted to the MGC.
Born 1895 in Dunbar. Son of Adam and Alison Henderson (Nisbett) Gullen of Woodbush House, Dunbar.
Killed in Action on 9 October 1917 and buried in Cement House Cemetery, Belgium.

GEORGE HANNAN
George Hannan – age 39 – Private (14386) 3rd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
George was a carter in Dunbar when he enlisted. He served in the 3rd Labour Company of the Seaforths.
Born 1878 in Dunbar as George Robertson Hannan. Son of the late Agnes (Robertson) Hannan (died 1889) and of Robert Hannan of Writers' Court, Dunbar. Husband of Margaret Dunn (Henderson) Hannan of 129 High Street, Dunbar who he married in 1911 in Dunbar.
Died of Wounds on 30 September 1916 and buried in Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.


ANDREW C. HENDERSON
Andrew Crooks Henderson – age 19 – Corporal (40057) 10th/11th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Andrew was a member of the local Territorial 8th Royal Scots and as Private (981) he joined the 1/8th Battalion in France in December 1914. At some point he was transferred to the HLI.
Born 1897 in Dunbar. Son of John and Jemima (Bathgate) Henderson of Strand House, Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 23 April 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.


GEORGE HENDERSON
George Henderson – age 26 – Private (40548) 17th Battalion, Royal Scots.
George as Private (4157) in the Royal Scots Greys was with the 5th Reserve Cavalry Regiment at the Barracks in Dunbar when he married in 1914.
Born 1892 in Aberdeen. Son of George Annand Henderson and of Helen (Annand) Henderson. Husband of Elizabeth Begbie Blair (Dingwall) Henderson who he married in 1914 in Dunbar.
Died of Wounds on 20 July 1917 and buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, France.


SAMUEL H. HENDERSON – name added to the memorial in July 2021.
Samuel Harrington Henderson – age 23 – Private (375825) 2/10th (Cyclist) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Samuel died at Temphall Camp, Coldingham, Berwickshire from a gun shot wound.
Born 1893 in Dunbar. Son of the late John Henderson (died 1911) and of the late Elizabeth Robertson (Harrington) Henderson (died April 1917) of 6 Friarbank Terrace, Dunbar.
Died on Service on 21 August 1917 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)

JAMES HEPBURN
James Hepburn – age 27 – Petty Officer Stoker (233404) H.M.S. Warrior, Royal Navy.
In 1901 James was living with his family in Waterford, Ireland where his father worked with a railway company in Ferrybank, County Kilkenny, and James was an engine cleaner when he joined the navy in September 1906. He joined the armoured cruiser “Warrior” in July 1913 as Leading Stoker and was promoted to in April 1915. “Warrior” was stationed in the Mediterranean when the First World War began and was transferred to the Grand Fleet in December 1914. She was heavily damaged during the Battle of Jutland in 1916, after which she withdrew and was later abandoned and sank in a rising sea.
Born 1888 in Prestonkirk, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Agnes Mary (Hepburn) Hepburn (died 1894) and of the late Benjamin Hepburn (died 1903 in Ireland) and step-son of Janet Scott (Blair) of Gardner Street, Dunbar who married Benjamin in 1897 in North Berwick.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 31 May 1916 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.


JAMES HERKES
James Herkes – age 27 – Rifleman (47430) 1st Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles.
James was a maltster in Dunbar when he enlisted as Private (T/3/0217166) in the Army Service Corps and he landed in France in September 1915. At some point he was transferred to the RIR.
Born 1890 in Dunbar. Son of Thomas and Isabella (Punton) Herkes of Castlegate, Dunbar. Husband of Charlotte Denholm (Watson) Herkes who he married in 1914 in Dunbar.
Missing in Action on 1 December 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


WILLIAM HILL
William Hill, Military Medal and Bar – age 26 – Lance Corporal (34468) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
William died in the 56th Casualty Clearing Station at Grevillers. The announcements of the awards of his two Military Medals were made in January and March 1919.
Born 1892 at Mountalban, Coldingham, Berwickshire. Son of William and Isabella (Aitchison) Hill of Thurston Smithy, Thorntonloch, Innerwick, Berwickshire and of Hedderwickhill and Biel North Lodge, Dunbar,
Died of Wounds on 28 September 1918 and buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Innerwick Parish War Memorial.

PETER HOGG
Peter Hogg – age 26 – Private (325193) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Peter was a surfaceman with the North British Railway Company at East Barns, Dunbar when he enlisted in the local Territorial 8th Royal Scots in March 1914. He was mobilised in August 1914 and as Private (1006) he landed with the 1/8th Battalion at Le Havre in November 1914.
Born December 1889 at Bowshiel in Grantshouse, Cockburnspath, Berwickshire as Paterson Hogg. Son of Ebenezer and Helen (Hunter) Hogg of East Barns, Dunbar and of Abby Farm, North Berwick.
Missing in Action on 22 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the North British Railway Company memorial in Waverley Station, Edinburgh.


ALEXANDER HUNTER
Alexander Hunter – age 21 – Private (241635) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Born 1896 in Dunbar. Son of James and Janet Wilson (King) Hunter of East Barns, Dunbar and of Tyninghame Village, Prestonkirk, East Lothian.
Missing in Action on 26 September 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.


WALTER JARDINE
Walter Boyd Jardine – age 47 – Gunner (96104) 200th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, transferred as Private (541698) to the 487th Agricultural Company of the Labour Corps.
Walter was a tailor when he enlisted in late 1915 and the 200th Battery landed in France in November 1916. He was evacuate home and treated for shell shock in August 1917. Walter died of influenza in the Military Hospital at Ripon Camp in Yorkshire.
Born 1877 in Jedburgh as Walter Jardine. Son of the late John Jardine and of the late Margaret (Boyd) Jardine of Pleasance, Jedburgh. Husband of Margaret Douglas (Hood) Jardine of 148 High Street, Dunbar who he married in 1910 in Hutton, Berwickshire.
Died on Service on 24 February 1919 and buried in Dunbar Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Jedburgh War Memorial and on the Trinity Church memorial in Jedburgh Old and Trinity Church together with two of his brothers - Adam Jardine, Private (G/16371) 10th Battalion, Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) Died 31 July 1917, and William Boyd Jardine. Corporal (3015) 2/10th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Died 16 January 1917.

JAMES R. JEFFREY
Possibly:
James Jeffrey – age 29 – Private (273157) 17th Battalion, Royal Scots.
In 1911 James was assisting in his father's grocery business. He enlisted as Private (1005) in the Lothians and Border Horse Yeomanry at Haddington and landed with the 1/1st LBH in France in September 1915. He was renumbered as Private (120057) in 1917 and in September 1917 his squadron was absorbed into the 17th Royal Scots.
Born 1888 in Cornhill-on-Tweed, Berwick, Northumberland. Son of Nicholas and Isabella Jamieson (Crammond) Jeffrey of Cornhill-on-Tweed, Northumberland.
Missing in Action on 24 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Named on the Cornhill-on-Tweed Parish War Memorial.


B. JENKINS
Bertie Jenkins – age 27 – Sergeant (3696) Dragoon Guards attached to the King's African Rifles.
Bert was a Sergeant with the 5th Dragoon Guards at the Barracks in Dunbar when he married in November 1914.
Born 1891 in West Ham, Essex. Son of Henry and Mary (Bugden) Jenkins. Husband of Annie (Leyden) Jenkins of 155 High Street, Dunbar.
Died on Service on 13 November 1918 and buried in Dar Es Salaam (Upanga Road) Cemetery, Tanzania.


JOHN KERR
I cannot trace this man.



LOUIS F. KERRIDGE – name added to the memorial in October 2019.
Louis Frederick Kerridge – age 34 – Private (3/6258) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Louis was a waiter when he enlisted in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry in August 1914 but he was considered to be unsuitable and he was discharged in October. He did however enlist in the Camerons and joined the 1st Battalion in France in December 1914 only to be killed a month later.
Born 1880 in Edinburgh. Son of the late George Kerridge (died 1897) and of Jane (Robson) Kerridge of Kerridge's Hotel, Bayswell Park, Dunbar. Husband of Jane Anderson (Cormie) Kerridge who he married in 1902 in Spott, East Lothian,
Missing in Action on 27 January 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
