Rev William Alexander McLeod Hut Chaplin YMCA Service Med. Ex. Force
b 28-08-1881 died Greece 18-11-16 Age 35 Son of Mary McLeod, 3 Skene Pl; Aberdeen & the late William McLeod. Aberdeen University date 16th
Son of William Macleod, stereotyper ; born Aberdeen, 28 August 1881. For several years he was in the service of the University Press ; but he creditably aspired to the Christian Ministry, and his employer, who sympathized with his aspiration, considerately facilitated his attendance at the University as a student in Arts in 1907 and after. In 1913 he became a Divinity student, gained several class-prizes, and while still a student, became missionary assistant to the minister of the West Church, Aberdeen, in which post he gained the high esteem and warm regard of the congregation. He resigned his work in the spring of 1916 and became (after licence) assistant to the minister of Tarves. Within a few months thereafter, however, he was moved by patriotic sentiment to offer himself for war-service as a Hut Chaplain, under the Y.M.C.A., and was stationed at Salonika where his work was much appreciated. Before the year expired he died of dysentery, 16 November 1916. The Chairman of the National Council of the Y.M.C.A. bore cordial witness to the "encouragement and comfort" which the soldiers received from Macleod's devoted ministrations, and a fellow-worker, a Canon of the Church of England, testified to the "mingled strength and tenderness of his character. Salonika Anglo French Military Cemetery,Lembet Rd G 6 Grave 683 City Roll of Honour. Aberdeen University and Tarves
