Adam

Images and details have been added for New Pitsligo and Culvie. Better quality ones will follow in time. At least the names are now shown on the Forum.

There is no Parish of Culvie, it is simply a district within the Parish of Marnoch.

You will find what should be Marnoch ( at least the Free Kirk members memorial) is recorded on this Forum as Aberchirder. This is not correct but stems from the wrong details on UKNIWM being repeated. The memorial is sited in the town of Aberchirder.
Things are not quite clear here, as pointed out in that thread in Feb 2007, due to the effects of Disruption which ended in 1929.

I am still trying to check out the position with regard to the Established Kirk members who fell.

Adam,

Strontian WW1 & WW2 is already done:
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=3549&highlight=strontian

Clachan Church was locked when I tried a few weeks back.
I couldn't find either the Spean Bridge or the Roy Bridge Memorials although there is a "Memorial" hall in the latter. It was too wet to ask anyone!

Jim

Thanks for the quick update. I have now removed Culvie and New Pitsligo from the list above.

Should we be prefixing the Aberchirder thread title with 'Parish of Marnoch'? or should we leave it just now until the Established church memorial is found (if there is one)?

I look forward to seeing the updated photos for Culvie and New Pitsligo. Aberdeenshire memorials are always more varied in style than other parts of Scotland.

Regards

Adam

Many thanks also to Mr & Mrs Aase Goldsmith for the two Ceres, Fife memorials which have just been posted by John Burnett.

The Goldsmiths are slowly but surely working their way through Fife's memorials and even though they aren't members of the forum are very welcome contributers.

With regard to the four Western Isles Memorials posted by Adam Brown on 24 August 2008, can I clarify that three of them are known quite simply as the North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist War Memorials and all are situated on the main trunk road A865 than runs through the spine of the island chain.

North Uist is at Clachan na Luib on your right on a hill just as you are about to enter the village from Lochmaddy. It is not in Carinish (as listed)which is another North Uist village on a totally different road. Clachan is the starting point for the circular road up the west coat (including Carinish), along the north coast and down the east coast by Lochmaddy.

Benbecula is located on the right hand side on a bend on the main road as one travels south, with a side road to the right taking one to the village at St Mary's Church, Griminish.

South Uist is on the left hand side of the main road as one travels south from Benbecula to Daliburgh/Lochboisdale and is not in a village. The nearest ones being Gerinish to the north and Bornish to the south.

Eriskay names are on the South Uist War Memorial for both wars and I am not aware of any memorial on the Isle of Eriskay. There may well be a memorial in the church where the pulpit is made from the bow of a Royal Navy lifeboat that was washed up (From HMS Hermes the aircraft carrier I believe which lost the boat in a fierce storm during a NATO exercise in the 'sixties).

Thanks Malcolm. I have now updated the list.

I have also updated the Ross and Cromarty list, we only need Nigg now for that part of the Highlands.

Yes, sorry GW, I couldn't see it earlier! Ross & Cromarty now complete.

I have also updated North Ayrshire too. Thanks Kevin.

Ord was added in August.

I do not believe there is a civic memorial at Westhill. Westhill is in the Parish of Skene and I would expect any casualties will be on the memorials at Skene kirk / kirkyard. At the the time Westhill, as it is today, did not exist. It, Elrick and Mason's Lodge were small hamlets. There may have been something in the Congregational kirk at Westhill detailing casualties of that faith.
If you can advise the source of the Westhill info I can check further.
