The inscriptions on the cross have almost weathered away. This picture replicates the names of the fallen exactly. It was taken from the local church at some point and placed next to the memorial.

BLAIRGOWRIE ADVERTISER: 25.11.16
Another of the gallant men on Ardler Roll of Honour has made the great sacrifice - Pvt. F.G. Robertson 7th Black Watch, son of Mr John Robertson, presently residing at Drumkilbo Cottages, Meigle.
Pvt. Robertson, of whom nothing has been heard since the end of July, is reported to have been very severely wounded during the evacuation of a sap by our men, and although receiving first aid on the field, it is officially reported of him that he did not pass through the doctor's hands, and is deemed to have died on the way to the hospital.
He had been at the Front for quite a long time, was an extremely fine lad, and greatly loved by his officers and mates.
On Sunday in Ardler Parish Church Rev A. Stuart made special reference to the above sad news, and at the close of the service the whole congregation stood as the Dead March was played.

THE ALYTH GUARDIAN: 26.04.1918
Cpl. Robert Shepherd, Gordon Highlanders (son of Mr and Mrs Shepherd, Ardler Station) has been killed.
At the time of enlisting in 1916, he was on the collecting staff of the Brittanic Insurance Society.
Mr and Mrs Shepherd have now lost their three sons in the War. Pte. William Shepherd, the youngest son, having been killed at Loos in September 1915; Pte. George Shepherd, Scots Guards, was killed on 31st July last. Mr and Mrs Shepherd have the sympathy of the community in their three-fold loss.

* Ardler is just a tiny hamlet. To have lost so many of her sons to the war was cruel enough - how Mr & Mrs Shepherd must have felt to lose them all....
