Hugh,
The Stirling Observer, or some such local paper, may hold a more extensive obituary but here is a piece from the Strathearn Herald;
THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 18.05.1918
WELL-KNOWN DUNBLANE MAN DIES OF WOUNDS
Major Robert Main Christie, Labour Company, who died on 15th inst. of gas poisoning and wounds, had been on active service since the outbreak of war. He commanded one of the Volunteer Companies of the Black Watch during the South African War. Major Christie was an old Queen's Park football player and internationalist, and well-known curier. He was an architect and civil engineer by profession, and his wife and family reside at Westlands, Dunblane.

I am pretty sure quite a bit of information could be found on Robert M. Christie. I did a quick google and noted that he played , and scored, for Queens Park in their 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers in the 1884 F.A. Cup Final. |

From the website of Lodge of Dunblane No. IX
In the early part of the twentieth century the Lodge continued to prosper and expand, until 1914 when the Great War began to affect membership. In that year a letter of apology was received from six Brethren, including the Junior Warden, for not attending meetings as they had been called to join the 1st Scottish Horse at Birnam, in consequence of the war with Germany. At this time it was mentioned in the Lodge that no fewer than twelve Brethren of the Lodge had been called from their homes and were now engaged in the defence of their country. A roll of honour was then prepared by the Lodge showing the 12 serving Brethren; by 1915 the roll was extended to 27 and, in the final count in 1918, no fewer than 83 members of the Lodge had served in the various branches of the services. One Brother, Major R.M. Christie, whose father was Master of the Lodge in 1892-93, was killed on active service during the last months of hostilities, and the Brethren saw fit to erect a memorial plaque on the wall of the Lodge to his memory. |

The area around the memorial looks very different in this old hand coloured postcard, the area on which it sits doesn't seem as raised from the pic i've seen.

What a great picture postcard of the memorial in a fine setting. The monument must surely have been relocated at some time. |
