Thomas Adamson – age 22 – Private (20017) 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
In 1901 the Adamson family had moved from Lockerbie in Dumfriesshire and were living at 14 Main Street in Kilsyth where Thomas (senior) was a Letter Press Printer Compositor. By 1914 Thomas (junior) had become a compositor with J. M. Duncan Ltd. Printers in Kilsyth and played in the Kilsyth Victoria Band. He enlisted in Edinburgh in November 1914 and landed with his battalion at Boulogne in January 1916. Thomas died of wounds received on the Somme in the 13th General Hospital in Boulogne. Born 1894 in Lockerbie, Dryfesdale, Dumfriesshire. Son of Thomas and Mary Adamson of Viewfield, Bathgate, West Lothian.
Died of Wounds on 12 July 1916 and buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial, on the Bathgate War Memorial and on the Kilsyth Town and Victoria Bands Memorial on the bandstand in Burngreen Peace Gardens in Kilsyth.

Named on the Galashiels War Memorial in Selkirkshire as:

PTE. JAMES STALKER. Royal Scots
James Stalker – age 39 – Private (31064) 11th Battalion, Royal Scots.
By 1901 the family had moved from 35 Wood Street in Galashiels to Bathgate in West Lothian and James was employed as a steel sheet worker. He enlisted in 1916 and had been on active service for two years when he was killed. James was buried in Slypskappelle Churchyard, Moorslede but was re-interred in June 1930.
Born 1879 in Galashiels. Son of the late David Stalker (died 1917) and Margaret (Martin) Stalker (died 1910) of Bathgate.
Brother of David Stalker of Ashton Place, Bridgend, Bathgate. (Source: West Lothian Courier 1/11/1918 p.3)
Killed in Action on 3 October 1918 and buried in Sanctuary Wood Cemetery, Belgium.

Named on the Coldingham Parish War Memorial in Berwickshire as:

NEWTON, THOMAS 4th R.S.
Thomas Newton – age 27 – Private (19324) 1/4th Battalion (Queen's Edinburgh Rifles) Royal Scots.
Thomas was a miner at the Hopetoun Colliery in Bathgate, West Lothian when he enlisted in the Royal Scots in December 1914. He landed with the 16th Battalion (2nd Edinburgh) at Le Havre in January 1916 and fought at the Battle of the Somme but in early 1917 he became ill and no longer fit for active service. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in August 1917 and was returned to the Hopetoun Colliery. Thomas was recalled from the Reserves in April 1918 and posted to the 1/4th RS in France in June but he was killed three months later.
Born 1891 in Edinburgh. Son of Robert John and Margaret (Forbes) Newton of 61 Easton Rows, Bathgate. Husband of Agnes (Thorburn) Newton of Christison's Brae, Coldingham and of Cairncross, Reston who he married on 31 December 1917 in Coldingham.
Missing in Action on 21 September 1918 and named on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.

ALEXANDER R. THOMSON
Alexander Raeburn Greig Thomson – age 26 – Corporal (3060087) 8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Alexander was a tailors' cutter in Edinburgh when he enlisted in January 1940. In June 1944 he landed in Normandy as part of Operation Overlord and fought in the Battle for Caen.
Born 1917 in Bathgate, West Lothian. Son of William and Elizabeth Jane (Greig) Thomson of 21 Engine Place, Bathgate. Husband of Joan Fairbairn (Bolton) Thomson of Cockburnspath who he married in 1941 in Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 16 July 1944 and buried in Banneville-La-Campagne War Cemetery, France.

Named on the Haddington War Memorial in East Lothian (together with three of his brothers) as:

John Buchan Cranston â€“ age 34 â€“ Company Sergeant Major (5651) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was an asylum attendant at Bangour Village Hospital, Uphall, Linlithgowshire when he married in February 1913. As a reservist he was recalled in August 1914 and as a Lance Corporal he joined the 1st Camerons in France in September. He was wounded and evacuated home in October. After he had recovered he was posted to the 7th Battalion and was Mentioned in Despatches for gallant and distinguished work in early 1916. John was also recommended for a Distinguished Conduct Medal but this was not officially awarded.

Born 1882 in Leith, Edinburgh. Son of the late Alexander Cranston (died 1911) and of Elizabeth (Smith) Cranston of St. Martin's Gate, Haddington.
Husband of Agnes Robertson (Thomson) Cranston of Sunnybank Cottage, Bridgend, Bathgate who he married in 1913 in Bathgate.
Killed in Action on 16 July 1916 and buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
