This memorial has had a name added to it soon after these pictures were taken in 2009. William James Birse. He is listed in the Howe of Cromar RoH

Interesting item on Scotlands People.

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Content/Help/index.aspx?r=2235

At present I am not quite sure how / why Birse has been added at Leochel Cushnie. His well documented connection, when in the army, is to the Parish of Coull. He was born there, lived there and he is already on the war memorial there.

That is very interesting Jim. There is no mention of the Coull memorial in the article which suggests there is a good reason he wasn't added to the Leochel Cushnie memorial after the First World War and probably shouldn't have been added in 2010.

The Coull Memorial is a window in the parish kirk, but it is their War Memorial none the less. I have not seen the memorial but a press item of the day gives the same name, William James Birse upon it, but Gordon Highlanders. I suspect it can only be the same man with the unit wrong as there is no reference to a man of that name being in the Gordons. ( Edit - I am now aware it is not Gordon, but Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. The press item is incorrect. )

There is plenty references to Woodfield, Coull in the various articles / records I have seen - so why is he added at Leochel Cushnie? I am making discreet inquiries.

The article on the Your Scotland website mentioned above shows a photograph of Birse in the uniform of the Gordon Highlanders so he must have served in the regiment at some point.

I did notice that. The photo is posed and may not be his own uniform. I had wondered if he was in the Gordons T.F.. He looks quite young.

He attested on 30th May 1916 aged 18 years 224 days, a steam motor driver and is shown as going to the Army Reserve next day. Could he have been issued a GH uniform at this point?
He was mobilised on 18th December 1916 and joined the 42nd Training Reserve Battalion ( TR/1/16994 ) the day after.
He transferred to the 2nd Argyll & SH on 10th May 1917, went to France next day and was posted to the 1st / 8th A & SH on the 27th at Etaples.
The Gordon Highlanders are not mentioned at all and he states he had no previous military service.

The 42nd Training Reserve Battalion had been the 11th (Reserve) Battalion, Gordon Highlanders until September 1916 and so that would explain his uniform.

As a TR battalion in Scottish Command 9th TR Brigade, it would have trained recruits for any of the Highland regiments hence Birse's move to the Argylls once trained. For more detail see here:

Adam
This further confirms that he is certainly the man on the Coull memorial.
Being the local regiment it is easily understood why he is noted as Gordons.
Remember I have not viewed the Coull memorial, only the press report of those listed. I don't doubt it repeats the memorial detail.

If correct, I am quite surprised RBLS got themselves involved in this. You would think they would learn to verify the details are correct.

It suggests that whatever checks were made locally to find Birse's name on a war memorial were not very thorough. I don't know the area but on the map it doesn't look too far between the two locations.

Adam

Seven miles or so from Coull to Leochel-Cushnie, and I am fairly sure were neighbouring parishes.

Parish of Coull War Memorial

Here is the oak tablet with the commemoration details including William James Birse. I appreciate it is not very clear but on the panel he is listed correctly as Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and not Gordon Highlanders. The press item of the day is clearly wrong.

The Memorial is a round stained glass window depicting the Crucifixion.
