Leslie - Kirkcaldy District
UKNIWM Ref No. 8533
The Leslie war memorial is a tall cenotaph constructed or rustic freestone blocks with tapering pedestal and standing on two steps. The commemorations and names of the WWI dead are carved on dressed sandstone panels set into the faces of the pedestal. The names of the WWII dead have been carved on the lower part of two faces of the pedestal, below the WWI panels.
At the top of the cenotaph on the four sides are carved:
A cross with heart and the inscription 'SACRIFICE'
A reversed sword with wreath and the inscription 'VALOUR'
A rampant griffin with wreath and the inscription 'DVTY'
A saltire in wreath and the inscription 'ENVRANCE'
The monument stands in gardens at the junction of Greenside Street and High Street.
The photographs were taken in the 1990's and the sandstone tablets were becoming weathered in places so there may be some inaccuracies in the following transcriptions until they can be checked into. I've included a few question marks were I was unsure.

As you can see the the problem, highlighted by Jim, regarding the weathering of names has been remedied. Marble(?) panels with the names thereon have been cut into the monument. I think it has been done very neatly and the choice of colour compliments the structure. |

Great photos Mark and yes the refurbishment looks excellent. There was a spell in the 70's and 80's when panels were being replaced by those thin laminate panels, usually brown with a white border, which are durable but otherwise look terrible. Its great to see the work done properly.
By the way what is HCyB? Highland Cycling Battalion? |

Highland Cyclist Battalion. You'll fnd it mostly on Fife and Angus memorials where it was raised. There were three battalions raised for home defence in 1914. It was later incorporated into the Black Watch.

The Edward E Delargie listed was this man:
Name: DELARGY, EDWARD
Initials: E
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots
Unit Text: 1st/8th Bn.
Age: 19
Date of Death: 06/09/1917
Service No: 335727
Additional information: Son of Mrs. Winnifred Delargy, of 42, Mount Pleasant, Leslie, Fife.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: IX. H. 19.
Cemetery: VLAMERTINGHE NEW MILITARY CEMETERY
He was one of a small number of Scots who were shot at dawn for Desertion. He was pardoned along with the rest in 2006. It is good to see that he has always been included on his local war memorial. |

I see the first two WW1 casualties are listed out of sequence unlike every other name. I wonder if this is because of rank alone or their being brothers?
