Thanks so much for this Jamie. I've been ambling around the Cupar area in search of the right memorial as my gt-gt uncle was Pte Alexander Donaldson, Black Watch, as listed on this memorial. I had tried Springfield, hence my own post, but this has saved me loads of time. Many thanks once again, I'll be able to nip up there myself soon.

kind regards
Clark

Hi again all,

Dragged the wife and kids up to Monimail to see for myself my gt-gt-uncle Pt Alexander Donaldson's name. They were bored, so I gave them the blood and gore stuff about going over the top (etc) that tends to enliven such childish behaviour.

The kids liked the story too....

Here are the shots I took and hope they add to Jim's earlier posting :

regards,
Clark

Well, I don't yet have any photos of Alexander Donaldson but I'm trawling through family sources too see if I can get some.

He was a ploughman on the Hilton of Carslogie farm, nbear Bow of Fife (about 5miles from Cupar). I searched through old newspapers at Cupar librbary and found that he joined up in January 1915. He would thus be a volunteer as married men were not yet 'deemed to be enlisted' by default. His medal record index card shows that he arrived in France in June. He was injured on the 28th October and died of his wounds at the hospital in the hospital sometime between the 30th and the 2nd Nov, depending on different reports/sources.

regards
Clark

I noticed the unusual name 'Cottrell Dormer' and couldn't help but look them up on CWGC. They don't appear to have much of a connection with Fife!

Name: COTTRELL-DORMER, CLEMENT
Initials: C
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lieutenant
Regiment/Service: Scots Guards
Unit Text: 2nd Bn.
Age: 23
Date of Death: 26/10/1914
Additional information: Son of Captain Charles and Mrs Ursula Cottrell-Dormer, of Rousham, Steeple Aston, Oxon. Educated at Eton. Joined 1911. His brother Charles Melville Cottrell-Dormer also fell.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 11.
Memorial: YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

Name: COTTRELL-DORMER, CHARLES MELVILLE
Initials: C M
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Lieutenant
Regiment/Service: Coldstream Guards
Unit Text: No. 3 Coy. 3rd Bn.
Age: 22
Date of Death: 08/02/1915
Awards: D S O
Additional information: Son of Capt. Charles and Mrs. Ursula Cottrell-Dormer, of Rousham, Steeple Aston, Oxford. His brother Clement also fell.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: II. B. 7.
Cemetery: BETHUNE TOWN CEMETERY

Any ideas why they are commemorated at Monimail?

Roxy

I did a bit of 'googling' but all I could find out was that the 2 Cottrell-Dormers had a brother who was imprisoned by the Germans during the Great War and their uncle (Maximillian) was married at St Andrew's Episcopal Church (to Helen Allen - no offspring noted). The family come from Rousham in Oxon - a Cottrell-Dormer still resides there and is a local councillor.

Hi all,

Thanks to Max (see earlier posts) who alerted me to their availability, the medals of Pte Alexander Donaldson, Black Watch, are coming home to his family. I made the purchase last night and expect to receive them in the next day or so. I'll forgive myself for being a bit emotional about it all, and those of you on this forum will no doubt understand in any case.

kind regards
Clark

Clark,

That's great news. I know how proud I am to have my fathers WW2 medals, so I understand how this can feel.

Regards,

David

There is only one "Batman" listed on CWGC and he is William, a Corporal in the Essex Regt. There is also a one "Battman".

Private Robert Batman on this memorial is likely one of the following two Robert Bateman's listed on CWGC.

S/6808 2nd Btn Gordons (born Dundee)
43079 6th/7th R.S.F. (born Linlithgow)

Cheers,
Derek.
