Buckhaven Pilot Killed
Sgt.-Pilot David Simpson Allan, son of Mr and Mrs David Allan, 32 Sandwell Street, Buckhaven, has been killed in a flying accident.
He returned to this country less than a year ago after completing his training at an R.A.F. school in Canada, where he gained his "wings."
Sgt.-Pilot Allan, who was 24, was employed at Michael Colliery, East Wemyss, previous to joining the R.A.F. nearly four years ago.

METHIL BLACK WATCH SERGEANT KILLED
Mr and Mrs Watson, Den Walk, Methil, have received official word that their son, Sergeant William Watson, Black Watch, has been killed in action in Sicily.

Prior to enlistment he was a despatch clerk at Durie Foundry, Leven.

He was well known in ambulance circles in Methil and Leven.

GUARDSMAN KILLED
Mr and Mrs Alexander Beveridge, who reside at 29 Morar Street, Methil, have been officially informed that their eldest son, Guardsman Alex. Beveridge, Scots Guards, has been killed in action in Italy.

Guardsman Beveridge, who was 24 years of age, was previously employed at the National Steel Foundry, Kirkland.

KILLED IN ACTION
Pte George Mortimer, 203 Methilhaven Road, Methil, has been reported killed in action in Normandy.

Pte. Mortimer, who was 24, was employed as a moulder at the National Steel Foundry, Kirkland, prior to joining the Army at the outbreak of war. He came through Dunkirk and was later at EI Alamein and Sicily.

He leaves a widow and baby daughter.

Black Watch Association official in call to flog 'beasts' who vandalised Methil war memorial

Vandals who destroyed part of a Fife war memorial have been described as disrespectful beasts.

The act comes days before veterans gather at the memorial to remember the area's war dead.

Police are investigating the ''despicable'' incident which happened just a fortnight before the community will gather there to mark Armistice Day.

Fife Council hopes to have most of the damage repaired before veterans arrive to pay their respects to the area's war dead on November 11.

However, one Black Watch veteran told The Courier that those responsible should be taken out and flogged.

Rob Scott, chairman of the Fife branch of The Black Watch Association, said the memorial in Wellesley Road was restored and rededicated just last year and that he was horrified to learn of the destruction.

''These people are worse than animals,'' he said. ''It's like desecrating a grave.

''I don't know what goes through these people's heads. It's so disrespectful.

''They've no respect for themselves, far less equipment or memorials. They haven't got a clue.''

Mr Scott, who will lay a wreath on behalf of The Black Watch on November 11, said the lights were very much part of the memorial.

''They shouldn't desecrate anything on that ground but these beasts have come along and destroyed all of this.''

Local councillor Jim Young discovered the vandalism on Monday morning and reported it to police.

He said: ''The lights are totally destroyed and will need to be replaced rather than repaired.

''It's very disrespectful to do anything like that in the war memorial area, especially with Remembrance Sunday being less than two weeks away.''

He added: ''Electricians are isolating them so nothing can happen to people in that respect.''

Reg Briers of the War Memorials Trust said the organisation was working to ensure children were educated on the significance of memorials.

''We spend a lot of time trying to make sure our memorials are kept up to date and cleaned and repaired,'' he said.

''In Newburgh we are encouraging children to work on our war memorial and have been for several years.

''The children now respect the war memorial.''

Adding that the vandalism in Methil was devastating, Mr Briers said the British Legion was about to launch a schools competition in the run-up to the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.

''Schools can go to their local war memorial and learn more about it,'' he said.

''Memorials are hugely significant and young people need to learn about respect.''

Dave Paterson, Fife Council's area services manager for Levenmouth, was with Mr Young when the damage was discovered.

He told The Courier: ''We should be able to repair the lights in time for Armistice Day but we don't know the full extent of the electrical damage.''

A spokesman for Fife Constabulary confirmed that seven lanterns were damaged between 6pm on Friday and 10am on Monday.

Adding that the force was investigating, he said: ''Given the time of the year and the fact it is a very important monument to the country and the town, we are seeking any information from anybody who has seen or heard anything.''

"Private John Brown (19), of the 1/7th Black Watch, a native of Methil, is reported by Captain Wallace to have fallen on the 17th inst. Private Brown showed special aptitude as a bomb-thrower, and was engaged in this duty when shot by a piece of shrapnel. His body was found by his brother-in-law, David Robertson, who crawled over some exposed ground in search of him. He was a son of Mr George Brown, and, like his father, worked at Methil docks.
John McGregor, of the same corps, reported killed a fortnight before, was a relative.
Private Webster, Wellesley Road, Methil, a neighbour of John McGregor, was also killed on Thursday."
