Lord provost condemns 'mindless vanalism' of city war memorial

Dundee's Lord provost has condemned the 'mindless vanalism' of the city's war memorial.

The memorial on the Law in Dundee was thought to have been sprayed sprayed with blue graffiti on Monday or Tuesday.

Complaints were made to Dundee City Council and the response team removed the graffiti on Wednesday.

Lord provost Bob Duncan said: "I am sure that everyone in Dundee will join with me in condemning this mindless vandalism. The memorial is a tribute to those from Dundee who have made the ultimate sacrifice and I am appalled by what has happened.

"I would appeal for anyone with information to contact Tayside Police."

A spokesman for Dundee City Council said: "We received a complaint about vandalism to the war memorial on the Law in Dundee and responded."

Tayside Police said no complaints has been received about the incident.

I contacted STV about the spelling mistakes and they have corrected vanalism to vandalism.

DUNDEE SOLDIER KILLED BY MINE EXPLOSION.
Pte. Patrick Carroll, of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, after a long spell of active service, has met his death as the result of the exploding of a mine.
Pte. Carroll, whose home is at 10 Hean's Lane, Dundee, belonged to a soldiering family, and the father and two of deceased's brothers are still serving. The father is in the Labour Section of the Royal Engineers, one of the brothers is in the Black Watch, and the other is in the Army Service Corps. Deceased, who was nineteen years of age, was wounded last year, but had returned to the front.
A letter has been received from deceased's platoon officer, who says he cannot speak too highly of Pte. Carroll's conduct all the time he had been in his platoon. He was ever ready to do his duty, and was always cheerful.

A DUNDEE HERO FALLS.
MENTIONED SEVERAL TIMES IN DESPATCHES.
Corporal W. Keen, Black Watch, who was several times mentioned in despatches for heroism on the battlefield, has made the supreme sacrifice.

Corporal Keen, who is a son of Mr James Keen, 41 Cowgate, Dundee, resided at 68 Ann Street. He was a bomber for some time, and was promoted on the field to the rank of corporal. In a sympathetic letter to Mrs Keen, Major S. M. Milligan, of the Black Watch, states that he was greatly impressed by Corporal Keen's kindly nature and his brave actions.

He was greatly loved by all his comrades, and was a favourite with all.

The deceased soldier leaves a widow and four young children.

STORMED TRENCHES AND DROVE OUT GERMANS. "MAGNIFICENT CONDUCT DESERVES PRAISE."
In connection with the death of Private John Brady, Royal Scots, eldest son of Mr Thomas Brady, 75 Brook Street, Dundee, an officer wrote to his parents:— "How magnificently he and so many others stormed the trenches and drove out the Germans deserves the highest praise. You will be pleased to know that your son died doing his duty to the last. His loss will be keenly felt, as he was a great favourite in the company."

Private Brady, who was 21 years of age, was shot by a sniper when between the first and second German lines. He joined the forces in the early months of last year, and had been at the front since August.

A brother, Private James Brady, who is 18 years of age, is in the Cyclist Battalion.
