A mail I got from Bill Heron (who I met in B&Q in Ayr) concerning 2 names on this memorial (one his namesake).

Name: HERON, WILLIAM JAMES
Initials: W J
Nationality: United Kingdom

William James although single had a daughter Jamesina Heron born 5th July 1901 but died on 17th April 1902, he was my Grandmother's 2nd cousin.

the second person I have detail of is James Black who also appears on the Portwilliam memorial. He was born on 10th February 1889 at Portwilliam to Alexander Black and Jane Heron. He was a Coachman to Sir Herbert Maxwell of Monreith before enlisting at Kingston on Thames. James was a single person and my Grandfather's step brother.

From The Scotsman, Monday 6th September 1920

"Celtic Cross Unveiled at Port-William. The war memorial to men from Mochrum parish was unveiled at Port-William on Saturday afternoon by the Right Hon Sir H. E. Maxwell Bart. Lord Lieutenant of Wigtownshire. It is in the form of a Celtic cross and on a bronze tablet on the front are inscribed the names of the fifty-two men who were killed."

Note that the James Black listed was coachman to the man who unveiled the memorial.

His father unveiled the Port William War Memorial. His CWGC entry lists three units. Royal Marines, Grenadier Guards and Lovat Scouts.

I'm not sure about Peter M. Barr on this memorial, it's not clear to me what service he belongs. Is it the R.N.R. or is he a Gunner? There are few Peter Barr's on CWGC or SNWM but I can't figure him out.
Lt. G. Outram is a bit of a mystery too, he should be easily identifiable, but he isn't!?

The last WW2 casualty Robert Shorrock isn't on CWGC, he died at home in December 1942 in Port William of T.B. and pneumonia. On his D.C. he is described as a "Sea Farer" aged 51. The memorial lists him as R.N.R.

The WW1 and WW2 Milhench casualtes are likely related. The name is so rare, there's four others of the same surname. Similarly the two Kevan's of each war listed, just 8 others of the surname on CWGC.

Cheers,
Derek.

re Peter Barr - the RNR did indeed have gunners in WW1 so I think it quite likely that he was Gnr AND RNR. I have come across them a few times, if memory serves they served on Royal Navy trawler fleet and possibly on guns fitted to Merchant Vessels. Perhaps he was actually Merchant Navy and died of illness which would account for him not being listed in CWGC?
