"Intimation has been received that Private William Goudie, 2nd Royal Scots Fusiliers, was killed on January 28. Captain Crawford, who wrote intimation the death, states that while Private Goudie was assisting at the digging of a redoubt to the rear of the trenches a portion of a shrapnel shell caught him in the back of the head, and that death was practically instantaneous. Private Goudie was about 25 years of age, and was a reservist in the 2nd R.S.F. He is the first soldier from Prestwick reported killed. For four years he acted as one of the gardeners at the Biggart Memorial Home, Prestwick."

"News has been received by his friends of the death of Private Charles S. Dickson, Glasgow Highlanders, Private Dickson, who resided at Oakley, Prestwick, was employed with messrs Church & Co. Stockbrokers, West George Street, Glasgow. He joined the Glasgow Highlanders at the outbreak of the war, and was one of the 150 selected to complete the battalion sent to the front. Private Dickson, who was about 21 years of age, was, it is understood, killed by shrapnel. His father, who died some time ago, was formerly proprietor of the George Hotel, Kilmarnock."
