MR MOON OF BALHOLMIE'S YOUNGER SON KILLED -
MEMORIAL SERVICE AT CARGILL

Second Lieutenant Basil Moon, who was killed in action on 24th inst., was the younger son of Mr Ernest Moon, K.C., of Balholmie, Cargill, Counsel to the Speaker of the House of Commons, and Mrs Moon. He was educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford. When war was declared he applied for a commission; and was gazetted to the Post Office Rifles. His regiment went to France in March.
On Sunday a memorial service was conducted in Cargill Parish Church by Rev. W. A. Campbell. Preaching on John xiv., 1 "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me", Mr Campbell said:- "Our trouble today is the loss of one who worshipped here regularly, preferring the service of the Church of Scotland to that of the Church of England. Enlisting on the outbreak of war, he was on Monday last struck in battle, while leading his men in a most difficult and dangerous charge. He did not live for himself; and the end of his life was action, and successful action, for the sake of others. For the sake of others he voluntarily sacrificed himself. Without such self-sacrifice war would be but carnage. With it, war, in spite of its terrible features, displays a solemn morality. The brave young officer, having fought well, will sleep well, even though the storm of war should rage over his grave. When one who encounters death for the sake of others is called away, it may be like the stoic to remain unmoved; but it is not like the Christian. God intends that his Gift should be received with smiles of gratitude and surrendered with tears of grief. Our sorrow must flow in the channels of submission. It must be a sorrow so quiet as to hear the words of consolation that are uttererd amongst the stokes of the rod - 'Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me".
'The Dead march in Saul' was played at the close of service.

My attention was drawn to the surname of Isles which appears here.
There are only a dozen men to this surname commemorated on the CWGC who fell in the Great War so it is a very unique..

Name: ISLES
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Serjeant
Regiment/Service: Border Regiment
Unit Text: 11th Bn.
Age: 25
Date of Death: 18/11/1916
Service No: 13654
Additional information: Son of Mr. and Mrs. David Isles, of Scott St., Burrelton, Perthshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: X. J. 10.
Cemetery: LONSDALE CEMETERY, AUTHUILE

What is really interesting with the above is that the 11th Bn. Border Regiment advanced over the ground that the Lonsdale cemetery now stands on on the infamous July 1st 1916 - indeed the cemetery is named after them.
Very few who advanced that day lived to tell the tale.
I wonder if Joe survived the 1st July only to be killed right at the end of the Battle of the Somme?
And I wonder how a boy from Pertshire ended up in a Cumbrian "Pals" Battalion?

Burrelton
Sergt. Joseph M. Isles, Border Regiment, son of Mr David Isles, North Street, and who was reported missing in November last year, is now reported killed. Before enlisting he was employed at Carlisle.

With regard to Joseph Isles he has 3 mentions in the Cumberland News (the local Carlisle newspaper)
20 Jan 1917 page 8c when he was first missing
3 Feb 1917 page 9 c & d (so must be a long article)
22 Dec 1917 page 1a when he is finally presumed Killed, previously Missing, when we find that he lived at Grasmere Street, Carlisle

I am taking these from our local index to the newspaper, as I am not in Carlisle Library where the newspapers are in the near future
